CHAPTER 11: THE WOMAN BESIDE ALEXANDER

Arthur couldn't breathe.

The control room around him vanished.

The only thing that existed was the monitor.

Claire.

Standing beside Alexander.

Alive.

She wore a simple gray dress.

Her hair was shorter than Arthur remembered.

A thin white scar crossed her left temple.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakably Claire.

The woman he had buried.

The woman he had mourned for ten years.

Marcus whispered,

"...Impossible."

Victoria took one step backward.

Then another.

Tears streamed down her face.

"No..."

Arthur reached toward the screen as if he could touch it.

"Claire..."

The woman looked directly into the camera.

For a split second, her eyes softened.

Then she spoke.

"Arthur..."

Her voice.

Exactly the same.

Every doubt shattered.

Arthur's knees nearly gave way.

He had spent a decade blaming himself.

A decade believing he had failed to protect her.

And now...

She was alive.

No one moved.

Alexander leaned back in his chair as though hosting a business meeting.

"I've waited a long time for this reunion."

Arthur's voice trembled with barely restrained anger.

"You let me believe she was dead."

Alexander's expression never changed.

"I let you become strong."

Arthur slammed his fist against the desk beneath the monitors.

"You destroyed my family!"

"No."

Alexander answered calmly.

"I preserved it."

Marcus looked between the two men.

Nothing about this conversation sounded sane.

Alexander continued.

"If Claire had remained with you..."

"...she would have been murdered within weeks."

Arthur froze.

"What?"

Alexander folded his hands.

"You still think I was your enemy."

"I wasn't."

Claire finally spoke again.

"Arthur..."

"I'm sorry."

Arthur's eyes filled with emotion.

"You left Emily."

Claire closed her eyes.

"I know."

"Do you know how many nights she cried for you?"

Claire couldn't answer.

Alexander did.

"If Emily had stayed with Claire..."

"...she would have died."

Arthur looked at him in disbelief.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

"I expect you to verify it."

Alexander pressed a button on his desk.

One of the screens changed.

An old surveillance recording appeared.

Timestamp:

Ten Years Ago.

Arthur's mansion.

Claire carried three-year-old Emily down the staircase.

She looked frightened.

She kept checking over her shoulder.

Then...

The front door exploded inward.

Three masked men rushed inside.

Gunfire erupted.

Claire grabbed Emily and ran toward the kitchen.

The footage ended.

Marcus stared.

"This was never in the police file."

Alexander nodded.

"Because the police never received it."

Arthur couldn't tear his eyes away from the frozen image.

He remembered that day differently.

He had been told Claire died in a car accident after leaving the house.

No one had mentioned armed intruders.

No one.

Marcus immediately examined the metadata.

"The recording is authentic."

"No signs of editing."

Arthur slowly looked at Alexander.

"Who attacked my house?"

Alexander answered without hesitation.

"The people who believed I was becoming a liability."

"The Foundation."

Marcus frowned.

"You said you belonged to them."

"I did."

"And then?"

"I tried to leave."

Silence.

Alexander smiled bitterly.

"No one leaves."

Arthur looked at Claire.

"Why didn't you come back?"

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"I tried."

Alexander lowered his gaze.

"I stopped her."

Arthur exploded.

"You WHAT?"

Alexander didn't flinch.

"You were being watched."

"So was Emily."

"If Claire returned..."

"...all three of you would have been killed."

Arthur's fists trembled.

"That wasn't your choice to make."

"No."

Alexander admitted quietly.

"It wasn't."

For the first time since appearing on the screen...

The old man looked genuinely remorseful.

Suddenly...

Every monitor flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then static swallowed the image.

Marcus frowned.

"Someone's overriding the feed."

The picture returned.

But Alexander and Claire were gone.

Instead...

A man wearing a black mask appeared.

His voice was electronically distorted.

"So..."

"...the family finally reunited."

Alexander's calm expression had vanished from the room.

Even the masked man sounded amused.

"You've all been listening to the wrong storyteller."

Arthur stepped toward the camera.

"Who are you?"

The masked figure laughed.

"You've been asking that question for ten years."

He slowly removed one glove.

On his wrist...

A tattoo.

A black raven with outstretched wings.

Victoria gasped.

"No..."

Marcus looked at her.

"You know that symbol?"

She nodded weakly.

"I've only seen it once."

"Where?"

"On the man who ordered Claire's execution."

The masked figure clapped slowly.

"Very good, Victoria."

"You finally remembered."

Arthur's voice hardened.

"You tried to kill my wife."

The man tilted his head.

"No."

"I succeeded."

Arthur pointed at the empty screen where Claire had stood moments earlier.

"She's alive."

The masked man chuckled.

"Is she?"

Without warning, another video replaced the live feed.

Claire.

Alone.

In a white hospital room.

A digital timestamp appeared in the corner.

Recorded: Nine Years, Eleven Months Ago.

Marcus stared.

"That's not live..."

The masked man spread his arms.

"Exactly."

Arthur's heartbeat stopped.

The woman he had just spoken to...

Might never have been speaking to him in real time.

The masked man leaned toward the camera.

"You still don't understand."

"The greatest weapon isn't a gun."

"It's timing."

He smiled beneath the mask.

"By the way..."

"You have exactly fifteen minutes."

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"Fifteen minutes until what?"

The masked man answered softly.

"Until the real explosion begins."

The screen went black.

At that exact moment, alarms blared throughout the underground complex.
