CHAPTER 1: THE LIE IN THE BATHTUB

The scream echoed through the marble halls long before anyone understood what it meant.
It wasn't the playful shriek of a spoiled child.
It wasn't laughter.
It was terror.
Six-year-old Emily Carter clawed desperately at the porcelain edge of the bathtub, her tiny fingers slipping across the wet surface. Water flooded her nose and mouth as her lungs burned.
Above her stood Victoria Carter.
Elegant.
Beautiful.
Immaculately dressed in navy silk pajamas that looked more appropriate for a luxury magazine than a family home.
Her face remained strangely calm.
Cold.
Detached.
As though she were watching rain fall against a window instead of forcing a child underwater.
Emily kicked wildly.
The little girl's legs struck the side of the tub with dull thuds.
Tiny bubbles escaped from her lips.
Her vision blurred.
Victoria leaned closer.
"You've caused enough trouble," she whispered.
"No one will believe you after tonight."
Emily couldn't answer.
She couldn't even breathe.
Another second.
Then another.
The room became quieter.
Too quiet.
Victoria noticed it.
Children stopped fighting when they began running out of oxygen.
She tightened her grip.
Almost over.
Almost—
"LET HER GO!"
The bathroom door exploded open.
Margaret.
The family's nanny for nearly eight years.
She didn't hesitate.
She didn't scream.
She acted.
Grabbing a fistful of Victoria's blonde hair, Margaret yanked backward with every ounce of strength she had.
Victoria cried out in pain.
Her grip released instantly.
Emily burst upward, coughing violently as water poured from her mouth.
She gasped.
Coughed.
Cried.
Margaret pulled the little girl into her arms while Victoria crashed hard against the soaked marble floor.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The only sound was Emily struggling to breathe.
Victoria slowly pushed herself up.
Her perfect hairstyle had been ruined.
Mascara streaked beneath one eye.
Anger flashed across her face.
"Have you lost your mind?" she shouted.
Margaret positioned herself between Victoria and Emily.
"I should ask you the same question."
Victoria's expression changed immediately.
The rage disappeared.
Replaced by panic.
Footsteps.
Heavy.
Fast.
Someone was running.
Only one person in the mansion walked with that unmistakable rhythm.
Arthur Carter.
The owner of Carter Global Holdings.
One of the wealthiest men in the country.
The father Emily adored.
The husband Victoria feared.
He entered the bathroom so quickly that water splashed beneath his polished leather shoes.
His eyes scanned the room.
The overturned shampoo bottles.
The flooded floor.
Margaret holding Emily.
Emily coughing uncontrollably.
Victoria kneeling beside the bathtub.
Everything froze.
Arthur crossed the room without saying a word.
He ignored Victoria completely.
Ignored her reaching hand.
Ignored the tears already forming in her eyes.
He dropped to his knees before Emily.
His expensive suit soaked instantly as he wrapped his daughter inside his arms.
Emily buried her face against his chest.
"Daddy..."
The tiny voice barely existed.
Arthur gently brushed wet strands of hair away from her face.
His hands trembled.
Not from fear.
From fury.
"You're safe now," he whispered.
"I've got you."
Emily clung to him as though letting go meant drowning again.
Behind them, Victoria forced herself to cry.
"It was an accident!"
Arthur remained silent.
"Arthur..."
"She slipped."
"I tried to save her."
"You know I'd never hurt Emily."
Every sentence sounded rehearsed.
Margaret stared in disbelief.
How could someone lie so effortlessly?
Arthur slowly stood, Emily still in his arms.
Only then did he turn toward Victoria.
His face revealed nothing.
No sadness.
No confusion.
Just stillness.
That terrified Victoria more than shouting ever could.
She took one cautious step forward.
"You believe me... don't you?"
Arthur spoke only four words.
"Margaret."
"Yes, sir?"
"Call Dr. Lawson."
Margaret nodded immediately.
"And call security."
Victoria blinked.
"Security?"
Arthur never looked away from her.
"Nobody leaves this house."
Victoria laughed nervously.
"Arthur... you're overreacting."
Silence.
"You actually think I'd hurt your daughter?"
Still silence.
She reached toward him.
Arthur stepped back.
Just one step.
Yet it felt like an ocean opening between them.
Victoria's breathing became uneven.
"Arthur..."
He finally spoke.
"Did you touch my daughter?"
The question floated through the room like ice.
Victoria answered too quickly.
"No."
Margaret closed her eyes.
She knew that tone.
People telling the truth usually searched for words.
Liars already had them prepared.
Arthur looked down at Emily.
His daughter's tiny fingers were still digging into his jacket.
He noticed something.
Bruises.
Fresh fingerprints around her wrist.
Small.
Purple.
His jaw tightened.
He looked back at Victoria.
"Take off your sleeves."
"What?"
"Now."
Victoria hesitated.
Only for a second.
Too long.
Arthur noticed.
"So there is something to hide."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Arthur's voice became frighteningly calm.
"If you don't roll them up..."
"I'll have security do it."
Victoria's heartbeat pounded inside her ears.
She slowly rolled back one sleeve.
Nothing.
Then the other.
Three long scratches.
Still bleeding.
Margaret spoke quietly.
"Emily scratched her trying to get away."
Victoria immediately shook her head.
"The cat."
"We don't own a cat."
Silence returned.
Heavy.
Crushing.
Arthur's phone vibrated.
His assistant.
He ignored it.
Then another vibration.
Then another.
He ignored those too.
Nothing mattered except the little girl shaking in his arms.
Emily slowly lifted her head.
"Daddy..."
Arthur looked down.
She whispered something so quietly only he could hear.
His entire body froze.
His eyes widened.
The color drained from his face.
Victoria couldn't hear the words.
Neither could Margaret.
But whatever Emily had whispered...
It changed everything.
Arthur looked at Victoria with an expression neither woman had ever seen before.
Not anger.
Not disappointment.
Recognition.
As though an impossible puzzle had suddenly become clear.
Without another word, he handed Emily gently to Margaret.
Then he reached into his pocket.
Removed his phone.
Pressed one number.
When the call connected, his voice became cold enough to freeze the room.
"Lock every gate."
"No one enters."
"No one leaves."
"And bring me the basement security recordings."
Victoria's knees nearly gave out.
The basement?
No.
No...
Those cameras...
She thought they had been disconnected months ago.
Arthur slowly ended the call.
Then he asked one final question.
May you like
A question that made Victoria's blood run cold.
"What exactly were you doing in the basement with Emily... three nights ago?"
