CHAPTER 8: THE FIRE NO ONE REMEMBERED

The words remained on every monitor.

WELCOME BACK, ARTHUR. I'VE BEEN WAITING.

No blinking cursor.

No signature.

No countdown.

Just the sentence.

Daniel immediately yanked the network cable from the computer.

The screens stayed on.

He pulled the power cord.

Nothing changed.

The monitors continued glowing.

Emily felt a knot tighten in her stomach.

"That's impossible."

Daniel stared at the dead power cable hanging from his hand.

"No..."

"It isn't."

He slowly backed away.

"These monitors aren't receiving a live signal."

Marcus frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel swallowed.

"They're playing something stored inside the hardware itself."

Arthur's face grew pale.

"He knew we'd come here."

The message disappeared.

Static flooded the screens.

A low hiss filled the room.

Then an old video began to play.

The date stamp read:

October 14, 2004

Twenty-two years earlier.

The image shook violently, as if filmed by a cheap handheld camcorder.

A sprawling estate came into view.

Marcus leaned forward.

"Our family house."

Arthur nodded silently.

The footage continued.

Children laughed somewhere off camera.

A woman called everyone inside for dinner.

For one brief moment...

The scene looked perfectly ordinary.

Then smoke appeared.

Thin at first.

Curling from an upstairs window.

Someone screamed.

The camera swung wildly toward the mansion.

Flames burst through the roof.

People ran in every direction.

Servants.

Security guards.

Neighbors.

The person holding the camera kept running toward the house instead of away from it.

Emily watched the timestamp.

The footage lasted barely three minutes.

Yet it felt endless.

A man kicked open the front door.

Another carried a child outside.

Someone shouted,

"There's another one upstairs!"

Arthur slowly lowered his head.

Marcus whispered,

"I remember the fire."

Arthur looked at him.

"No."

"You remember what came after."

The video froze.

A single frame remained on screen.

A firefighter stood near the burning staircase.

In his arms...

A little girl.

Her face was covered in soot.

Only her frightened eyes were visible.

Marcus frowned.

"That's Ava."

Arthur answered quietly.

"No."

Marcus looked again.

The girl looked exactly like his little sister.

The same blond hair.

The same pink pajamas.

The same rabbit clutched against her chest.

Arthur spoke carefully.

"Look at the left wrist."

Emily zoomed in using the computer.

A tiny birthmark.

Shaped like a crescent moon.

Marcus's breathing stopped.

"Ava doesn't have that."

Arthur nodded.

"Neither did Isabella."

Silence.

Emily frowned.

"Then..."

"Who is she?"

Arthur didn't answer.

Instead...

He opened the leather folder one last time.

From a hidden pocket inside the cover, he removed a yellowed newspaper clipping.

Its headline read:

THREE CHILDREN RESCUED FROM BLACKWELL ESTATE FIRE

Marcus immediately noticed the problem.

"There were only two children."

Arthur slid the article across the table.

"No."

"There were three."

Marcus scanned the faded text.

His heartbeat quickened.

The article listed the names of the rescued children.

Marcus Blackwell.

Ava Blackwell.

And...

Evelyn Vale.

Emily looked up.

"E.V."

Arthur nodded slowly.

"The initials you've been chasing."

Marcus stared at the newspaper.

"I've never heard that name."

Arthur sighed.

"That was the point."

Daniel suddenly stood.

"I know Evelyn Vale."

Every eye turned toward him.

"You do?"

He nodded.

"I didn't recognize the initials."

"But the full name..."

He swallowed.

"My grandmother worked as a nurse."

"She mentioned a girl called Evelyn."

Marcus leaned forward.

"What happened to her?"

Daniel's expression darkened.

"No one knows."

"My grandmother only ever said one thing."

"What?"

Daniel looked toward Arthur.

"That the girl disappeared the same night as the fire."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"She didn't disappear."

Emily felt another realization forming.

"Someone made sure she disappeared."

Arthur nodded.

"They erased her."

Marcus frowned.

"Just like Isabella."

Arthur looked at him carefully.

"No."

"Worse."

"They erased Evelyn..."

"...before they erased Isabella."

Marcus paced the room.

"None of this makes sense."

Arthur answered softly.

"It will."

"When you stop assuming Isabella was always the center of the story."

Emily looked between them.

"You think she wasn't?"

Arthur slowly shook his head.

"No."

"I think she was chasing someone."

Marcus froze.

"Evelyn."

Arthur nodded.

"For twenty-two years."

Daniel suddenly remembered something.

"The hotel's guest database."

"What about it?" Emily asked.

"When I still had access..."

"I found a reservation that never appeared on public records."

Marcus frowned.

"Whose?"

Daniel hesitated.

"I thought it was a typo."

"The guest checked in every year."

"Always on October 14."

"The anniversary of the fire."

Emily felt goosebumps rise on her arms.

"The name?"

Daniel looked directly at Arthur.

"Evelyn Vale."

Silence.

Marcus whispered,

"Impossible."

Arthur didn't answer.

Instead, he slowly unfolded another document from the folder.

A hotel invoice.

Paid in cash.

Every year.

Room 1408.

For twenty-two consecutive years.

Always under the same name.

Always for one night.

Emily stared at the stack.

"If someone has been checking into this hotel every year..."

"...then Evelyn might still be alive."

Arthur nodded.

"That's exactly what Isabella believes."

Marcus frowned.

"Believes?"

Arthur looked at him.

"She's never actually found Evelyn."

A sudden beep interrupted the conversation.

Daniel looked down at the portable hard drive.

A hidden partition had unlocked by itself.

None of them had touched the keyboard.

A single new file appeared.

IF YOU FOUND THIS, YOU'RE ALREADY LATE.

Emily hesitated.

Marcus clicked it open.

A woman's face filled the screen.

She looked to be in her forties.

Calm.

Intelligent.

Her hair streaked with gray.

Behind her was a plain office wall.

No identifying details.

She looked directly into the camera.

"My name..."

She paused.

"...is Evelyn Vale."

Everyone in the room froze.

"If you're watching this..."

"...Arthur has finally decided to tell you the truth."

Arthur slowly lowered his head.

Evelyn continued.

"Marcus..."

Her expression softened.

"You've spent your entire life believing you lost one sister."

She took a long breath.

"I'm afraid..."

"...you actually lost two."

The video suddenly cut to black.

A new line of text appeared.

PART 2 REQUIRES AUTHORIZATION: VICTOR.

Before anyone could react...

The heavy steel door of the control room locked itself with a deafening clang.

An electronic voice echoed through the speakers.

"Authorization denied."

Then another voice followed.

Calm.

Deep.

Unmistakably male.

"You've watched enough for one night."

Arthur's face went completely white.

Marcus slowly turned toward him.

"Victor."

May you like

Arthur nodded once.

"He's here."
