CHAPTER 13: THE SURVIVORS

The three black SUVs rolled to a stop outside the observatory.

Their engines idled.

No headlights.

No flashing emergency lights.

Just silence.

Even Isabella's armed men hesitated.

They had expected police.

Perhaps reinforcements.

Not this.

The driver's door of the first SUV opened.

An elderly woman stepped out.

She wore a dark gray coat despite the summer night.

Her silver hair was tied neatly behind her head.

Nothing about her appearance suggested danger.

Yet every person standing beside Isabella instinctively lowered their weapons.

Emily noticed it immediately.

"They know her."

Victor quietly nodded.

"Yes."

Marcus frowned.

"Who is she?"

Victor answered in a voice almost filled with regret.

"Dr. Helena Ward."

Arthur's eyes widened.

"No..."

"I thought she was dead."

"So did everyone else."

The elderly woman walked slowly through the shattered entrance.

She carried no weapon.

Only a leather folder tucked beneath one arm.

When she reached the center of the observatory, she stopped.

Her gaze settled on Marcus.

She smiled sadly.

"You've grown into your father."

Marcus remained cautious.

"Do I know you?"

"No."

"You were made to forget."

Those words landed with familiar weight.

Emily watched Helena carefully.

Unlike Isabella, Helena didn't command the room through fear.

She did it through certainty.

She spoke as someone who had spent decades carrying answers no one wanted.

Helena looked toward Victor.

"You kept your promise."

Victor lowered his head slightly.

"Barely."

She nodded once.

"It was enough."

Isabella took one deliberate step forward.

"I'm tired of riddles."

"So am I."

Helena met Isabella's eyes without flinching.

"For twenty-two years."

"You've hunted the wrong enemy."

Isabella laughed once.

Cold.

Humorless.

"Have I?"

Helena slowly opened the leather folder.

Inside were dozens of aging medical files.

Every page bore the same institutional seal.

Marcus recognized the logo immediately.

Blackwell Children's Research Foundation.

His father's charity.

Or so he had always believed.

Helena placed one file on the table.

Patient Name:

Evelyn Vale

Emily leaned closer.

Another line caught her eye.

Cognitive Observation Program

Marcus frowned.

"What is that?"

Helena answered quietly.

"It was never a charity."

The room fell silent.

Arthur closed his eyes.

"I begged your father to shut it down."

Marcus turned sharply.

"What program?"

Arthur whispered,

"They believed memories could be studied."

Emily felt her pulse quicken.

"Studied?"

Helena corrected her.

"Changed."

Daniel stared at the file.

"You mean..."

She nodded.

"Selective memory modification."

Marcus stepped backward.

"No."

"My father would never..."

Helena interrupted him gently.

"Your father ended it."

"But he didn't start it."

Emily slowly understood.

Every missing memory.

Every altered photograph.

Every forgotten face.

This hadn't begun with Victor.

Or Isabella.

Or even the fire.

It had begun long before.

With research.

Isabella's voice became unusually quiet.

"So."

"It was all real."

Helena looked at her.

"Yes."

"You weren't imagining the missing years."

For the first time since Emily had met her...

The carefully controlled expression on Isabella's face cracked.

Not with rage.

With grief.

"You let me believe..."

"...I was losing my mind."

Helena answered honestly.

"I thought forgetting would let you heal."

Isabella laughed bitterly.

"You erased my childhood."

"You erased my family."

"You erased Evelyn."

"And then you called it treatment."

No one spoke.

Even Victor remained silent.

Marcus looked at Helena.

"What happened after the fire?"

Helena took a long breath.

"Your father destroyed the research."

"He ordered every document burned."

"Every experiment stopped."

"Every patient relocated."

Marcus frowned.

"Every patient?"

Helena nodded.

"There were seven children."

Emily felt the air leave her lungs.

"Not one?"

Helena looked at her.

"Evelyn was never the only child."

Daniel whispered,

"Then where are the others?"

Helena's face darkened.

"We don't know."

"Some disappeared."

"Some died."

"Some built new lives."

"And one..."

She looked toward Isabella.

"...spent twenty-two years trying to remember."

Emily realized the story had quietly shifted.

The wedding.

The video.

The murder.

The kidnapping.

None of them had been the beginning.

They had been the consequences.

Suddenly...

One of Isabella's guards ran inside.

"Ma'am!"

She turned.

"What?"

"We've searched every vehicle."

"And?"

"No passengers."

Everyone frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"There were three SUVs..."

"...but nobody was driving."

Silence.

Emily looked toward the entrance.

The vehicles still stood exactly where they had stopped.

Empty.

Impossible.

Daniel whispered,

"I saw them arrive."

"So did I," Marcus replied.

Helena slowly closed her eyes.

"No..."

Victor's expression changed instantly.

"Get down!"

He lunged toward Emily.

At that exact second...

A brilliant white light erupted from all three SUVs simultaneously.

The observatory windows exploded inward.

A deafening shockwave ripped through the building.

The ancient telescope crashed to the floor.

Dust swallowed everything.

Emily couldn't hear.

Couldn't see.

Only ringing.

When the dust slowly settled...

Half the observatory roof had collapsed.

Marcus struggled to his feet.

"Emily!"

"I'm here!"

"Arthur?"

A weak voice answered somewhere beneath broken stone.

Victor was gone.

Isabella was gone.

Helena was gone.

So were nearly all the armed guards.

Only scattered footprints remained in the dust.

Leading toward a narrow staircase descending beneath the observatory.

Daniel pointed with shaking hands.

"There's... another level."

Marcus looked at the brass key still clenched in his fist.

Then toward the hidden staircase.

The key suddenly felt heavier than before.

On its handle, beneath decades of dirt and tarnish...

A tiny engraving had become visible after the blast.

Just two letters.

E.V.

Marcus looked up.

"Evelyn wasn't hiding from the world..."

He swallowed hard.

"...she was hiding something beneath it."

May you like

Without another word, he started down the staircase.

Into the darkness below.
