CHAPTER 11: THE OBSERVATORY

The night air hit them like ice.
For the first time in hours, Emily stepped outside the hotel.
Fire engines still surrounded the building.
News helicopters circled overhead, their searchlights sweeping across the smoke-darkened sky.
Police officers directed frightened guests away from the entrance.
No one noticed the four figures slipping through an unlit service alley behind the hotel.
Marcus glanced back once.
His wedding reception had become a national news story.
Television reporters stood beneath bright floodlights, repeating the same narrative.
A malfunction in the hotel's electrical system.
A successful evacuation.
No confirmed casualties.
The lies had already begun.
Daniel drove.
His aging maintenance van rattled through nearly empty streets, heading toward the abandoned Riverside Observatory overlooking the river.
No one spoke for several minutes.
Emily sat in the passenger seat with Victor's journal resting on her lap.
She kept returning to the same page.
They always mark the witnesses.
Witnesses.
Not victims.
Not suspects.
Witnesses.
Someone wanted people who had seen something.
Marcus finally broke the silence.
"If Evelyn witnessed something twenty-two years ago..."
He looked toward Arthur.
"...why didn't anyone ask her what she saw?"
Arthur stared out the window.
"They did."
Marcus frowned.
"And?"
Arthur closed his eyes.
"She wouldn't speak."
The van climbed the final hill.
The observatory emerged from the darkness.
Once a popular science museum, it had been abandoned years earlier after structural damage.
Its enormous white dome stood cracked beneath the moonlight.
Broken windows reflected the river below.
Emily felt an uneasy chill.
"It doesn't look abandoned."
Marcus followed her gaze.
Several lights glowed faintly inside.
Not electricity.
Lanterns.
Someone had prepared the place.
Daniel parked nearly two hundred meters away.
"We walk from here."
Arthur nodded.
"Victor never chooses a meeting place without planning every entrance."
Emily slipped the journal into her backpack.
Marcus quietly checked the compact flashlight he had taken from the hotel.
No weapons.
Only tools.
Only questions.
Inside the observatory...
Dust floated through shafts of moonlight pouring from the cracked dome above.
Ancient telescopes stood like forgotten monuments.
Old astronomy posters peeled from the walls.
The silence felt almost sacred.
Then...
A single desk lamp switched on.
At the center of the room.
Beside it sat a man.
He wore a dark overcoat.
Black leather gloves.
His face remained hidden beneath the shadow cast by the lamp.
Marcus immediately noticed the silver watch.
A deep scratch marked the bezel.
Arthur stopped walking.
For the first time since Emily had met him...
He looked genuinely afraid.
The man spoke without rising.
"You came."
His voice was calm.
Older than Marcus had expected.
Measured.
Controlled.
Marcus stepped forward.
"Victor."
The man inclined his head slightly.
"So that's the name you know."
Emily studied him carefully.
His left jaw carried the same long surgical scar they had seen in the reflection.
He noticed her looking.
"It healed badly."
He said it almost conversationally.
"Fire tends to do that."
No one moved closer.
Victor gestured toward four empty chairs.
"Please."
"We have little time."
Marcus remained standing.
"You kidnapped my sister."
Victor looked at him.
"I protected your sister."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
"I expect you to verify it."
Emily narrowed her eyes.
"You've manipulated us from the beginning."
Victor nodded once.
"Yes."
"And yet..."
He looked directly at Emily.
"...you're all still alive."
The words lingered.
Emily hated that they were true.
If Victor had truly wanted them dead...
There had been countless opportunities.
Arthur finally spoke.
"Why now?"
Victor looked at his old friend for a long moment.
"Because the timeline changed."
Arthur frowned.
"What changed?"
Victor answered with a single name.
"Isabella."
Marcus took another step.
"Enough riddles."
"My sister."
"Now."
Victor calmly reached into his coat.
Marcus instantly raised the flashlight like a weapon.
Victor stopped.
Slowly.
He removed...
A folded photograph.
Not a gun.
Not a phone.
He slid the photograph across the dusty table.
Marcus picked it up.
Ava smiled into the camera.
She wore clean clothes.
She appeared healthy.
Behind her stood a calendar.
Today's date.
Proof of life.
Emily exhaled quietly.
Victor spoke.
"She is alive."
Marcus looked up.
"Where?"
"I won't tell you."
Marcus's anger flared.
"You brought us here for this?"
Victor remained calm.
"I brought you here because if you know where she is..."
"...Isabella will know within the hour."
Daniel frowned.
"How?"
Victor looked toward Marcus.
"Because someone close to you has been reporting every movement."
Silence.
Emily instinctively glanced around the room.
Arthur.
Daniel.
Marcus.
Herself.
Only four of them knew about the observatory.
Marcus spoke slowly.
"You're saying one of us..."
Victor finished the sentence.
"...already works for Isabella."
The room fell completely still.
Arthur whispered,
"That's impossible."
Victor's expression didn't change.
"No."
"It is inevitable."
Emily's thoughts raced.
Every safe place had been compromised.
Every secret meeting had somehow become known.
Every plan had failed before it began.
Someone had been leaking information.
Repeatedly.
But who?
Daniel suddenly laughed once.
A dry, humorless laugh.
"We're doing exactly what he wants."
Marcus looked at him.
"What?"
"We're starting to distrust each other."
Victor nodded approvingly.
"Good."
Emily frowned.
"You planned this."
Victor answered honestly.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because trust built on lies..."
He looked toward Marcus.
"...is more dangerous than suspicion built on truth."
Marcus slammed both hands onto the old wooden table.
"I don't care about philosophy!"
"I want answers!"
Victor looked at him steadily.
"You've been asking the wrong question since the wedding."
Marcus stared.
Victor continued.
"You keep asking..."
'Who kidnapped Ava?'
He leaned slightly forward.
"The better question is..."
'Why did Isabella need Ava alive?'
Marcus froze.
Emily slowly turned toward Victor.
"What do you mean?"
Victor looked at the cracked observatory dome overhead.
"When the answer is revealed..."
He said quietly,
"...you will understand why Evelyn disappeared."
Before anyone could press him further...
The observatory lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A deafening crash shattered the front entrance.
Glass exploded across the floor.
Several flashlights snapped on simultaneously outside.
Then a woman's voice echoed through the darkness.
Elegant.
Cold.
Familiar.
"Victor..."
A pause.
"I've spent twenty-two years looking for you."
Isabella.
Victor did not move.
Instead...
He closed his eyes for a single second.
Then whispered words that chilled everyone in the room.
"She came sooner than I hoped."
Outside...
The beam of dozens of tactical flashlights swept across the observatory floor.
Someone gave a sharp command.
May you like
Heavy boots thundered toward the entrance.
The hunt had reached them.
