CHAPTER 7: THE MAN BEHIND THE CAMERA

The floorboard creaked again.

Not loudly.

Just enough.

Marcus extinguished the emergency lantern with one quick motion.

Darkness swallowed the control room.

Emily instinctively slipped the leather folder beneath an old electrical cabinet while Arthur held his breath, one hand pressed against the bandage covering his wounded shoulder.

No one spoke.

The footsteps outside remained perfectly still.

Listening.

Waiting.

Marcus silently picked up a rusted steel wrench from the floor and positioned himself beside the door.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Fifteen.

The doorknob turned.

Slowly.

Marcus tightened his grip.

The door opened just a few inches.

A flashlight beam swept across the dusty floor.

Marcus moved.

He slammed the door wide open, seized the figure by the arm, and drove him against the concrete wall before the stranger could react.

The flashlight clattered across the floor.

Emily rushed forward.

The stranger raised both hands immediately.

"Wait!"

"I'm not armed!"

Marcus didn't loosen his grip.

"Who sent you?"

"No one."

"Liar."

"I've been looking for Arthur."

Arthur stepped forward from the darkness.

"I know him."

Marcus glanced back.

"You do?"

Arthur nodded slowly.

"His name is Daniel Brooks."

The young man, no older than thirty, rubbed his bruised shoulder and gave Arthur a tired smile.

"I was beginning to think you'd forgotten me."

Marcus finally released him.

Daniel adjusted his wrinkled maintenance uniform.

He looked like an ordinary electrician.

Nothing about him stood out except his exhausted eyes.

Emily studied him carefully.

"You work here?"

"I did."

"What does that mean?"

"I was fired six months ago."

Arthur answered before Daniel could.

"He wasn't fired."

"He disappeared."

Daniel smiled bitterly.

"That's one way to describe it."

Marcus folded his arms.

"Start explaining."

Daniel looked at each of them before speaking.

"I installed the hotel's surveillance network three years ago."

Emily frowned.

"So you've seen everything?"

Daniel shook his head.

"Not everything."

"Only what they wanted me to see."

He reached into his backpack and pulled out a small portable hard drive.

"I built the original security system."

"Six months later..."

"...someone rebuilt it."

Marcus looked at the device.

"Who?"

Daniel answered without hesitation.

"Victor."

The name settled heavily over the room.

Arthur lowered his eyes.

Marcus immediately noticed.

"You know him."

Arthur remained silent.

Daniel answered instead.

"No one really knows Victor."

Emily crossed her arms.

"Convenient answer."

"It's the truth."

Daniel placed the hard drive on the table.

"I've never seen his face."

"I've only heard his voice."

"And every order inside this hotel..."

"...comes through him."

Marcus frowned.

"Not Isabella?"

Daniel shook his head.

"She's powerful."

"But even she answers to someone."

Arthur quietly closed his eyes.

Emily noticed.

"You already knew."

Arthur sighed.

"I suspected."

Daniel connected the hard drive to an old maintenance computer sitting in the corner.

The ancient monitor flickered to life.

Rows of surveillance footage appeared.

Different dates.

Different locations.

Hotel hallways.

Conference rooms.

Parking garages.

Marcus leaned closer.

"What am I looking at?"

Daniel clicked through dozens of files.

"Hidden recordings."

"Not from the official cameras."

"My backups."

Emily watched clip after clip.

Employees.

Guests.

Security guards.

Nothing unusual.

Then Daniel opened another file.

The timestamp read:

Three Months Earlier.

The screen showed Marcus entering the hotel lobby.

He was alone.

No wedding.

No Isabella.

Just a business meeting.

Marcus frowned.

"I remember this."

Daniel fast-forwarded several minutes.

Marcus entered an elevator.

The doors closed.

Then...

Something strange happened.

The elevator stopped between floors.

The lights flickered.

A man wearing a black suit entered.

His face remained hidden beneath a baseball cap.

The two spoke for nearly four minutes.

There was no audio.

Marcus stared.

"I've never seen him."

Daniel paused the video.

"You did."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"I would've remembered."

Arthur spoke quietly.

"Not if your memories were altered afterward."

Emily slowly turned toward Marcus.

"You've lost more than childhood memories."

Marcus's face drained of color.

Daniel resumed the footage.

The mysterious man handed Marcus a sealed envelope.

Marcus opened it.

Read something.

Then...

Collapsed.

Not dramatically.

Almost peacefully.

As though he had simply fallen asleep.

The man caught him before he hit the floor.

Another figure entered the elevator.

A woman.

Her face remained hidden.

She injected something into Marcus's neck.

Thirty seconds later...

The elevator resumed moving.

When the doors opened...

Marcus stepped out smiling.

Looking perfectly normal.

Emily whispered,

"...You were drugged."

Marcus stared at the frozen frame.

"I don't remember any of this."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"Because they didn't want you to."

Daniel opened another video.

"This one is from five days later."

Again...

Marcus entered the hotel.

Again...

The elevator stopped unexpectedly.

Again...

The same hidden man appeared.

This time...

Marcus willingly handed him a flash drive.

Emily frowned.

"What was on it?"

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"Your company's defense contracts."

Marcus's eyes widened.

"I would never..."

"You did."

"I don't even remember bringing one."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

Silence filled the room.

Marcus slowly sat down.

For the first time since this nightmare had begun...

He wasn't questioning Isabella.

He was questioning himself.

How many decisions had truly been his?

How many memories belonged to him?

And how many had been carefully manufactured?

Arthur finally broke the silence.

"They've been shaping your life."

"For years."

Marcus looked up.

"Who?"

Arthur answered with only two words.

"Victor has."

Emily asked the question no one else had dared to ask.

"Why?"

Arthur looked toward the old photograph still lying on the table.

"Because Marcus was never the final target."

Emily frowned.

"Then who was?"

Arthur pointed at the picture.

"Ava."

Daniel suddenly froze.

He stared at one corner of the monitor.

His breathing became shallow.

"No..."

Emily looked at the screen.

"What?"

Daniel zoomed in.

A reflection in a hotel window.

Barely visible.

Someone had been watching the hidden camera itself.

A man wearing black leather gloves.

The same scratched silver watch Arthur had recognized from Ava's proof-of-life video.

Victor.

Only this time...

Part of his face appeared in the reflection.

Not enough to identify him.

But enough to reveal something unexpected.

A long surgical scar ran from beneath his left ear to the corner of his jaw.

Arthur stumbled backward.

Emily caught him before he fell.

"You know that scar."

Arthur closed his eyes.

His voice was barely audible.

"I saw it twenty-two years ago."

Marcus stared.

"Where?"

Arthur swallowed hard.

"The night..."

"...everyone believed Victor died."

Outside the control room...

A distant hotel clock chimed midnight.

At that exact moment, every computer monitor suddenly shut off.

Then, one by one, they powered back on without anyone touching them.

A single sentence appeared across every screen in white letters against a black background:

WELCOME BACK, ARTHUR. I'VE BEEN WAITING.
