CHAPTER 1: THE FIFTEEN SECONDS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The crystal water glass exploded before anyone understood what had happened.

A violent crack echoed across the grand ballroom as glittering shards scattered over the white linen tablecloth like frozen diamonds.

Gasps rippled through the wedding guests.

The violin quartet stopped playing.

Hundreds of eyes turned toward the same table.

Emily Carter stood frozen beside it, still clutching the silver water pitcher that suddenly felt as heavy as concrete.

Across from her stood the bride.

Isabella Monroe.

America's newest billionaire bride.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Perfect.

At least...

That was what every magazine in the country believed.

No one noticed the subtle change in Isabella's smile.

It disappeared.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

As though someone had flipped a switch.

Her eyes darkened.

Cold.

Emotionless.

Predatory.

"You stupid little waitress," Isabella whispered, just loud enough for Emily to hear.

Before Emily could apologize...

SMACK!

A heavy linen napkin whipped across her face like a leather strap.

The sharp edge sliced against her cheek.

Pain exploded across her skin.

The ballroom fell silent.

No one moved.

No one dared.

Emily stumbled backward, one trembling hand covering the burning mark spreading across her face.

"I..."

"I'm sorry, ma'am..."

"You ruined my wedding table."

"I'll clean everything."

"I'm so sorry."

Isabella stepped closer.

"So sorry?"

Her voice remained calm.

Almost gentle.

"But sorry doesn't erase embarrassment."

She leaned close enough that Emily could smell the expensive perfume on her skin.

"You people never learn."

Another slap.

This time with her bare hand.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

Guests exchanged uneasy glances.

Some looked away.

Others secretly reached for their phones.

Yet nobody intervened.

Because everyone knew who Isabella Monroe was.

Or rather...

Who they believed she was.

A billionaire philanthropist.

A charity ambassador.

A future senator's daughter.

The perfect woman.

Standing only a few feet away, the groom finally rose from his chair.

Marcus Blackwell.

Founder of Blackwell Dynamics.

One of the youngest billionaires in America.

He frowned.

"Isabella."

His voice carried quiet authority.

"That's enough."

She immediately smiled.

The transformation was almost frightening.

"I'm just emotional."

She gently touched Marcus's arm.

"It's the happiest day of my life."

Several guests chuckled nervously.

The tension faded.

Almost.

Emily lowered her head.

She should walk away.

Forget everything.

Finish her shift.

Collect her paycheck.

Go home.

That was the smart decision.

That was the safe decision.

But then...

Her phone vibrated inside her apron.

One notification.

The screen lit up.

Her fingers instinctively touched it.

A thumbnail appeared.

Fifteen seconds.

Recorded only thirty minutes earlier.

Emily's breathing stopped.

Not because of the notification.

Because she remembered exactly what the video contained.

She hadn't meant to record it.

She'd simply been testing her phone camera while arranging flowers in the private bridal lounge upstairs.

She thought the room was empty.

It wasn't.

The recording had captured Isabella standing beside a terrified young woman wearing a hotel housekeeper uniform.

The woman was crying.

Begging.

"I swear..."

"I never told anyone..."

"I don't know anything..."

Isabella smiled.

The same beautiful smile she wore for television cameras.

Then...

Without warning...

She shoved the woman hard enough to send her crashing into a marble fireplace.

The woman's head struck the stone with a sickening crack.

She collapsed.

Motionless.

Emily remembered freezing outside the half-open door.

She hadn't dared enter.

Hadn't dared scream.

Hadn't even dared breathe.

She simply stopped recording...

Stuffed the phone into her apron...

And ran.

Since then...

She had convinced herself she'd imagined everything.

Maybe the woman was alive.

Maybe security had helped her.

Maybe...

Maybe...

Maybe.

But now...

Standing in front of Isabella again...

Looking directly into those same empty eyes...

Emily realized there had been no mistake.

She had witnessed something monstrous.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

Across the ballroom...

Isabella noticed.

Only for a fraction of a second.

But Emily saw it.

The bride's gaze dropped toward the apron pocket.

Then back to Emily's face.

A tiny wrinkle appeared between Isabella's eyebrows.

Suspicion.

Marcus noticed neither woman moving.

"What is it?"

Emily looked up.

Their eyes met.

She almost spoke.

Almost.

Then Isabella interrupted.

"Sweetheart..."

She laughed softly.

"The poor girl is obviously frightened."

Several guests laughed with her.

Emily swallowed.

If she said anything now...

Would anyone believe her?

Against Isabella?

Impossible.

She slowly stepped backward.

"I'll..."

"I'll clean the glass."

Isabella smiled.

"Good girl."

Emily turned away.

Every instinct screamed at her to leave.

Run.

Disappear.

Instead...

She walked toward the service hallway.

Trying not to shake.

Trying not to cry.

Behind her...

The orchestra resumed.

Champagne glasses clinked again.

The wedding continued.

As though nothing had happened.

The moment the service door closed...

Emily pulled out her phone.

The fifteen-second clip was still there.

Untouched.

She watched it once.

Then again.

Then a third time.

Each replay revealed something new.

The terrified maid.

The shove.

The impact.

But on the fourth viewing...

Emily noticed something she'd completely missed.

There was another reflection.

Barely visible.

In the polished mirror behind Isabella.

Someone else had been inside the room.

Watching everything.

A man.

His face wasn't clear.

Only part of it.

Enough to recognize one thing.

He wasn't afraid.

He was smiling.

A slow...

Satisfied...

Terrifying smile.

Emily's blood turned cold.

Footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Not one pair.

Several.

Heavy.

Fast.

Someone shouted...

"Check every exit!"

Another voice answered...

"The bride says the waitress stole something!"

Emily's eyes widened.

She hadn't stolen anything.

She understood instantly.

They weren't looking for stolen jewelry.

They were looking...

For the phone.

She looked down at the glowing screen.

Then toward the emergency exit only twenty feet away.

Then back toward the approaching footsteps.

The voices were getting closer.

Closer.

Closer.

A shadow appeared beneath the service room door.

Someone stopped outside.

May you like

The handle slowly began to turn.
