CHAPTER 4: THE MAN MY FAMILY ERASED

The photograph remained on the giant screen.

Frozen.

Unmoving.

A ghost from a past nobody wanted me to see.

The entire ballroom stared upward.

And I stared at the man who had haunted my life without ever being there.

My father.

I had seen pictures of him before.

Or at least...

I thought I had.

A blurry image hidden in an old drawer.

A faded photograph my grandmother quickly removed from my hands when I was younger.

A name that disappeared whenever I asked questions.

Every time I mentioned him, someone changed the subject.

“He was complicated.”

“That was a long time ago.”

“You don’t need to know about him.”

Those were the answers I always received.

But now his face was projected above hundreds of people.

And beneath it was a sentence that made my entire body go cold.

“Alexander Vale: Former partner of Hart Jewelry. Removed from the company after accusations of betrayal and financial fraud.”

Betrayal.

Fraud.

Those words echoed through the room.

I felt like the floor beneath me had cracked open.

Because my entire life, I had been told the Hart family was built on honor.

On tradition.

On trust.

My grandmother always said diamonds could survive pressure.

She believed people could too.

But now I was discovering that my family had been built on a secret.

Vanessa watched my reaction.

She looked satisfied.

Almost relieved.

Like she had finally opened a door that had been locked for twenty years.

“Surprised?”

Her voice cut through the silence.

I turned toward her.

“What did you do?”

She raised an eyebrow.

“Excuse me?”

“You brought this up.”

My voice became stronger.

“You planned this.”

A few people nearby whispered.

Vanessa smiled.

“Of course I planned it.”

The honesty shocked me.

She didn’t even bother denying it.

“Tonight was supposed to be my biggest moment.”

She touched the necklace around her neck.

“The world was supposed to see me as the true successor of Hart Jewelry.”

Then her eyes narrowed.

“But your little interruption ruined that.”

“My interruption?”

I laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed my dress.”

“And you brought documents that embarrassed me.”

Her smile faded.

“So yes. We both ruined each other’s evening.”

I stared at her.

For years, I had tried to understand Vanessa.

I wondered why she hated me.

Why she always competed with me.

Why she acted like my existence threatened her.

But now I finally understood.

Vanessa wasn’t fighting against me.

She was fighting against a truth.

A truth she had been afraid of all along.

Mr. Bellamy stepped forward.

“Enough.”

His voice carried through the room.

“This is not the place.”

Vanessa turned sharply.

“No.”

She pointed toward the crowd.

“This is exactly the place.”

She looked around.

“These people came here to celebrate the Hart legacy.”

A pause.

“So let them finally know what that legacy really is.”

The cameras moved closer.

Reporters whispered.

Phones appeared in people’s hands.

Everyone knew they were witnessing something bigger than a family argument.

This was a scandal.

A luxury empire collapsing in real time.

I looked at Mr. Bellamy.

“Please.”

My voice softened.

“I need to know.”

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked older than ever.

Then he nodded.

“Your father was not the man they claimed he was.”

The room became silent again.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“What?”

Mr. Bellamy continued.

“Alexander Vale was brilliant.”

He looked at the screen.

“He understood gemstones better than anyone I have ever met.”

I felt my heart tighten.

“Then why was he accused?”

Mr. Bellamy looked at me.

“Because someone needed him gone.”

A wave of whispers spread.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

But Mr. Bellamy continued.

“Your grandmother knew the truth.”

He opened the leather folder.

“She knew Alexander had been framed.”

My breathing stopped.

“Framed?”

“Yes.”

He pulled out another document.

“Twenty years ago, someone altered company records. Money disappeared. Confidential designs were leaked.”

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“And Alexander was blamed.”

The room shifted.

Everyone noticed.

Because Vanessa noticed too.

“You’re accusing me?”

Her voice became sharper.

Mr. Bellamy didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The silence was enough.

Vanessa stepped back.

“You have no idea what you’re saying.”

“Oh, I know exactly what I’m saying.”

Mr. Bellamy looked at me.

“Your grandmother discovered the truth before she died.”

My fingers trembled.

“What truth?”

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“That the person responsible for destroying your father’s reputation was still inside the Hart family.”

My blood ran cold.

Inside the family.

Someone close.

Someone who had access.

Someone who benefited from Alexander disappearing.

My eyes slowly moved around the room.

Everyone suddenly looked like a stranger.

Then Vanessa laughed.

But there was no confidence anymore.

Only anger.

“You really want to do this?”

She looked directly at Mr. Bellamy.

“You want everyone to know what Eleanor did?”

My eyebrows tightened.

“What did Grandma do?”

Vanessa looked at me.

And for the first time...

I saw something different in her eyes.

Not hatred.

Not jealousy.

Fear.

“She didn’t just hide your father’s story.”

Vanessa whispered.

“She hid the truth about your birth.”

My entire body froze.

“What?”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You think you know who you are.”

She looked at the necklace.

“You think you are the rightful heir.”

A pause.

“But your grandmother knew that if the world discovered who you really were…”

She leaned closer.

“Everything would collapse.”

The lights above us flickered.

A sudden power interruption.

The ballroom went dark for three seconds.

Three seconds of complete silence.

Then emergency lights turned on.

And when everyone could see again...

The document Mr. Bellamy had placed on the table was gone.

Someone had taken it.

Everyone started looking around.

Security moved.

Guests whispered.

Mr. Bellamy’s face changed.

Because he knew exactly what happened.

He turned toward Vanessa.

But Vanessa was no longer standing there.

She had disappeared.

I looked toward the exit.

My heart started racing.

Because Vanessa hadn’t just escaped.

She had taken the one document that could reveal the truth.

And as I ran after her, I heard my phone suddenly ring.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice spoke quietly.

A voice I had never heard before.

But the words made my blood freeze.

“Stop looking for the truth about your father.”

I stopped walking.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then the stranger said:

“Because your grandmother didn’t hide him from you.”

A breath.

“She hid you from him.”

The call ended.

And for the first time that night...

I wondered if Vanessa had been telling the truth.

Maybe my family’s biggest secret...

Was not what happened to my father.

Maybe the biggest secret...

May you like

Was me.
