CHAPTER 3: THE HEIR WHO WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXIST

For five seconds...

Nobody moved.

The entire ballroom of the Beverly Hills jewelry gala seemed frozen in time.

The music continued playing softly in the background.

The cameras continued flashing.

The guests continued holding their glasses of champagne.

But nobody was really paying attention anymore.

Because Vanessa Hart had just dropped a sentence that changed everything.

“Ask Mr. Bellamy why your grandmother hid your identity for twenty years.”

Those words kept echoing inside my head.

My identity.

What did she mean?

I looked at Mr. Bellamy.

For the first time in my life...

The man who had always seemed impossible to shake looked uncomfortable.

Not scared.

Not nervous.

But like someone who had been carrying a heavy secret for far too long.

“Mr. Bellamy?”

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

“What is she talking about?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

That silence hurt more than any answer could have.

Because silence meant there was something.

Something everyone knew.

Except me.

Vanessa watched us carefully.

And I knew that expression.

She wasn’t just angry.

She wasn’t just trying to embarrass me.

She had been waiting for this moment.

She wanted to see me confused.

She wanted me to question everything.

Because Vanessa had always been strongest when other people were uncertain.

She stepped closer.

“Tell her.”

Her voice was almost playful.

“Tell her why Grandma Eleanor never announced her to the world.”

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Grandma Eleanor.

The name alone carried weight.

My grandmother wasn’t just a jeweler.

She was a legend.

She built the first Hart workshop with her own hands.

She turned a small family business into a luxury empire known around the world.

Every diamond collector knew her name.

Every designer respected her.

And everyone believed Vanessa was the person chosen to continue that legacy.

But apparently...

That was another lie.

Mr. Bellamy finally spoke.

“Not here.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Why not?”

She looked around at the cameras.

“Isn’t this the perfect place?”

Her eyes moved across the crowd.

“Everyone is already watching.”

She knew exactly what she was doing.

She wanted a public battle.

A dramatic scene.

Something that would make tomorrow’s headlines.

But Mr. Bellamy didn’t look at her.

He looked at me.

And I saw something in his eyes.

Regret.

“I’m sorry.”

Those two words hurt.

Because I had spent my entire life believing the people closest to me had protected me.

But now I wondered...

Were they protecting me?

Or hiding something from me?

“Sorry for what?”

I asked.

My voice shook.

Mr. Bellamy looked down.

“Your grandmother made me promise.”

“A promise about what?”

He took a slow breath.

Then Vanessa interrupted.

“She was never supposed to inherit anything.”

My head snapped toward her.

“What?”

Vanessa smiled.

There it was again.

That cruel satisfaction.

“The truth hurts, doesn’t it?”

She touched my necklace.

“My grandmother built this empire. She chose me to continue it.”

She looked around at everyone.

“She trained me. She introduced me to investors. She prepared me for this life.”

Then she looked back at me.

“And you?”

A pause.

“You were kept hidden.”

The words landed like a slap.

Because part of me feared she was right.

Why had my grandmother never announced me?

Why had I spent years working in the workshop while Vanessa attended luxury events?

Why had everyone always treated Vanessa like the future of Hart Jewelry?

I looked at Mr. Bellamy.

“Is it true?”

He remained silent.

And that silence was the answer I didn’t want.

My chest tightened.

For a moment...

I felt like I was back in that workshop years ago.

A little girl watching Vanessa receive praise.

Watching my grandmother congratulate her.

Watching everyone tell Vanessa she was special.

And I remembered something.

Something I had forgotten.

When I was twelve years old, I found an old jewelry sketch hidden in my grandmother’s office.

It was my design.

My first real design.

A small diamond flower.

I had created it after watching my grandmother work.

I proudly showed it to her.

She looked at it for a long time.

Then she smiled.

“You have your mother’s hands.”

I remembered asking:

“Does that mean I can become a jeweler too?”

Her expression changed.

Just for a second.

A sadness crossed her face.

Then she said:

“Not yet.”

Not yet.

Those words had confused me for years.

Now...

I wondered why.

Vanessa moved closer.

“You always wondered why Grandma never let you stand beside me.”

Her voice dropped.

“Now you know.”

I clenched my fists.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, I know exactly what I’m talking about.”

She leaned closer.

“Because I was there.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa smiled.

Then she whispered:

“I know why your grandmother changed her will.”

A chill ran through me.

“And I know why she was afraid of you.”

The room suddenly felt smaller.

“What?”

Vanessa stepped back.

Louder this time, she said:

“Your grandmother didn’t hide you because she wanted to protect you.”

Everyone listened.

“She hid you because she knew what would happen if people found out who your father was.”

My heart stopped.

My father.

A name nobody talked about.

A man who disappeared from every family photograph.

A man my grandmother always avoided discussing.

I stared at Vanessa.

“What did you just say?”

But Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because at that exact moment...

The main screen above the ballroom suddenly turned on.

Everyone looked upward.

A slideshow appeared.

Old photographs.

Documents.

Family records.

And one image in particular.

A photograph of my grandmother standing beside a young man.

A man I had never seen before.

Underneath the picture was a name.

The room went silent.

Because everyone recognized it.

Everyone except me.

Vanessa looked at me.

And for the first time tonight...

She looked like she had won.

Then she said:

“Meet the man your grandmother erased from history.”

I stared at the screen.

My hands went cold.

Because the man in the photograph...

Was my father.

And according to the information displayed beneath his picture...

He wasn’t just a missing family member.

May you like

He was the reason the Hart family almost lost everything.
