CHAPTER 12: THE HEIR WHO WAS NEVER THE HEIR

The ambulance sirens echoed through Beverly Hills.

Red and blue lights painted the walls of the Hart Jewelry building.

The gala was over.

The celebration was gone.

The cameras were gone.

All that remained was chaos.

And one sentence that refused to leave my mind.

“The heir was never supposed to be you.”

Mr. Bellamy’s words repeated over and over.

Like a warning.

Like a confession.

Like a final piece of a puzzle that didn’t fit.

I stood outside the emergency room, staring through the glass doors as doctors fought to save him.

The man who had protected my grandmother’s secrets.

The man who had protected me.

Almost died because he tried to reveal the truth.

And now I didn’t even know if the truth I had discovered was real.

Vanessa sat nearby.

For once, she wasn’t surrounded by cameras.

No makeup artists.

No assistants.

No people telling her how perfect she looked.

Just a woman sitting alone with her own broken reality.

“You hate me, don’t you?”

Her voice surprised me.

I looked at her.

“What?”

She stared at the floor.

“I spent years making your life miserable.”

Silence.

“I ruined your opportunities.”

She swallowed.

“I tried to take something that belonged to you.”

Her eyes moved toward the necklace in my hand.

“I even destroyed your dress tonight.”

I almost smiled.

Almost.

Because compared to everything else happening...

The dress felt like another lifetime.

“I don’t know what I feel.”

That was the truth.

I didn’t know if I hated Vanessa.

I didn’t know if I forgave her.

I didn’t even know who she was anymore.

My enemy.

My sister.

My family.

All those words had become meaningless.

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

She looked at me.

I continued.

“You spent your whole life believing you were the chosen one.”

A pause.

“Then one night, you discover everything was a lie.”

Her eyes lowered.

“Maybe I do understand.”

The sadness in her voice surprised me.

Because Vanessa Hart finally looked human.

Not the queen of luxury jewelry.

Not the woman everyone admired.

Just Vanessa.

A daughter who spent her life trying to earn love from people who used her.

Before I could respond...

My mother walked toward us.

Isabella.

Twenty years missing.

Twenty years hidden.

The woman I had imagined thousands of times.

But never like this.

She stopped in front of me.

“I need to tell you everything.”

I looked at her.

“Why now?”

The question came out sharper than I intended.

Her eyes filled with pain.

“Because I don’t have another chance.”

I looked away.

“You had twenty years.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“You could have found me.”

“I tried.”

That answer made me look back.

“What?”

Isabella took a deep breath.

“Many times.”

She sat beside me.

“After I disappeared, Victoria monitored everything connected to Hart Jewelry.”

Her voice lowered.

“She controlled the people around you.”

My eyebrows tightened.

“She knew where I was?”

“Yes.”

“And she did nothing?”

Isabella looked away.

“She did something worse.”

A pause.

“She made sure you believed I abandoned you.”

The words hurt.

Even though I knew they were probably true.

“She wanted you to hate me.”

“Why?”

“Because hatred creates distance.”

Isabella looked at the necklace.

“And distance kept you alive.”

I touched the pink diamond.

“Why?”

My mother looked at it carefully.

“Because this necklace is not just evidence.”

She paused.

“It is a key.”

“A key to what?”

She looked toward the hospital.

“Your grandmother’s final plan.”

I felt confused.

“But Mr. Bellamy said…”

I stopped.

The words.

The heir was never supposed to be me.

My mother became silent.

“You heard him.”

“Yes.”

She closed her eyes.

“Then it’s time you know the truth.”

The air changed.

“What truth?”

She looked directly at me.

“You were never meant to inherit Hart Jewelry.”

My heart sank.

“Then why?”

“Because Eleanor knew something.”

“What?”

“That the company itself was already corrupted.”

The words shocked me.

“She didn’t want you to own an empire built on lies.”

I stared.

“Then what did she want?”

My mother reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Worn.

My name was written on it.

“This was supposed to be given to you when you turned twenty-five.”

My hands shook.

“I’m not twenty-five.”

“I know.”

“Then why give it to me now?”

Her eyes moved toward the hospital.

“Because someone tried to kill the person who knew the truth.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was another letter from my grandmother.

The handwriting made my heart ache.

My beloved granddaughter,

I stopped.

If you are reading this early, then something has gone wrong.

My breathing slowed.

I need you to understand something important. The Hart family name is not a gift. It is a responsibility.

I continued.

I did not choose you because you were my blood.

My fingers tightened.

I chose you because you were the only person who never wanted power.

The words hit me.

Vanessa wanted to prove she deserved the crown. Others wanted to steal it. But you wanted only to create beautiful things.

A tear formed in my eye.

That is why you were the only person I trusted.

I turned the page.

And the next sentence changed everything.

But there is something you must know.

Your father Alexander did not disappear because of the Hart family.

I froze.

He disappeared because he discovered who truly created the Hart empire.

My heartbeat increased.

The next line was underlined.

The Hart family was never founded by Eleanor Hart.

I stopped breathing.

What?

The original founder was someone whose name was removed from every record.

A name.

A name I had never heard before.

And below it...

A symbol.

The same symbol engraved inside the pink diamond.

I looked at my mother.

“Do you know this name?”

Her face changed.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Recognition.

She whispered:

“Yes.”

“Who is it?”

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

And said:

“The person who owns Hart Jewelry today.”

My blood turned cold.

“Who?”

My mother’s voice dropped.

“Daniel Cross.”

Everything stopped.

My lawyer.

The man who had betrayed me.

The man who was working with Victoria.

The man who had stolen the original will.

But that made no sense.

Daniel wasn’t a Hart.

He wasn’t family.

Unless...

He was.

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A new message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“Come alone if you want to know why your grandmother chose you.”

Attached was a location.

An abandoned Hart Jewelry workshop.

The original one.

The place where everything began.

Vanessa looked at my phone.

“You’re not actually going there, are you?”

I stared at the message.

Because deep down...

I already knew.

The answers were waiting there.

But so was the person who had spent twenty years hiding them.

I stood up.

“I have to.”

My mother grabbed my hand.

“Don’t go alone.”

I looked at her.

“I spent my whole life alone.”

A pause.

“But tonight…”

I looked at the dark street outside.

“I want to know why.”

And somewhere in Beverly Hills...

Someone was waiting for me.

Someone who knew every secret my family had buried.

Someone who knew the real reason Eleanor Hart chose me.

And someone who was ready to finally tell me...

May you like

Why I was never supposed to exist.

TO BE CONTINUED...
