CHAPTER 9 The Man Who Watched From the Shadows

The message remained on the tablet screen.

Six words.

Yet they felt heavier than every document, every confession, every betrayal Evelyn had discovered that day.

Ask Thomas why he raised my son.

Nobody spoke.

The Hawthorne mansion had never felt so silent.

Not during the wedding.

Not during the arrest.

Not even after Thomas was taken away.

Because now the greatest question wasn't what Thomas had done.

It was why.

Owen stared at the screen.

"My father is alive."

Nobody corrected him.

Nobody told him to calm down.

Because everyone in the room knew.

The impossible had become another piece of reality.

He looked at Evelyn.

"You knew about him."

She lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

The answer hurt more than denial.

Owen stepped back.

"How long?"

"Since before you were born."

His face tightened.

"So my whole life..."

"No."

Evelyn's voice broke.

"Your whole life was real."

"Was it?"

"Yes."

She moved closer.

"I carried you."

"I raised you."

"I loved you."

Tears formed in her eyes.

"That was never a lie."

Owen looked away.

But he didn't leave.

A small sign that somewhere beneath the anger...

He still needed his mother.

Valerie picked up the tablet.

"We need to understand why Alexander contacted us now."

Daniel nodded.

"I traced the message."

"And?"

"It's impossible."

"Explain."

"The message came through three different encrypted servers."

Valerie frowned.

"Can you find him?"

"Not yet."

Daniel paused.

"But someone wanted us to receive it."

Evelyn looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

"He didn't hide the message completely."

"He left a trail."

A cold realization entered the room.

"This wasn't a warning."

Valerie whispered.

"It was an invitation."

Thirty minutes later...

Thomas opened his eyes.

The warehouse was darker now.

The man standing in front of him had received a phone call.

Thomas noticed immediately.

Something had changed.

"You heard from him."

The man turned.

"From who?"

Thomas smiled.

"Don't pretend."

A pause.

"You know exactly who."

The man walked closer.

"You always were too confident."

Thomas laughed.

"And you were always too afraid."

The man's expression hardened.

"You have no idea what you've awakened."

Thomas leaned back.

"Actually..."

He smiled.

"I created it."

Back at Hawthorne Estate...

Evelyn sat in the library holding another letter from Claire.

Her hands shook slightly as she read.

Thomas did not choose you because he loved you.

He chose you because your family controlled access to the Hawthorne Foundation.

She stopped.

The Hawthorne Foundation.

The charity empire Evelyn had spent decades building.

The one she believed represented generosity.

Compassion.

Legacy.

She looked at Valerie.

"What was he trying to access?"

Valerie answered quietly.

"The Phoenix Files."

Evelyn frowned.

"Those files again."

Valerie nodded.

"Your father-in-law created a hidden financial network decades ago."

"Illegal?"

"Yes."

"And Thomas wanted it?"

"No."

Valerie looked at the folder.

"He already had it."

The room went cold.

"What?"

Valerie continued.

"Project Phoenix was never about creating a new empire."

"It was about exposing the old one."

Evelyn looked confused.

"Then why was Thomas involved?"

"Because Thomas wasn't trying to steal the money."

A pause.

"He was trying to erase the evidence."

Daniel stepped closer.

"There is something else."

He placed a small envelope on the table.

"We found this hidden inside Thomas's office."

Evelyn opened it.

Inside was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

At the bottom...

A familiar name.

Alexander Reed.

Owen grabbed the paper.

"Why is my father's name here?"

Daniel pointed.

"Look at the date."

Owen did.

His expression changed.

The payment was made twenty-eight years ago.

Three months before Owen was born.

The description line read:

Termination Agreement.

Nobody spoke.

"What does that mean?"

Owen's voice was barely audible.

Valerie stared at the document.

"It means Thomas paid Alexander Reed."

"For what?"

Valerie didn't answer.

Because she knew.

And she didn't want to say it.

Evelyn looked at her.

"Say it."

Valerie closed her eyes.

"He paid him to disappear."

Owen stepped away.

The room seemed to spin.

"My father sold his own identity?"

"No."

Evelyn whispered.

"He stole it."

At that moment...

The mansion security system activated.

A loud alarm echoed through the halls.

Everyone froze.

Daniel immediately reached for his radio.

"What's happening?"

A guard's voice crackled.

"Movement at the east entrance."

"Who?"

Silence.

Then:

"One person."

Daniel checked the cameras.

The image appeared on the monitor.

A man standing outside the gates.

Older.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

Holding nothing.

No weapon.

No disguise.

Just waiting.

Owen walked toward the screen.

His breathing stopped.

Because he knew.

Somehow...

Without ever meeting him...

He knew.

"That's him."

Everyone looked at him.

"My father."

The gate opened.

Slowly.

The man walked across the driveway.

Every step carried twenty-eight years of secrets.

Evelyn stood at the entrance.

She didn't know what she expected.

A villain?

A victim?

A stranger?

But when the man finally stopped in front of her...

She saw something she hadn't expected.

Pain.

Deep.

Ancient pain.

Alexander Reed looked at Evelyn.

The woman who had raised his son.

The woman who had lived the life he lost.

And quietly said:

"I've waited twenty-eight years to apologize."

Nobody spoke.

Then Owen stepped forward.

His voice trembled.

"Why?"

Alexander looked at him.

The expression on his face broke.

"Because I was told you were dead."

The entire hall went silent.

Evelyn frowned.

"What?"

Alexander looked directly at her.

"Thomas told me you lost the baby."

Owen froze.

"What?"

Alexander continued.

"He told me Evelyn couldn't survive the birth."

"He told me our child died."

Tears filled his eyes.

"And I believed him."

Nobody moved.

The truth crashed into the room.

Not slowly.

Not gently.

All at once.

Evelyn whispered:

"You were alive."

Alexander nodded.

"I was."

"Then why didn't you come back?"

His eyes moved to Thomas's empty chair in the hall.

"Because every time I tried..."

"I was stopped."

"By who?"

Alexander looked at everyone.

Then answered:

"By the man you married."

Before anyone could respond...

Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

"What?"

Valerie immediately noticed.

"What happened?"

Daniel swallowed.

"The federal transport team just contacted us."

"And?"

He looked toward Evelyn.

"Thomas Hawthorne escaped custody."

Silence.

Alexander's expression darkened.

Then he whispered something that made everyone freeze.

"He wasn't escaping."

"He was going after something."

Evelyn frowned.

"What?"

Alexander looked toward the library.

Toward the hidden Project Phoenix files.

"He knows where the final piece is."

A pause.

"And if he gets it..."

"...he won't just destroy the Hawthorne empire."

May you like

"He'll destroy everyone connected to it."
