CHAPTER 11 The Person Behind the Empire

The document remained open on the table.

Nobody wanted to touch it.

Nobody wanted to read the name.

Because everyone in that room understood one thing:

The truth had already destroyed enough lives.

But secrets had a cruel habit.

They never stopped at one victim.

Claire Hawthorne stood beneath the dim library lights.

The woman who had been declared missing for twenty-eight years.

The woman whose disappearance started the chain of events.

She looked older than the photograph.

Of course she did.

Time had passed.

Pain had passed.

But her eyes...

Her eyes were exactly the same.

Sharp.

Determined.

Unbroken.

Evelyn stared at her.

"You were alive this entire time."

Claire nodded.

"Yes."

"Why didn't you come back?"

A long silence.

Then Claire answered:

"Because Thomas wanted me dead."

Valerie looked away.

A mixture of guilt and relief crossed her face.

"You should have told me."

Claire's expression softened.

"I tried."

Valerie looked at her.

"I sent messages."

"I left evidence."

"I created paths back to the family."

Claire shook her head.

"But every path disappeared."

Alexander frowned.

"Thomas."

Claire nodded.

"Thomas."

Owen stared at the woman in front of him.

His entire family history had transformed into something unrecognizable in less than a day.

First Thomas wasn't his father.

Then Alexander was alive.

Now Claire Hawthorne, a woman who had supposedly vanished, was standing in front of him.

He finally spoke.

"Why come back now?"

Claire looked at him.

"Because Thomas made his final move."

"What move?"

She placed the folder on the table.

"The one he thought would guarantee his victory."

Daniel stepped closer.

"What is inside?"

Claire looked at him.

"The original Phoenix Ledger."

Nobody spoke.

Even Valerie looked shocked.

"The original?"

Claire nodded.

"The complete record."

"Every account."

"Every payment."

"Every person involved."

Evelyn looked at the folder.

"And Thomas has it?"

Claire smiled sadly.

"No."

"He thinks he does."

The mansion suddenly shook.

A loud impact came from outside.

Everyone turned.

Daniel immediately checked the dead monitors.

Nothing.

The power was still down.

"That wasn't a security failure."

He looked toward Alexander.

"What was it?"

Alexander's expression became serious.

"Someone is trying to get our attention."

Claire picked up the folder.

"There is something you need to understand."

She looked at Evelyn.

"Thomas never planned to escape."

Evelyn frowned.

"He was taken."

"Yes."

"Then how—"

"He wanted to be taken."

Silence.

Everyone looked confused.

Claire continued.

"The arrest wasn't a failure."

"It was part of his plan."

Alexander's face changed.

"No..."

Claire looked at him.

"You understand now."

Alexander slowly shook his head.

"He wanted access."

"Exactly."

"Federal custody."

"Exactly."

Evelyn frowned.

"Access to what?"

Claire answered:

"To the one place nobody would suspect."

The room went quiet.

"The government evidence facility."

Valerie's eyes widened.

"He wanted the seized documents."

Claire nodded.

"Thomas knew the investigation would collect everything."

"The evidence."

"The financial records."

"The digital backups."

"He knew they would protect it."

A pause.

"So he created a situation where he could be moved there."

Owen whispered:

"Then the escape..."

"Wasn't an escape."

Claire looked at him.

"It was a retrieval."

Daniel immediately pulled out his phone.

Even without the security system, one thing still worked.

His private emergency channel.

He made a call.

"Agent Miller?"

A voice answered.

"Cross?"

"We have a problem."

"What happened?"

"Thomas Hawthorne's transport."

Silence.

Then:

"We know."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

The agent's voice became tense.

"He never reached the facility."

Everyone heard.

"How long ago?"

"Forty minutes."

Valerie looked at Claire.

"Where is he?"

The agent replied:

"We don't know."

Claire slowly opened the Phoenix folder.

Inside was a map.

One location circled in red.

Evelyn leaned closer.

Then she recognized it.

Her face changed.

"No."

Owen noticed.

"Mom?"

She looked at everyone.

"That's..."

Her voice shook.

"That's our old property."

Alexander frowned.

"What property?"

Evelyn stared at the map.

"The Hawthorne family lake house."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew that place.

It had been abandoned twenty years ago.

Too isolated.

Too old.

Too many memories.

Thomas hated it.

Or at least...

That was what everyone believed.

Claire closed the folder.

"Thomas didn't hate that place."

"He hid something there."

At that exact moment...

A security camera outside the mansion flickered back on.

Daniel looked at the screen.

His face went pale.

A video file had appeared.

No sender.

No source.

Only one title.

FOR EVELYN.

He clicked.

The screen showed Thomas.

Sitting somewhere dark.

Alive.

Calm.

Almost smiling.

The video quality was poor.

But his voice was clear.

"Evelyn."

Everyone gathered around the monitor.

Thomas continued.

"If you're watching this..."

"Then Claire finally came home."

Evelyn froze.

Thomas smiled.

"I knew she would."

Claire's expression changed.

The video continued.

"You probably think I lost."

"You think the arrest."

"The affair."

"The money."

"All of it was my downfall."

Thomas leaned closer to the camera.

"It wasn't."

Owen clenched his fists.

"He's insane."

But nobody answered.

Because Thomas didn't sound insane.

He sounded confident.

Too confident.

"I spent twenty-eight years preparing for this moment."

Thomas continued.

"Every lie."

"Every relationship."

"Every sacrifice."

"Everything had a purpose."

He looked directly into the camera.

Then said:

"Evelyn..."

"The reason I chose you was not because of your family money."

She stared.

"What?"

Thomas smiled.

"It was because of your blood."

The room froze.

Evelyn felt the air disappear.

"My blood?"

Thomas continued.

"Your family has been protecting something for generations."

"Something far older than the Hawthorne empire."

Valerie whispered:

"No..."

Thomas smiled wider.

"And Claire knows exactly what I'm talking about."

Everyone turned toward Claire.

Her face had lost all color.

Owen looked at her.

"What is he talking about?"

Claire didn't answer.

Thomas's final words played through the speakers.

"The Phoenix Ledger was never the treasure."

A pause.

"The real secret..."

"...was hidden inside Evelyn's family long before she was born."

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then Owen slowly turned toward his mother.

"Mom..."

His voice trembled.

"What is he talking about?"

Evelyn looked at Valerie.

Valerie looked at Claire.

And Claire finally whispered the sentence that changed everything:

"Your family was never protecting money."

"They were protecting a name."

A name nobody in the room expected.

A name that had disappeared from history.

May you like

A name connected to the beginning of the Hawthorne empire.
