CHAPTER 6 The Arrest Before the Vows

Nobody moved.

Not the guests.

Not the photographers.

Not even the musicians who still held their instruments frozen in their hands.

The wedding had stopped being a ceremony.

It had become a courtroom without walls.

And Thomas Hawthorne was standing in the center of it.

The federal agent walked down the aisle slowly.

Every step echoed against the marble floor.

Thomas stared at the badge.

Then at the envelope.

Then back at Evelyn.

His expression changed from disbelief...

To anger.

"You did this."

Evelyn didn't answer.

"You called them."

Still nothing.

Thomas laughed.

A bitter, almost broken sound.

"After twenty-eight years..."

"You chose to destroy me in front of everyone?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"You destroyed yourself."

The lead agent stopped a few feet away.

"Mr. Hawthorne."

Thomas straightened.

He tried to recover the authority he had used his entire life.

"You have no idea who you're dealing with."

The agent didn't react.

"Actually, we do."

He opened the envelope.

"You are Thomas Alexander Hawthorne."

"Founder and chairman of Hawthorne Global Holdings."

"Owner of multiple international investment firms."

"Primary controller of seventeen offshore entities."

Thomas's jaw tightened.

The agent continued.

"And now..."

"Suspect in a federal investigation involving wire fraud, identity theft, financial conspiracy, and the unlawful transfer of protected family assets."

The chapel erupted.

Guests whispered.

Some stood.

Others backed away.

The billionaire everyone admired was suddenly a suspect.

Thomas looked around desperately.

His eyes searched for allies.

People he had helped.

People who owed him favors.

A senator in the front row looked away.

A longtime business partner pretended to adjust his jacket.

A famous investor quietly slipped toward the exit.

One by one...

The people who had surrounded him for decades disappeared.

Not physically.

But emotionally.

Thomas finally understood something painful.

Power had never created loyalty.

It had only rented attention.

"You're making a mistake."

Thomas lowered his voice.

The agent remained expressionless.

"We hear that often."

"You don't understand the situation."

"We understand enough."

Thomas stepped closer.

"My lawyers will bury you."

The agent almost smiled.

"Your lawyers are already aware."

That stopped him.

"What?"

"They received copies of the evidence this morning."

Thomas froze.

"Impossible."

"No."

The agent looked toward Evelyn.

"Your wife made sure everyone received the same information."

Thomas turned slowly.

"Evelyn..."

For the first time that day...

Fear appeared in his eyes.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

"You planned this."

She looked at the man she had loved for nearly three decades.

"I discovered the truth this morning."

A pause.

"But Valerie discovered the pattern months ago."

Thomas looked at Valerie.

"You."

The older woman stepped forward.

"Me."

"You've been investigating me?"

"No."

Valerie corrected him.

"I've been protecting my family from you."

Marissa suddenly stood.

"Wait!"

Everyone looked at her.

Her face was pale.

The tears on her cheeks had dried.

"Thomas didn't do this alone."

Silence.

Thomas turned sharply.

"What did you say?"

Marissa swallowed.

She looked terrified.

But she continued.

"I didn't know everything."

"You knew enough."

Thomas's voice became dangerous.

Marissa flinched.

"No."

"I knew about the money."

A wave of shock moved through the chapel.

Owen stared at her.

"You knew?"

Marissa looked at him.

"I'm sorry."

His expression broke.

"You knew my father was stealing from us?"

"I thought..."

She struggled.

"I thought he was moving money for an investment."

Owen laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

"You thought?"

"You were planning to leave the country tomorrow."

Her face changed.

She knew.

Someone had told him.

The federal agent looked at Marissa.

"Ms. Collins."

She turned.

"Please do not leave the area."

Her eyes widened.

"Am I under arrest?"

"Not at this moment."

The agent glanced at the evidence displayed on the giant screen.

"But your cooperation will determine what happens next."

Marissa looked terrified.

Thomas looked furious.

"You don't say anything."

Everyone heard him.

The agent immediately turned.

"Interesting."

Thomas realized his mistake.

Too late.

The agent nodded to another officer.

"Make note of that statement."

Outside the chapel...

Reporters had begun gathering.

Someone had leaked information.

Phones were exploding with notifications.

BREAKING: Hawthorne Wedding Interrupted by Federal Investigation

Billionaire CEO Accused of Multi-Million Dollar Fraud

Wedding Ceremony Turns Into Crime Scene

The perfect image was collapsing in real time.

Inside...

Owen remained standing near the altar.

Everyone looked at him.

The abandoned groom.

The betrayed son.

The man whose wedding had become a national scandal.

Evelyn approached him.

"I'm sorry."

He looked at her.

"For what?"

"For today."

His eyes filled.

"I lost everything."

She shook her head.

"No."

She touched his shoulder.

"You lost a lie."

A tear escaped.

"But I lost my family."

"No."

Valerie stepped beside them.

"You found out who was truly in it."

Owen looked at Thomas.

The man who had taught him everything.

How to negotiate.

How to build an empire.

How to win.

Now he understood his father had never taught him the most important lesson.

How to recognize betrayal.

The federal agent approached Thomas.

"Mr. Hawthorne."

Thomas said nothing.

"Turn around."

For a moment...

Everyone expected him to fight.

To scream.

To demand lawyers.

To threaten everyone in the room.

Instead...

Thomas slowly turned around.

The agent placed handcuffs around his wrists.

The click echoed through the chapel.

A sound nobody would ever forget.

The sound of an empire falling.

As Thomas was escorted away, he passed Evelyn.

He stopped.

The agents allowed him one final moment.

His voice was quiet.

"You think you won?"

Evelyn looked at him.

"I stopped you."

"No."

Thomas smiled faintly.

A disturbing smile.

"You stopped what you knew about."

Evelyn's expression changed slightly.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas leaned closer.

"You really think Marissa was the only secret?"

The air changed.

Valerie noticed.

Owen noticed.

Even the agents noticed.

Thomas continued.

"You spent twenty-eight years looking at the surface."

A pause.

"But you never asked why I chose you."

Evelyn stared.

"What are you talking about?"

Thomas smiled.

"You'll find out."

The agents pulled him away.

"Evelyn..."

He looked back one final time.

"Ask Valerie about Project Phoenix."

The words hit like a bullet.

Because Valerie's face changed.

Only for a second.

But Evelyn saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Later that evening...

After the guests had fled.

After the cameras were gone.

After Thomas had been taken away.

Evelyn sat alone in the library.

The mansion was silent.

Almost peaceful.

Almost.

She stared at the folder Valerie had shown her earlier.

PROJECT PHOENIX

She opened it.

The first pages were financial records.

The second pages were company documents.

The third...

Made her stop breathing.

A photograph.

A young woman.

Twenty-five years old.

Standing beside Thomas.

Before Evelyn ever met him.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten note.

Three words.

Your real mother.

Evelyn's fingers went cold.

Because beneath the photograph...

Was another name.

A name she recognized.

A name that changed everything.

May you like

Valerie Hawthorne.
