CHAPTER 14 The Brother Who Owned the Empire

The message remained on the screen.
THOMAS WAS NEVER THE MASTER OF THE PLAN.
HE WAS ONLY THE FIRST PIECE.
Nobody spoke.
The words sat in the darkness like a final warning.
A warning that the nightmare they had spent all day uncovering was not the end.
It was only the beginning.
Valerie slowly sat down.
For the first time since Evelyn had known her...
She looked old.
Not seventy-two years old.
Older.
Like someone carrying a burden that had lasted far too long.
Evelyn noticed.
"You knew."
Valerie didn't answer.
"Valerie."
The older woman closed her eyes.
"I knew about Victor."
Silence.
Owen looked at her.
"You knew Thomas had a brother?"
"Yes."
"And you never told anyone?"
Valerie looked at him.
"Because nobody who knew the truth survived long enough to tell it."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Who was Victor Hawthorne?"
Valerie stared at the fireplace.
"The man who built the empire."
Alexander frowned.
"I thought Thomas's father built it."
Valerie shook her head.
"That is the story everyone was given."
She looked toward the old portraits.
"The truth is much darker."
Decades earlier...
Victor Hawthorne was the eldest son.
The genius.
The strategist.
The man who understood money, influence, and human weakness better than anyone.
Thomas was the younger brother.
The charming one.
The one people liked.
The one who smiled while Victor calculated.
Valerie continued:
"Victor created the system."
"The offshore companies."
"The hidden accounts."
"The network of influence."
"But he didn't want the world to know his name."
"Why?"
"Because power is safer when nobody knows who holds it."
Evelyn looked at the screen.
"So Thomas was just a puppet?"
Valerie nodded.
"At first."
A pause.
"Then Thomas became ambitious."
Alexander understood.
"He wanted the empire for himself."
"Yes."
"That's why Claire disappeared."
Valerie looked at him.
"Yes."
Claire stepped forward.
"Victor didn't want me dead."
Everyone turned.
"He wanted me controlled."
She looked at Evelyn.
"When I discovered what they were building, I tried to expose them."
"Victor stopped me."
"Thomas helped him."
Evelyn's face hardened.
"How?"
Claire looked down.
"He took something from me."
"What?"
"My daughter."
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Claire's eyes moved toward Marissa.
"Thomas didn't just steal Evelyn's child."
"He stole mine."
The room went completely still.
Marissa stared.
"Your..."
Her voice failed.
Claire nodded.
"Before Thomas created this entire plan, before he married Evelyn..."
"He had another secret."
A secret nobody expected.
"Victor had a daughter."
Valerie whispered:
"No..."
Claire looked at her.
"Yes."
Everyone turned toward Marissa.
Marissa stepped backward.
"No."
Claire's expression was filled with pain.
"You were born into a war you never understood."
Marissa shook her head.
"You're saying..."
She couldn't finish.
Claire did.
"You're Victor Hawthorne's granddaughter."
The truth hit the room like an explosion.
Marissa.
The woman who had been introduced as a nobody.
A young woman from an ordinary background.
Was connected to the very family that controlled everything.
Evelyn stared at her.
"Thomas knew?"
Claire nodded.
"He found her."
"He knew exactly who she was."
"And he used her."
Owen looked at Marissa.
His emotions were impossible to read.
Anger.
Pain.
Confusion.
But also something else.
Pity.
Because suddenly he understood.
Everyone had been a piece on Thomas's chessboard.
Including her.
Daniel received another alert.
His expression changed.
"What now?"
He turned the tablet around.
A live location.
Thomas Hawthorne.
Everyone froze.
"Where is he?"
Daniel answered:
"At the lake house."
Alexander immediately stood.
"We have to go."
Valerie shook her head.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
"He wants us there."
Claire nodded.
"Exactly."
Evelyn looked at them.
"Then why go?"
Claire looked at her.
"Because he has something we need."
"What?"
"The final Phoenix document."
The convoy left the Hawthorne Estate forty minutes later.
No wedding.
No celebration.
No guests.
Only survivors chasing the truth.
Evelyn sat in the lead vehicle.
Beside her sat Owen.
Neither spoke.
Too much had happened.
Finally, Owen whispered:
"Mom."
She looked at him.
"Do you regret raising me?"
Her heart broke.
"What?"
"If you knew everything..."
"No."
The answer came instantly.
"I would choose you again."
He looked away.
"I wasn't supposed to be yours."
Evelyn reached over.
"You were always mine."
At the lake house...
Thomas waited.
The old building stood beside the dark water.
The same place where he had spent years hiding secrets.
A vehicle stopped outside.
He looked through the window.
They had arrived.
Thomas smiled.
"Finally."
Inside the lake house...
The group entered carefully.
Daniel led.
Alexander followed.
Claire and Valerie behind him.
Evelyn and Owen stayed together.
The silence was unnatural.
No guards.
No traps.
No resistance.
That worried Daniel more than anything.
"He wants us here."
Alexander nodded.
"He always did."
They found Thomas in the old study.
Sitting behind the same desk where he had made countless decisions.
No handcuffs.
No fear.
Just a glass of whiskey.
Evelyn stared.
"You look comfortable."
Thomas smiled.
"I am."
"You destroyed our family."
"No."
He looked at her.
"I revealed it."
Nobody spoke.
Thomas stood.
"Do you really think I created this?"
He laughed softly.
"I inherited it."
Claire stepped forward.
"Stop pretending."
Thomas looked at her.
"Still alive after all these years."
"Disappointed?"
"No."
Thomas smiled.
"Impressed."
Claire's expression hardened.
"You destroyed everyone."
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
He pointed toward Evelyn.
"She did."
Everyone froze.
Evelyn frowned.
"What?"
Thomas walked toward the desk.
"You still don't understand."
He placed a final document on the table.
The missing piece.
"The Phoenix Ledger wasn't created to protect the Hawthorne empire."
He looked at Evelyn.
"It was created to protect yours."
She stared.
"My what?"
Thomas smiled.
"Your family name."
A pause.
"The one you were never supposed to know."
Evelyn slowly opened the document.
The first page contained a symbol.
The same phoenix.
But beneath it...
A different family name.
Not Hawthorne.
Not Reed.
A name that made Valerie step backward.
A name that made Claire whisper:
"No..."
Because it was the name of the family that started everything.
The family that disappeared from history.
May you like
The family connected to Evelyn's blood.
