CHAPTER 4 The Wedding Began Exactly on Time

The first notes of the wedding march floated through the chapel.

Elegant.

Timeless.

Every guest rose to their feet.

More than four hundred people turned toward the massive oak doors at the back of the chapel.

Television cameras adjusted their focus.

Wedding photographers crouched along the aisle, fingers poised over their shutters.

Social media influencers whispered excitedly.

"This is going to be everywhere."

None of them knew how right they were.

Just not for the reasons they imagined.

Behind the closed doors, Marissa took one final breath.

Her father smiled proudly as he offered his arm.

"You look beautiful."

She forced a smile.

"Thank you, Dad."

He noticed the tremor in her voice.

"Nervous?"

"A little."

"That's normal."

No.

It wasn't normal.

Brides weren't supposed to receive anonymous videos exposing their affair with the groom's father an hour before walking down the aisle.

Brides weren't supposed to wonder whether federal agents were hiding among the guests.

Brides weren't supposed to fear that every smiling face in the chapel already knew the truth.

A wedding coordinator appeared.

"Thirty seconds."

Marissa nodded.

Her father squeezed her hand.

"Everything will be fine."

She wished she believed him.

At the altar, Thomas stood beside Owen.

To every guest, they looked like the perfect father and son.

Thomas rested a reassuring hand on Owen's shoulder.

"You doing alright?"

Owen turned slowly.

Their eyes met.

For just a moment.

Thomas felt something he had never felt from his son before.

Nothing.

No warmth.

No affection.

Only a cold, unreadable stare.

"I'm fine," Owen said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Thomas smiled uneasily.

"Good."

He withdrew his hand.

Somewhere deep inside, a quiet alarm began ringing.

Near the front row, Evelyn took her seat.

She crossed her legs gracefully, her emerald gown catching the afternoon light.

Guests leaned over to greet her.

"Evelyn, congratulations."

"What a beautiful day."

"You must be so proud."

She smiled with flawless composure.

"Thank you."

No one noticed the small wireless remote concealed inside her evening clutch.

Except Valerie.

Sitting two seats away.

She gave the slightest nod.

Everything was ready.

High above the chapel, inside the audiovisual control booth, the mysterious technician adjusted a headset.

A laptop displayed dozens of surveillance files.

Bank statements.

Video clips.

Phone recordings.

Each one carefully labeled.

One folder was highlighted in red.

CEREMONY_SEQUENCE.mp4

The cursor hovered over it.

Waiting.

The wedding planner whispered into her microphone.

"Open the doors."

The enormous oak doors slowly swung inward.

A collective sigh rippled through the chapel.

Marissa appeared.

Bathed in golden afternoon sunlight.

Her gown shimmered like flowing silk.

The cathedral-length veil drifted behind her.

For a brief moment, she looked exactly like the fairy-tale bride everyone expected.

Applause erupted.

Photographers captured hundreds of images.

Flash after flash illuminated the aisle.

Marissa began walking.

Each step felt heavier than the last.

She kept her eyes fixed on Owen.

He wasn't smiling.

She tried to tell herself he was simply emotional.

But something about his expression unsettled her.

He looked...

Resolved.

As though he had already accepted an ending she hadn't yet seen.

Halfway down the aisle, Marissa's phone vibrated inside her bouquet.

She ignored it.

It vibrated again.

And again.

She discreetly glanced downward.

A preview appeared on the screen.

UNKNOWN NUMBER

Last chance.

Her heartbeat doubled.

She nearly stumbled.

Guests assumed she was overwhelmed with emotion.

Several even smiled sympathetically.

Only Thomas noticed the flash of panic across her face.

Their eyes met.

He gave the tiniest shake of his head.

Stay calm.

She swallowed hard and continued walking.

Back in the control booth, the technician spoke quietly into the headset.

"Bride has entered."

A voice replied.

"Stand by."

"What about the investigators?"

"They're ready."

"And Valerie?"

"Waiting for Evelyn's signal."

The technician looked down at the chapel below.

From this height, the guests resembled pieces on a chessboard.

Every player had taken position.

Only the first move remained.

Marissa finally reached the altar.

Her father kissed her cheek.

"Take care of each other."

He stepped away.

The officiant smiled warmly.

"Dearly beloved..."

The ceremony began.

Thomas exhaled.

Maybe...

Maybe they would get through this.

Maybe Evelyn had decided to stay silent.

Maybe the anonymous messages were nothing more than a scare tactic.

Maybe—

The chapel lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then stabilized.

Several guests glanced upward.

The officiant chuckled politely.

"Technology always has its own timing."

Laughter spread through the room.

Thomas forced a smile.

But he noticed Valerie.

She hadn't laughed.

She was watching Evelyn.

Waiting.

The officiant continued.

"We gather here today to celebrate the union of Owen Hawthorne and Marissa Collins..."

Owen never looked away from Marissa.

Neither did Evelyn.

Neither did Thomas.

The tension between the four of them became almost visible.

Like invisible wires pulled tighter with every passing second.

Outside the chapel...

A fourth black SUV quietly entered the estate.

It didn't stop at the guest entrance.

It drove directly toward the service road.

Inside sat three more federal agents.

One of them held a sealed arrest warrant.

Another carried a hard case containing digital forensic equipment.

The senior agent checked his watch.

4:29 PM.

He spoke into his radio.

"Team Bravo is in position."

A reply crackled back.

"Awaiting visual confirmation."

"No action until the signal."

Inside the chapel, the officiant smiled.

"And now..."

"We come to the vows."

He turned toward Owen.

"Would you like to begin?"

The entire chapel fell silent.

Four hundred guests leaned forward.

Owen took a slow breath.

He unfolded a sheet of paper from his jacket pocket.

Marissa smiled nervously.

She expected promises.

She expected poetry.

She expected forgiveness she didn't deserve.

Instead...

Owen looked directly into her eyes and said,

"I spent three years believing I knew the woman standing in front of me."

The smile faded from Marissa's face.

"I believed you loved me."

Thomas shifted uneasily.

The officiant blinked.

This wasn't the script.

"I believed you were becoming part of my family."

A whisper spread through the audience.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Marissa whispered,

"Owen..."

He ignored her.

"But today..."

He slowly folded the paper without reading another word.

"...I learned something."

Thomas felt a chill crawl up his spine.

Evelyn's fingers tightened around the small remote hidden inside her clutch.

Valerie quietly reached for her phone.

High above them, the technician moved the cursor over CEREMONY_SEQUENCE.mp4.

One click.

That was all it would take.

Owen looked from Marissa...

...to his father.

Then calmly asked a question that echoed through the silent chapel.

"Before we continue..."

"Would anyone here like to explain why my father has been sleeping with my fiancée?"

Silence.

Absolute silence.

A champagne glass slipped from someone's hand in the third row.

It shattered against the marble floor.

Every head in the chapel turned toward Thomas.

And before anyone could speak...

May you like

The thirty-foot screen behind the altar suddenly flashed to life.
