Chapter 5: The Invitation From a Billionaire

Lily stared at the man standing outside her apartment.

She remembered him immediately.

He had been at the airport.

The serious man wearing a dark suit who had moved through the crowd like he belonged everywhere.

But unlike the reporters she had seen on television that morning...

He wasn't holding a camera.

He wasn't asking questions.

He wasn't trying to turn her into a story.

He was simply standing there.

Waiting.

"Are you Daniel?" Lily asked.

The man smiled slightly.

"You remember."

"You were with Ethan's father."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Behind Lily, Margaret approached carefully.

Her expression changed the moment she saw the expensive suit.

Years of experience had taught her that people with wealth rarely appeared at doors like theirs without a reason.

"Can I help you?"

Daniel turned respectfully.

"Mrs. Carter?"

Margaret froze.

Almost nobody called her by that name anymore.

She usually heard:

"Grandma."

"Miss Margaret."

"Ma'am."

But not Carter.

Not the name connected to a past she rarely spoke about.

"How do you know my last name?"

Daniel glanced toward Lily.

"Because I know who Emily Carter was."

The room became silent.

Lily looked between them.

"My mom?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Margaret's fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

"Why?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into the brown envelope he carried.

"I think Mr. Harrison should explain this himself."

He handed Margaret a letter.

Not a check.

Not a contract.

A handwritten letter.

Margaret looked at the envelope but didn't open it.

"We don't need money."

Daniel's expression softened.

"I know."

That surprised her.

Most wealthy people who entered their apartment always assumed money was the answer.

"But this isn't about money."

"It's about a promise."

One hour later, Richard Harrison arrived.

Not with bodyguards.

Not with cameras.

Not with assistants.

Just him.

A father.

A man carrying a debt that had waited twenty-three years to be repaid.

When Lily opened the door again and saw him standing there, her eyes widened.

"Mr. Harrison."

Richard smiled.

"Hi, Lily."

She looked behind him.

"No reporters?"

He shook his head.

"No reporters."

"No cameras?"

"No cameras."

Lily nodded.

"Good."

Richard almost laughed.

"Why is that good?"

"Because Ethan is not a story."

Richard paused.

The sentence struck him.

A seven-year-old girl understood something many adults forgot.

People weren't headlines.

They weren't entertainment.

They were lives.

"You are right," Richard said quietly.

"Ethan is not a story."

"He is my son."

They sat together in the small apartment.

Richard looked around.

He noticed everything.

The repaired curtains.

The old furniture.

The stack of library books beside Lily's bed.

The handwritten emergency notes taped near the kitchen.

This wasn't poverty created by carelessness.

This was survival built through love.

Lily poured water into glasses for everyone.

Richard accepted one.

A billionaire drinking water from a chipped glass in a tiny apartment would have seemed impossible to most people.

But somehow...

It felt exactly right.

"I want to tell you something about your mother."

Lily immediately became still.

Nobody talked about Emily often.

Not because they didn't love her.

Because they loved her too much.

Richard took the old photograph from his folder.

He placed it on the table.

Lily picked it up.

Her eyes widened.

"Where did you get this?"

"I found it while searching for you."

She touched her mother's face.

"She looks happy."

Richard smiled.

"She was."

"You knew her?"

"Yes."

Lily looked up.

"How?"

Richard took a deep breath.

"Your mother saved my life."

Margaret closed her eyes.

She already suspected.

But hearing it aloud was different.

"When I was young..."

Richard explained everything.

The river.

The accident.

The rescue.

Emily refusing to leave him.

How she disappeared before he could thank her.

Lily listened silently.

When he finished, she looked down at the photograph.

"Mom saved people before she got sick."

Richard nodded.

"She did."

"She always said..."

Lily smiled faintly.

"Everyone knows how to be kind when it's easy."

"But real kindness is when you're scared and you still help."

Richard felt a painful warmth in his chest.

Those were exactly the words Lily had lived by.

After several minutes of silence, Richard spoke.

"I want to help you."

Margaret immediately looked up.

"Richard."

He stopped.

The warning in her voice was clear.

"I don't mean charity."

"I know what you're thinking."

"Then what do you mean?"

Richard looked at Lily.

"I mean opportunity."

Lily tilted her head.

"What's the difference?"

Richard smiled.

"Charity says, 'You need me because you can't do something.'"

"Opportunity says, 'You already have something special. Let me help you go further.'"

Lily thought about that.

Then asked,

"What kind of help?"

Richard answered honestly.

"Anything you need."

"School."

"Medical care."

"Your home."

"Your future."

Margaret looked away.

The offer was generous.

But accepting it felt dangerous.

People with power always came with expectations.

"What do you want in return?"

Richard looked surprised.

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"Nothing."

Margaret studied his face.

She had lived long enough to recognize when someone was lying.

Richard wasn't.

He genuinely wanted to help.

Not because Lily was useful.

Not because she had saved his son's life.

Because he had discovered a connection to a woman who once saved him.

Before leaving, Richard knelt beside Lily.

"Ethan wants to see you."

Lily smiled.

"Is he okay?"

"He's recovering."

"Can I visit him?"

Richard nodded.

"I think he'd like that."

Lily picked up her backpack.

Then stopped.

"Mr. Harrison?"

"Yes?"

"Can I bring Captain Bolt a new sticker?"

Richard laughed softly.

"Ethan's robot?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because he went through something scary too."

Richard smiled.

"Of course you can."

That night, something unexpected happened.

Richard's security team noticed a vehicle parked outside Lily's apartment.

At first, they assumed it was a reporter.

But when they checked the license plate...

Their expressions changed.

The vehicle belonged to a private investigation company.

One that had no connection to the media.

Richard received the call at 11:43 PM.

"Sir."

"We found something concerning."

Richard sat up immediately.

"What?"

"The moment your investigation into Lily Carter became active..."

"Someone else started searching for her too."

Richard's face hardened.

"Who?"

The security officer hesitated.

"We don't know yet."

"But whoever they are..."

"They already know who Lily is."

Richard looked out the window of his penthouse apartment.

For the first time since the airport incident...

His gratitude turned into concern.

Because saving Ethan's life had brought Lily into the spotlight.

And now...

Someone else was looking for the little girl with the purple backpack.

Someone who knew secrets about Emily Carter.

Secrets that had remained hidden for six years.

Richard picked up the phone.

"Protect her."

"Immediately."

The officer paused.

"Sir, should we inform the police?"

Richard looked at the photograph of Emily sitting on his desk.

Then at the small piece of blue yarn he had kept in his wallet.

"No."

"Not yet."

"First..."

May you like

"I need to know who is coming for her."
