Chapter 14: The Truth About Lily Carter

The safe house was hidden in a forgotten corner of Boston.

No signs.

No cameras.

No records.

Only an old brick building surrounded by empty warehouses and abandoned streets.

The kind of place people passed every day without noticing.

Richard arrived with Daniel just before sunrise.

He had barely slept.

Not because he was tired.

Because every answer he found created three more questions.

His father.

Emily.

Jonathan.

Victor.

And now...

Lily.

Daniel parked the car a block away.

"We need to be careful."

Richard looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because if Jonathan has been hiding Emily for six years, he knows how to disappear."

Richard nodded.

"But Emily is there."

"Yes."

"And she's alive."

"Yes."

Richard opened the door.

"Then I'm going in."

Daniel grabbed his arm.

"Richard."

He stopped.

"Don't forget."

"What?"

"Emily warned you about herself."

Richard looked toward the building.

"I know."

"Then why are you going?"

Richard answered quietly.

"Because twenty-three years ago, she saved my life."

A pause.

"And six years ago, she lost everything."

"I need to know why."

Inside the building, the hallway was dark.

The walls were covered with old peeling paint.

The air smelled like dust and old paper.

Daniel moved carefully.

Then they heard something.

A voice.

A woman's voice.

"Richard."

He froze.

That voice.

Even after decades.

Even after believing she was gone.

He knew it.

Emily stepped into the doorway.

For a moment...

Neither of them moved.

Richard had imagined this moment thousands of times.

He imagined anger.

Questions.

Pain.

But when he actually saw her...

All he felt was grief.

Emily looked older.

Of course she did.

Six years had passed.

Her brown hair had strands of gray.

Her face carried exhaustion.

But her eyes were exactly the same.

The same eyes that had looked at him while he was drowning.

The same eyes that had looked at frightened children and promised they would be okay.

"Richard..."

Her voice broke.

"I am sorry."

Richard stared.

"You let me think you were dead."

Emily lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

"You let Lily think she lost her mother."

A tear moved down her cheek.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Emily looked at him.

"Because if I stayed..."

"She would have died too."

The words silenced the room.

Richard stepped closer.

"Explain."

Emily took a deep breath.

"Victor wasn't just after the research."

"He was after the person who could prove it belonged to me."

"Me."

Richard frowned.

"Your signature?"

Emily nodded.

"But not only that."

She looked toward the table.

A small file sat there.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Richard noticed immediately.

His expression changed.

"What is that?"

Emily hesitated.

"Something I never wanted Lily to know this way."

Richard opened the file.

He looked at the paper.

Then froze.

Because the information inside was impossible.

Child: Lily Carter

Mother: Emily Carter

Father: Unknown

Richard looked up.

"Unknown?"

Emily's face became painful.

"That was intentional."

"Why?"

"Because her father was connected to Project Breathless."

Richard stared.

"Who?"

Emily didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Richard already knew.

The silence gave him the answer.

"No..."

Emily closed her eyes.

"Yes."

Richard stepped backward.

"Jonathan Vale?"

Emily nodded.

For several seconds, Richard couldn't speak.

Lily.

The little girl with the purple backpack.

The child who had saved Ethan.

The child who carried Emily's kindness.

Was connected to Jonathan Vale.

The same man who helped steal her mother's research.

The same man who disappeared after Emily's death.

"The man hunting her..."

Richard whispered.

"Is her father."

Emily nodded.

"But Lily doesn't know."

"She never knew."

Richard looked angry.

"Why didn't you tell her?"

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"Because a child should not grow up believing she is responsible for the sins of adults."

Daniel stepped forward.

"What happened between you and Jonathan?"

Emily looked away.

"At first..."

"He was different."

"He believed in helping people."

"He believed medicine could change the world."

Richard listened carefully.

"Then what happened?"

"Power."

Emily's voice became quiet.

"He stopped seeing children as people."

"He started seeing them as data."

"He believed if enough information was collected, he could control every disease."

Daniel nodded.

"Project Breathless."

Emily looked at him.

"Yes."

"But he needed my work."

"Because I refused to sell it."

Richard walked toward the window.

The truth was painful.

But it finally made sense.

Jonathan wasn't just an enemy.

He was someone who had once loved Emily.

Someone who knew her better than anyone.

Someone who knew exactly how to hurt her.

"Why is he helping you now?"

Emily's expression changed.

"He's not."

Richard turned.

"What?"

"Jonathan isn't protecting me."

"He's hiding me."

"Why?"

Emily looked at him.

"Because Victor betrayed him."

The room became silent.

Emily continued.

"Jonathan thought Victor would help him build Project Breathless."

"But Victor wanted complete control."

"He planned to remove Jonathan once he had everything."

Richard frowned.

"So they turned against each other."

"Yes."

"And now Jonathan needs you."

Emily nodded.

"Because I have the original research."

"Because I am the only person who can expose them."

Richard looked at Emily.

"Then why tell me to protect Lily from you?"

Emily's face changed.

This was the question she feared.

"Because Lily has something."

Richard frowned.

"What?"

"Something I gave her."

"I don't understand."

Emily looked toward the door.

"Her backpack."

Richard remembered.

The faded purple backpack.

The one held together by safety pins.

"What's inside?"

Emily whispered:

"The final piece of Project Breathless."

Richard felt his heart drop.

"The backpack?"

Emily nodded.

"When I disappeared, I couldn't take anything obvious."

"I knew they would search my house."

"My computer."

"My files."

"But nobody would search a child's backpack."

Richard remembered Lily carrying it everywhere.

The worn fabric.

The broken zipper.

The patches.

All this time...

It had been hiding the most valuable secret in the world.

Suddenly...

A sound came from outside.

Footsteps.

Multiple people.

Daniel immediately moved toward the window.

"We have company."

Emily's face went pale.

"Victor."

Richard looked at her.

"How do you know?"

"Because he always comes when he thinks he has won."

The door downstairs crashed open.

Voices echoed through the building.

Richard looked at Emily.

"What do we do?"

Emily looked toward him.

And for the first time in six years...

She looked hopeful.

"We do what I should have done years ago."

"What?"

She took his hand.

"We stop running."

Minutes later, the building was surrounded.

Victor Hale entered first.

Behind him were armed security personnel.

He looked almost disappointed.

"Richard."

"I hoped you would understand eventually."

Richard stepped forward.

"You used Emily."

Victor smiled.

"No."

"I learned from her."

Emily's expression hardened.

"You learned nothing."

Victor looked at her.

"You always believed kindness was enough."

"It wasn't."

Richard stood between them.

"You threatened a child."

Victor looked at him.

"No."

"I protected a discovery."

Richard's voice became cold.

"Her name is Lily."

Victor smiled slightly.

"And that's exactly why she matters."

Then Victor revealed something that made everyone freeze.

He held up a tablet.

On the screen was live footage.

A camera inside the Harrison guest apartment.

Lily.

Sleeping peacefully.

Richard's blood turned cold.

"You have been watching her."

Victor smiled.

"Of course."

"And now..."

He looked directly at Richard.

"Bring me the backpack."

Richard's face hardened.

"No."

Victor sighed.

"Then you leave me no choice."

The screen changed.

A second image appeared.

Someone standing outside the apartment.

Margaret.

Captured.

Richard felt his heart drop.

Victor spoke calmly.

"Choose."

"The research."

"Or the people Emily loved."

Richard looked at Emily.

Then at Daniel.

Then at the screen showing Lily.

And he realized something.

Victor believed he had finally won.

But he had made one mistake.

He underestimated the one thing Emily Carter had passed to her daughter.
