Chapter 12: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The document remained on Richard Harrison's desk.
He had stared at it for nearly ten minutes.
A single signature.
A single name.
A single impossible truth.
Emily Carter.
The ownership transfer of Project Breathless had been approved six months after her death.
Richard slowly looked at Daniel.
"You're telling me someone forged Emily's signature?"
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
"And nobody noticed?"
"They did."
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Then why was it accepted?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Because whoever did this had access."
"Access to what?"
"Emily's records."
"Her legal documents."
"Her medical files."
Richard stood.
"And someone inside the system helped them."
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
They both understood.
This wasn't a random theft.
This was organized.
Someone had spent years carefully erasing Emily Carter's work while keeping her research alive under another name.
Richard returned to the hospital room where Lily and Ethan were playing.
The sight almost broke him.
Two children laughing.
Completely unaware of the battle surrounding them.
Ethan held up a drawing.
"Look!"
Richard forced a smile.
"What did you draw?"
"It's Captain Bolt saving Lily."
Richard looked at the paper.
A tiny robot stood in front of a girl wearing a purple backpack.
Behind them was a giant heart.
"Why is the robot saving Lily?"
Ethan looked confused.
"Because she saved me."
Richard smiled.
Children understood fairness in ways adults often complicated.
Someone helped you.
You helped them.
The world was simple.
Until adults added greed.
That evening, Richard asked Margaret to meet him privately.
She immediately knew something was wrong.
"What did you find?"
Richard placed the ownership document on the table.
Margaret read it.
Her face changed.
"Where did you get this?"
"It doesn't matter."
"It does."
"Why?"
Because Emily spent years trying to prevent exactly this.
Richard leaned forward.
"Prevent what?"
Margaret looked toward Lily's room.
Then lowered her voice.
"Someone replacing her."
Richard froze.
"What?"
"Emily knew someone might try to use her name."
"Her identity."
"Her work."
Richard felt anger rising.
"Who?"
Margaret shook her head.
"I don't know."
"But Emily did."
"She left clues."
Richard remembered the notebook.
The hidden room.
The key.
"What clues?"
Margaret stood.
She walked toward an old suitcase.
One Richard had seen many times.
She opened it.
Inside were simple things.
Old clothes.
Photographs.
Letters.
A child's blanket.
Then she removed a small envelope.
"I promised Emily I would only open this if Lily was in danger."
Richard stared.
"Why now?"
Margaret looked at him.
"Because she is."
Inside the envelope was a letter.
This time, Emily's handwriting was different.
More rushed.
More frightened.
Margaret,
If you are reading this, then they found the research.
Do not trust anyone who claims they are helping.
Do not trust anyone who says they knew me.
Richard read the words silently.
Then:
The person who betrayed me is someone I trusted.
His heartbeat increased.
The letter continued.
They will try to take Lily because she is the last connection to the original work.
But Lily is not the key.
Richard stopped.
Not the key?
Then what was?
The next line answered.
The key is the person who taught her.
Richard looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Margaret whispered:
"Your father."
Richard felt like the ground moved beneath him.
"My father?"
Emily had hidden something connected to Thomas Harrison.
Victor Hale wanted the research.
Jonathan Vale was involved.
His father knew the truth.
And now Emily's final message pointed back to him.
"Why would my father be the key?"
Margaret looked at the letter.
"Because Emily didn't trust technology."
"She trusted people."
"Your father was the only person who understood what she was trying to protect."
At that moment, Daniel rushed into the room.
"Richard."
Something in his voice made everyone turn.
"What happened?"
Daniel looked toward Lily's bedroom.
"Someone accessed the hospital database."
Richard stood immediately.
"Which database?"
"The patient archive."
Margaret's face went pale.
"Emily?"
Daniel nodded.
"Someone searched for her records."
Richard's expression hardened.
"Who?"
Daniel handed him a tablet.
A security image appeared.
A woman sitting at a hospital computer.
Richard stared.
The woman looked familiar.
Very familiar.
"Who is that?"
Daniel swallowed.
"We don't know."
Richard zoomed in.
The woman turned slightly toward the camera.
And Richard's blood ran cold.
Because the woman had the same brown hair.
The same eyes.
The same face shape.
As the photograph of Emily Carter.
"No."
Richard whispered.
"Impossible."
Daniel looked at him.
"Richard?"
Richard couldn't look away.
"That's Emily."
Nobody spoke.
Because they all knew the impossible truth.
Emily Carter had died six years ago.
There was a death certificate.
A funeral.
A grave.
A grieving daughter.
But the woman in the image...
Looked alive.
They rushed to the hospital security office.
The footage had been recorded only twenty minutes earlier.
The woman entered the archive room.
Used an employee badge.
Accessed Emily's files.
Then left.
No panic.
No hiding.
Almost like she wanted to be seen.
Richard watched the footage again.
And again.
Then he noticed something.
The woman wasn't alone.
A second person appeared in the reflection of the glass door.
A man.
Standing behind her.
Richard froze.
"Stop."
Daniel paused the video.
Richard pointed.
"Zoom there."
The image sharpened.
The man's face became clearer.
Richard felt his stomach drop.
Because he recognized him.
Not from the past.
From yesterday.
From the hidden room.
From the photographs.
From every secret connected to Emily.
Jonathan Vale.
Daniel looked at Richard.
"That's impossible."
Richard shook his head slowly.
"No."
"It's not impossible."
His voice became quiet.
"It's worse."
"Why?"
Richard stared at the screen.
"Because Jonathan Vale disappeared six years ago."
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Richard looked at the woman who looked exactly like Emily.
Then at Jonathan.
"He didn't disappear."
"He was hiding."
That night, Richard couldn't sleep.
Too many questions.
Too many impossible answers.
At 3:12 AM...
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Then he answered.
A woman's voice spoke.
Soft.
Tired.
Familiar.
"Richard."
His entire body froze.
He knew that voice.
Even after twenty-three years.
Even after believing she was gone.
"Emily?"
A long silence.
Then:
"Please listen carefully."
Richard couldn't speak.
The woman continued.
"I don't have much time."
"Victor knows you found the files."
"Jonathan knows too."
Richard whispered:
"Where are you?"
Another pause.
Then the words that changed everything.
"I was never dead."
Richard stood frozen.
The world around him disappeared.
"Emily..."
"I'm sorry."
"Why?"
"Because I couldn't tell you the truth."
"Because I couldn't protect Lily myself."
Her voice cracked.
"But now you have to."
Richard's grip tightened around the phone.
"Protect her from what?"
The answer came quietly.
From the woman who was supposed to be dead.
"From me."
The call ended.
Richard stared at the phone.
Because for the first time...
The greatest mystery was no longer who wanted Lily.
May you like
It was why Emily Carter had spent six years pretending she was gone.
