Chapter 11: The Betrayal Buried in the Harrison Name

The video froze.

Emily Carter's face remained on the screen.

A woman who had spent her entire life protecting others.

A woman who had trusted Richard's father.

A woman who had left behind one final warning.

Your father wasn't helping me hide the research.

He was helping me hide the person who stole it.

Richard didn't move.

The office felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

For the first time in years, the world he had built around himself began to crack.

Not because of an enemy.

Not because of a competitor.

Because of a question he never thought he would have to ask.

Who had his father been protecting?

Daniel watched Richard carefully.

"Do you want me to continue?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

His eyes stayed fixed on the screen.

"My father..."

His voice was barely audible.

"He spent his whole life teaching me honesty."

Daniel remained silent.

Richard looked up.

"If he knew someone stole that research..."

"Why would he hide them?"

Daniel folded his arms.

"Maybe he wasn't hiding the person."

"Maybe he was hiding the reason."

Richard frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel pointed at the frozen video.

"Emily said someone stole the research."

"Not destroyed it."

"Not leaked it."

"Stole it."

Richard understood.

"She believed someone took it for a reason."

"Yes."

"And my father knew who."

Daniel nodded.

The investigation changed immediately.

Richard ordered Daniel to dig into every person connected to his father.

Not business associates.

Not employees.

Personal relationships.

People who had been close enough to know secrets.

Within hours, Daniel uncovered something unexpected.

A name.

A name Richard hadn't heard in decades.

Jonathan Vale.

Richard stared at the file.

"No."

Daniel looked at him.

"You know him?"

Richard slowly sat down.

"Everyone knew him."

Jonathan Vale had been Richard's father's closest friend.

They grew up together.

Worked together.

Shared everything.

When Richard was young, Jonathan was the man who brought him birthday gifts when his father couldn't afford them.

The man who taught him how to repair old machines.

The man Richard called "Uncle Jon."

After Thomas Harrison died, Jonathan disappeared.

No goodbye.

No explanation.

Just gone.

Richard had always assumed life had taken him away.

But now...

He wasn't sure.

"Where is he?"

Daniel looked at the report.

"That's the strange part."

"What?"

"He doesn't officially exist anymore."

Richard frowned.

"Everyone exists."

"Not if someone spends enough money making sure they don't."

Daniel turned the laptop around.

"Jonathan Vale changed his identity twice."

"Moved through three countries."

"And six years ago..."

Richard already knew.

"The same year Emily died."

Daniel nodded.

Meanwhile, Lily was sitting beside Ethan in the hospital garden.

They had become unlikely friends.

Two children from completely different worlds.

One born into incredible wealth.

One raised with almost nothing.

Yet both understood something adults often forgot.

Kindness didn't care about money.

Ethan rolled his wheelchair slowly along the path.

"Do you think your mom was scared?"

Lily looked at him.

"My mom?"

"When she helped people."

Lily thought for a moment.

"Probably."

Ethan looked surprised.

"But she still did it."

Lily smiled.

"That's what brave means."

Ethan looked down.

"Sometimes I'm scared."

"Of what?"

"That I'll stop breathing again."

Lily became quiet.

Then she reached into her backpack.

She pulled out a small paper robot.

She had drawn it herself.

"This is Captain Bolt's brother."

Ethan laughed.

"He has a brother?"

"Yes."

"His name is Guardian."

"Why?"

"Because he reminds people they aren't alone."

Ethan smiled.

"Can I keep him?"

Lily nodded.

"Of course."

That evening, Richard returned to the hospital.

He watched Lily and Ethan from a distance.

For years, he had believed success meant controlling everything.

Numbers.

Companies.

Markets.

People.

But now he understood something.

The things that mattered most in life were the things you couldn't control.

Love.

Trust.

Time.

Family.

Later that night, Richard finally confronted the hardest question.

He called his aunt, Clara Harrison.

His father's younger sister.

The last living member of the Harrison family who knew Thomas before his death.

She answered after several rings.

"Richard?"

Her voice sounded surprised.

"I haven't heard from you in years."

"I need to ask you something."

A pause.

"What happened to my father?"

Silence.

Too long.

Richard noticed immediately.

"You know something."

Clara sighed.

"Richard..."

"Please."

Another silence.

Then:

"Your father wasn't the man you thought he was."

Richard felt the words hit him.

"What does that mean?"

"It means he carried secrets."

"Everyone does."

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"Your father carried guilt."

Richard gripped the phone.

"About Emily?"

Clara went silent.

That was the answer.

"How did you know about her?"

Richard asked.

Clara whispered:

"Because your father came home the night before he died."

"He was terrified."

Richard's chest tightened.

"My father?"

"Yes."

"What did he say?"

Clara's voice became softer.

"He said..."

"I made a promise to a woman who trusted me."

"And now my son will inherit the consequences."

Richard closed his eyes.

A cold feeling moved through him.

"My father knew he was going to die?"

"No."

"He knew someone was watching him."

The next morning...

Daniel arrived with another discovery.

This time, his expression was different.

Not concern.

Fear.

Richard immediately noticed.

"What happened?"

Daniel placed a folder down.

"We found Jonathan Vale."

Richard opened it.

A photograph.

An address.

A current identity.

Richard looked at the picture.

Then froze.

Because Jonathan Vale wasn't hiding.

He wasn't living under another name.

He wasn't running.

He was working openly.

At one of America's most respected medical foundations.

And standing beside him in every recent photograph...

Was Dr. Victor Hale.

Richard looked up.

"They worked together."

Daniel nodded.

"For years."

"Victor Hale wasn't the only one involved."

Richard stared at the documents.

Two men.

One secret.

One stolen discovery.

And one little girl caught in the middle.

Then Daniel revealed the final piece.

"We found the original ownership documents for Emily's research."

Richard looked confused.

"Ownership?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"The research wasn't owned by Northbridge."

"Or the hospital."

"Or Victor Hale."

Richard waited.

Daniel placed one final page in front of him.

At the bottom was a signature.

A name.

A name that changed everything.

Founder and legal owner of Project Breathless: Emily Carter.

Richard looked at the document.

Then Daniel spoke quietly.

"But there is one problem."

Richard looked up.

"What?"

Daniel pointed to the date.

"The ownership transfer happened after Emily died."

Richard frowned.

"That's impossible."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

"The person who signed it..."

"Was someone pretending to be Emily."

Richard stared.

Because that meant Emily's death wasn't the end of the mystery.

It was the beginning.

And somewhere...

May you like

Someone had been pretending to be a dead woman for six years.
