Chapter 13: The Mother Who Hid From the World

Richard Harrison did not move for several seconds after the call ended.

The phone remained pressed against his ear.

The screen had already gone dark.

But his mind was still trapped in those final words.

"Protect her from me."

Emily Carter was alive.

The woman who had saved his life twenty-three years ago.

The woman whose daughter had saved his son.

The woman everyone believed was dead.

Alive.

And warning him not to trust her.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

Daniel, who had been standing nearby, immediately noticed his expression.

"What happened?"

Richard looked at him.

His voice was barely audible.

"Emily called."

The room froze.

Daniel stared.

"Emily Carter?"

Richard nodded.

"She's alive."

For the first time in his career, Daniel Brooks had no immediate response.

He had investigated murders.

Corporate conspiracies.

Political scandals.

People disappearing and reappearing under different names.

But this was different.

A dead woman had just called them.

"Are you certain it was her?"

Richard looked offended.

"I know her voice."

"After twenty-three years?"

"Some people leave a mark."

Daniel understood.

There were memories that time couldn't erase.

They immediately began tracing the call.

But whoever Emily was, she had planned carefully.

The signal bounced through multiple locations.

Old servers.

Temporary networks.

Encrypted channels.

Daniel stared at his screen.

"She's not trying to hide from us."

Richard frowned.

"What?"

"She's showing us she can hide."

A warning.

Not an escape.

Richard understood.

Emily wasn't running from them.

She was trying to prove something.

The next morning, Richard gathered everyone.

Daniel.

Margaret.

And Lily.

But he didn't tell Lily everything.

Not yet.

Children deserved truth.

But they also deserved protection from burdens too heavy for their shoulders.

Instead, he simply said:

"We found something about your mother."

Lily immediately looked up.

"Good?"

Richard hesitated.

"Complicated."

Lily thought for a moment.

"Like when a puzzle piece fits, but the picture is different?"

Richard smiled sadly.

"Exactly."

She nodded.

"I can handle complicated."

That sentence surprised him.

Because she sounded exactly like Emily.

Later that day, Richard and Daniel followed the first clue Emily left behind.

A location.

A small abandoned community clinic outside Boston.

The building had been closed for years.

The paint was peeling.

The windows were covered.

The sign above the entrance was almost impossible to read.

Carter Children's Respiratory Center

Richard stopped.

"Emily built this?"

Daniel checked the records.

"She founded it."

"Before Project Breathless?"

"Yes."

Richard looked at the building.

A small place.

Nothing like the massive hospitals connected to billion-dollar research.

This was personal.

Inside, dust covered the furniture.

Old children's drawings still decorated the walls.

A rocket ship.

A smiling sun.

A little girl holding a balloon.

Richard walked slowly through the hallway.

Emily had spent time here.

Real time.

Not as a researcher.

As someone who cared.

On the wall near the reception desk was a message written by children.

Thank you, Emily.

You taught us we are stronger than our lungs.

Richard touched the words gently.

"This was her dream."

Daniel nodded.

"Not a company."

"Not a product."

"A place."

They searched every room.

Nothing.

No files.

No computers.

No hidden documents.

Then Richard noticed something.

A small wooden bookshelf.

One book was placed upside down.

He pulled it out.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Inside:

A small memory card.

And a handwritten note.

For the person who remembers the river.

Richard froze.

Only one person could understand that.

Emily.

He inserted the memory card into a laptop.

A video appeared.

Emily.

Not the woman from the hospital camera.

Not the mysterious caller.

The Emily from years ago.

Smiling.

Alive.

Speaking directly to him.

"Richard."

"If you're watching this..."

"Then I failed to keep my promise."

Richard felt his throat tighten.

Emily continued.

"I wanted to tell you the truth."

"But every person I trusted became a target."

"Your father."

"Margaret."

"Lily."

"And you."

She paused.

"I know you are angry."

"You have every right to be."

Richard stared silently.

"I let you believe I was dead."

"I let you think I abandoned my daughter."

Tears appeared in her eyes.

"But I didn't leave because I wanted to."

"I left because someone needed me to disappear."

The video showed documents.

Research papers.

Medical records.

A list of names.

At the top:

Project Breathless Original Team

Emily Carter.

Thomas Harrison.

Jonathan Vale.

Victor Hale.

Richard stared.

Four names.

Two betrayed.

Two dangerous.

Emily continued.

"Victor was never the only problem."

Richard leaned closer.

"Jonathan..."

Emily's voice became heavier.

"He was the first person to discover the research's value."

"He believed it could change the world."

"And he was right."

"But then he decided the world needed to pay him for it."

The video continued.

Jonathan had secretly copied the research.

Victor helped commercialize it.

But someone else had uncovered their plan.

Thomas Harrison.

Richard's father.

Thomas tried to expose them.

Emily helped him.

But they were too late.

"The night your father died..."

Emily whispered.

"He wasn't having a normal heart attack."

Richard went completely still.

Daniel looked at him.

"What?"

Emily continued.

"Someone poisoned him."

Silence.

Richard felt numb.

His father's death.

The pain he had carried for decades.

A lie.

Emily looked directly into the camera.

"Richard..."

"I'm sorry."

"Your father died protecting you."

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

For a long time.

Then Richard whispered:

"Who killed my father?"

Daniel looked at the files.

"We need to find out."

But Richard already knew one thing.

The past was no longer buried.

It was standing in front of him.

That night, Lily found Richard sitting alone.

She climbed onto the chair beside him.

"You're sad."

Richard looked surprised.

"How do you know?"

"Your eyes."

He smiled slightly.

"Your mother said that?"

Lily nodded.

"She said people can hide words."

"But they can't hide feelings."

Richard looked away.

"Your mother was very wise."

Lily was quiet.

Then asked:

"Did you find her?"

Richard froze.

Children sometimes asked the questions adults feared.

"What makes you think that?"

"Because you look like someone who found something and lost something at the same time."

Richard looked at her.

For a moment, he saw Emily.

Not the memory.

Not the photograph.

The person.

"I think I found a part of her."

Lily smiled sadly.

"I knew she wasn't really gone."

Richard looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because I feel like she still helps me."

At midnight, Daniel called.

His voice was urgent.

"Richard."

"We found Emily."

Richard stood immediately.

"Where?"

"At an old safe house."

"Is she okay?"

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

"Yes."

"But there is a problem."

Richard waited.

"She wasn't alone."

"Who was with her?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"Jonathan Vale."

Richard closed his eyes.

The two people connected to Emily's disappearance.

Together.

Alive.

Hidden.

Then Daniel added one more thing.

"Richard..."

"Emily wasn't hiding from Victor."

"She was hiding from Jonathan."

Richard looked toward Lily's room.

The little girl who had changed all their lives.

And suddenly everything became clear.

The danger was never only about stolen research.

It was about a man who knew Emily's greatest secret.

A secret even Richard had not discovered.

May you like

A secret involving Lily's birth.
