Chapter 7 - What My Mother Really WantedEvelyn didn't point the gun at me.

She pointed it toward the ceiling.
That was somehow worse.
"Sit down."
Harris had stayed outside.
Nathan was beside me.
Neither moved.
"Where is Lily?"
"Safe."
"Bring her here."
"No."
Evelyn smiled.
"You still think this is about money."
I stared at her.
"Isn't it?"
"No."
She lowered the gun.
"It's about your father."
The warehouse became silent.
"What did Dad do?"
"He betrayed me."
I almost laughed.
"My father died."
"Because of me."
Nathan's face changed.
He knew.
I looked at him.
"What does she mean?"
Evelyn spoke.
"Your father discovered I had forged documents years ago."
"Forged what?"
"The family trust."
She stared at me.
"I was supposed to inherit everything."
"But Dad changed it."
"He found out."
She had wanted the property.
The money.
The influence.
The family name.
But my father had transferred control to me.
"When?"
"Three weeks before he died."
I stared.
"And you killed him?"
Her eyes filled with anger.
"I didn't."
"Then who?"
She hesitated.
"Daniel."
My brother.
I couldn't breathe.
"He was nineteen."
"He was already capable of doing what needed to be done."
I stepped backward.
"What did he do?"
"He didn't kill your father directly."
"Then what?"
"He helped cover the truth."
Evelyn's voice cracked.
"Your father was poisoned."
The world seemed to tilt.
"What poison?"
"The same class of chemical found on your wife."
I looked at the gun.
Then at my mother.
"You've been doing this for years."
"No."
She shook her head.
"This started six years ago."
"Why Clara?"
"Because Clara found out."
"Found out what?"
"That your father left another secret."
The second deed.
I looked at Nathan.
"Where is it?"
He shook his head.
"I don't know."
Evelyn smiled.
"Yes, you do."
I realized what she meant.
She believed Nathan had it.
The gun moved toward him.
Suddenly the warehouse lights went off.
A gunshot cracked.
Nathan fell.
I screamed.
Then red emergency lights came on.
Evelyn was gone.
Nathan was alive.
The bullet had struck the wall beside his shoulder.
On the concrete was a message written in black paint.
THE DEED IS INSIDE THE DOLL.

I looked down.
Miss Button was still in my hands.
