Chapter 5 - The Dead SecretaryHer name was Margaret Vale.

My father had trusted her more than almost anyone.
She had disappeared three days before his death.
The official story was that she had resigned and moved away.
Nathan knew better.
"There was no resignation letter."
"Then why did Dad say she left?"
"He never did."
I stared at him.
"What?"
Nathan lowered his voice.
"Your father asked me to investigate her disappearance."
"When?"
"Two weeks before he died."
I felt my skin crawl.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because your father told me not to."
"Why?"
"Because he believed someone in the family was watching him."
We looked at each other.
My mother.
Daniel.
I wanted to reject the idea.
But every piece fit too perfectly.
The developer.
The trust.
The account transfers.
The fake video.
The custody plan.
Lily's disappearance.
All of it traced back to one thing.
Control.
Nathan pulled an old file from his bag.
"My father kept copies of everything," I said.
"Your father did."
He opened the file.
Inside was a photograph.
Margaret stood beside my father.
Behind them was the same house I had grown up in.
Only the lawn looked different.
And there was another person in the photograph.
A young Daniel.
I frowned.
"Daniel was twelve."
"Yes."
"Why would he be there?"
Nathan pointed to the bottom corner.
A handwritten note.
PROPERTY AGREEMENT.
Then Nathan showed me another page.
My father had written:
If anything happens to me, Michael must never sell without seeing the second deed.
I stared at the words.
"The second deed."
Nathan nodded.
"We never found it."
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?"
A distorted voice spoke.
"Stop looking."
"Where's my daughter?"
No answer.
"Where is Lily?"
The voice whispered:
"Ask your mother what happened in the basement."
The call ended.
I immediately went home with police escort.
The house was sealed.
The basement door was locked.
Evelyn's keys had been confiscated.
We broke the lock.
The basement smelled of dust, chemicals, and damp concrete.
There were shelves everywhere.
Boxes.
Old photographs.
Storage bins.
Then I saw a wooden cabinet.
Inside were dozens of files.
Each one had a name.
Neighbors.
Employees.
Doctors.
Teachers.
Clara.
Lily.
Me.
My hands shook.
My entire family had been watched.
Then I opened one final folder.
The label read:
MICHAEL WARD - CONTINGENCY PLAN.
Inside was a document signed by Evelyn.
And beneath her signature was another name.
Daniel Ward.
The plan described exactly what had happened.
Claim wife unstable.
Restrict food.
Create medical evidence.
Trigger custody proceedings.
Force property sale.
At the bottom was one final line.
Phase Four: Remove the child.
I dropped the folder.
Because someone had crossed out "Phase Four."
May you like
And written beneath it:
COMPLETED.
