Chapter 3 - The Woman in the VideoI watched the video three times.

Each time, Clara turned toward the camera.
Each time, my stomach twisted.
"That can't be right."
The detective didn't answer.
Nathan stepped closer.
"Do you have the original?"
"Yes."
"Then we need forensic verification."
The detective nodded.
"We're not saying your wife did it."
"But it looks like she did."
"Yes."
I walked into Clara's room.
She was awake.
I held the tablet in front of her.
The video played.
Clara watched herself carrying the container.
Her expression changed.
She didn't look surprised.
She looked devastated.
"I knew it," she whispered.
"Knew what?"
She closed her eyes.
"That they had made me look guilty."
"Who?"
"My mother-in-law."
My voice became quiet.
"And Daniel."
She reached for my hand.
"Michael, listen carefully."
I leaned closer.
"Your mother didn't just want me gone."
"What did she want?"
"Your house."
I blinked.
"What?"
"She discovered the land beneath it is worth far more than you think."
I shook my head.
"The house isn't worth eighty-four thousand."
"No."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"The land is."
I waited.
"Years ago, your father bought surrounding parcels through different names. Your mother has been trying to consolidate them."
"Why?"
"Because a development company wants the entire block."
Nathan walked into the room.
"That's what I was afraid of."
He placed documents on the table.
"The developer offered your family a substantial amount."
"How much?"
"Enough to change your family's life."
I looked at Clara.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
She started crying.
"I found the documents by accident."
"What documents?"
"Your father's old trust."
Then she whispered the sentence that changed everything.
"Your father left you controlling interest in the entire property."
I stared at her.
"My father died six years ago."
"I know."
"And he never said anything."
"Because the trust was sealed."
Nathan opened the folder.
There was a copy of the original trust.
My name was highlighted.
I owned the property.
More importantly, I controlled an easement that blocked the proposed development.
Without my signature, the project could not proceed.
I felt sick.
"So they needed me to sell."
Clara nodded.
"Your mother tried persuasion first."
"And when that failed?"
"She started making me look unstable."
I remembered Daniel's words.
Temporary custody.
Unfit mother.
It suddenly made sense.
Clara continued.
"They wanted Lily taken away."
"Why?"
"Because they believed you'd sign anything to keep your daughter."
Silence.
Then I noticed something.
"The video."
Clara looked at me.
"You said they made you look guilty."
She nodded.
"That night, Evelyn came into our room."
"What happened?"
"She said if I didn't sign a medical declaration claiming I was mentally unstable, Lily would be taken from me."
I clenched my fists.
"What did you do?"
"I refused."
She looked toward the window.
"So she threatened Lily."
My blood turned cold.
"What exactly did she say?"
Clara looked at me.
"She said..."
Her voice broke.
"She said accidents happen when mothers become difficult."
Before I could respond, the lights in the hospital hallway went out.
The entire floor went dark.
A scream came from the nurses' station.
Then another sound.
A child's monitor flatlining.
May you like
Lily's room.
I ran.
