Chapter 13 - The RecordingEverything happened at once.

Harris raised his weapon.
Evelyn pulled Clara closer.
Mr. Gray moved toward the wall.
Daniel appeared behind him.
Alive.
Bleeding.
Holding a gun.
"Mother."
Evelyn stared at him.
"You survived?"
Daniel nodded.
"You should have finished the job."
His face twisted.
"I've spent six years cleaning up your sins."
"You were grateful."
"I was afraid."
Evelyn laughed.
Then Miss Button began playing.
A child's voice filled the basement.
Lily.
"Grandma says Daddy shouldn't know."
Everyone froze.
Another voice.
Evelyn.
"Your father betrayed this family."
Lily giggled nervously.
Then Evelyn's voice came again.
"One day, Michael will sign."
A man's voice.
Mr. Gray.
"And the wife?"
Evelyn answered.
"Make her look unstable."
My blood turned cold.
Then came the final recording.
Lily whispered:
"Grandma, what happened to Grandpa?"
Silence.
Then Evelyn said:
"He went to sleep."
The child's voice:
"Why was there blood?"
The recording stopped.
Evelyn's face drained of color.
Harris looked at her.
"That's enough."
Evelyn fired.
Daniel tackled her arm.
The shot struck the ceiling.
Clara fell.
I pulled Lily behind me.
Mr. Gray lunged.
Harris fired once.
Mr. Gray collapsed.
Evelyn tried to run.
Daniel grabbed her.
For a second, mother and son stared at one another.
Then Daniel whispered:
"It's over."
Evelyn looked at him.
"You were always weak."
He let her go.
Police arrested her.
The basement fell silent.
But the recording continued.
A hidden final track.
My father's voice.
"Michael, there is one more thing."
I pressed play.
"I know Evelyn believes she controls Daniel."
A pause.
"She is wrong."
Then my father said the words that changed everything.
"Daniel has been protecting you."
I looked at my brother.
He lowered his eyes.
I understood.
The expensive watch.
The hidden recordings.
The strange warnings.
Daniel hadn't been helping Mother.
Not entirely.
He had been documenting her.
May you like
For years.
And he had been waiting for me to come home.
