Chapter 9 - THE MAN BEHIND THE WALLPeter Langford looked at Margaret as though no time had passed.

She touched his face.
Her fingers trembled.
“You're alive.”
“I am.”
“I buried you in my mind.”
“I know.”
“Why didn't you come back?”
Peter looked at Daniel.
“Because your son found me.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I promised I would.”
Peter nodded.
“You kept your word.”
I stared at him.
“How did you survive?”
Peter answered quietly.
“Richard never intended to kill me.”
“What did he intend?”
“To make me disappear.”
He explained.
After discovering the money laundering network, Peter had copied the records.
Richard threatened him.
Peter went into hiding.
He changed his name.
Moved states.
Worked ordinary jobs.
Married once.
Lost that marriage.
And spent decades looking over his shoulder.
“Why now?”
Peter looked toward Vanessa.
“Because my granddaughter is involved.”
Vanessa stopped breathing.
“Granddaughter?”
Peter turned to her.
“I am your grandfather.”
She stumbled backward.
“But my mother said…”
“Your mother was frightened.”
“Is she alive?”
Peter looked down.
“No.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Richard had told her for years that her mother abandoned her.
Now she learned it was a lie.
Peter opened the metal box.
Inside was a second ledger.
Smaller.
Older.
More detailed.
“Your father is not the mastermind,” Peter said.
I frowned.
“Richard?”
“He is dangerous.”
“Then who?”
Peter looked at me.
“Your father.”
I froze again.
“But he's dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then how?”
Peter handed me a document.
It was a letter dated two months before Arthur Whitmore died.
I read it.
Arthur admitted everything.
He had helped Richard create the network.
He had used his position to move money.
Then he became afraid.
He tried to leave.
Richard threatened me.
Peter.
Margaret.
Everyone.
Then Arthur made one final decision.
He created a second trust.
A hidden trust.
Protected from Richard.
The beneficiary was not me.
Not Margaret.
Not Daniel.
Vanessa.
I looked up.
“Why her?”
Peter answered.
“Because Arthur knew Richard would never suspect he had left anything to his own enemy's daughter.”
Vanessa was crying.
Daniel looked stunned.
“So the marriage…”
“Was never about the money alone.”
Peter shook his head.
“It was about controlling the beneficiary.”
I looked at Vanessa.
“Your father wanted you to inherit.”
“No.”
Peter's expression hardened.
“He wanted you to sign it over.”
A sound came from outside.
Car tires.
Fast.
The police rushed through the corridor.
“Everyone inside!”
Peter grabbed the ledger.
Richard had returned.
And this time, he wasn't alone.
The estate's gates slammed shut.
The security system activated.
The entire property was locked down.
Peter looked at me.
“He knows we found the real ledger.”
Daniel whispered:
“What does he want?”
Peter answered:
“You.”
I stared.
“Me?”
Peter nodded.
“Because Arthur left one final signature.”
“What signature?”
Peter placed a document in my hand.
At the bottom was a clause.
I read it twice.
Then felt my blood run cold.
In the event of my death, Thomas Whitmore shall become temporary trustee.
I looked at Peter.
“And?”
He pointed to the final line.
“Temporary lasts until the truth is publicly disclosed.”
I looked toward the locked gates.
Richard was outside.
He had us trapped.
May you like
But Peter smiled for the first time.
“Now he can't afford to let you leave alive.”
