Chapter 13 - THE LAST PAGEThe fire inside the safe room exploded upward.

Daniel lunged toward Michael.

I pulled Margaret back.

Michael fired.

The bullet struck the wall.

Police shouted from the corridor.

Michael ran.

Daniel chased him.

I grabbed the burning papers.

Most were destroyed.

But one page remained.

One page.

It was enough.

I looked at the handwriting.

It was Arthur's.

Richard Caldwell was never the final beneficiary.

Below it:

The person intended to control the trust is Michael Whitmore.

My cousin.

The quiet accountant.

The man who had spent years appearing harmless.

I understood everything.

Richard had been the visible threat.

Vanessa had been the pawn.

Daniel had been trying to expose the operation.

But Michael had been sitting behind the curtain.

Using Richard.

Using Vanessa.

Using Peter's fear.

Using my family's trust.

The money had never been the real prize.

Control had been.

I ran upstairs.

Police had Michael pinned near the ballroom.

Richard appeared from the smoke.

For one second, the three men looked at one another.

Then Richard pointed toward Michael.

“You.”

Michael laughed.

“You were supposed to finish it.”

Richard's face changed.

“You betrayed me.”

“No.”

Michael smiled.

“I outgrew you.”

Vanessa arrived behind the police.

“You're both liars.”

Richard looked at her.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand everything.”

She held up a phone.

“You remember the security recording?”

Richard froze.

“It uploaded automatically.”

Daniel appeared beside her.

“Three copies.”

Michael looked at him.

“You little…”

Daniel interrupted.

“Everything you said is already with federal investigators.”

Michael lowered his gun.

Then he smiled.

“Not everything.”

He looked at me.

“You still have the trust.”

I held up Arthur's last page.

“No.”

I looked at the police chief.

“We have the chain of evidence.”

Michael laughed.

“Evidence burns.”

Margaret spoke.

“Not when people remember.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She held the pearl bracelet.

The one she had given Vanessa.

The pearls were stained with mud.

“I gave this to Vanessa because I thought family meant forgiving people before they deserved it.”

She looked at Richard.

“I was wrong.”

Then she looked at Vanessa.

“But forgiveness isn't the same as surrender.”

Vanessa began crying.

Margaret stepped toward her.

“You were wrong too.”

“I know.”

“You hurt me.”

“I know.”

“But you were afraid.”

Vanessa nodded.

Margaret reached out.

Vanessa hesitated.

Then took her hand.

The ballroom was silent.

Outside, the fire was being contained.

The crisis should have been ending.

Then Daniel looked at me.

“Dad.”

“What?”

He pointed toward the final page.

There was something on the back.

A handwritten note.

I turned it over.

Three words.

ASK ABOUT THOMAS.

My stomach dropped.

“What's that?”

Peter stepped forward.

He looked at the note.

Then at me.

“I know.”

“Know what?”

Peter swallowed.

“Your father didn't just help Richard.”

“What did he do?”

Peter looked at Margaret.

She shook her head.

“No.”

Peter continued.

“Arthur was the one who arranged my disappearance.”

I stared at him.

“But you said Richard threatened him.”

“He did.”

“Then why?”

Peter looked directly at me.

“Because Arthur believed I knew what he had done to someone else.”

“Who?”

Peter's voice dropped.

“Your mother.”

I froze.

“My mother?”

Peter nodded.

“Richard wasn't the only man who protected that secret.”

“Then who was?”

Peter looked behind me.

At the burned doorway.

At the room where Michael had been standing.

May you like

Then back at me.

“Your father.”
