Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO NEVER DIEDThe emergency lights flickered on.

Richard was gone.

So was Vanessa.

The police ran up the stairs.

Daniel stayed with Margaret.

I could not move.

“Peter,” Margaret whispered.

I nodded.

“It was him.”

“But where?”

Daniel pointed upward.

“Somewhere in the house.”

We searched every room.

Nothing.

Then Daniel stopped outside the old library.

“There.”

A speaker was hidden behind a painting.

He removed it.

A recording device sat behind the wall.

Peter's voice played again.

“This message is for Margaret.”

She stood perfectly still.

“I know what Richard did.”

The recording continued.

“I know what Arthur Whitmore did.”

My heart stopped.

“Arthur?”

Peter spoke again.

“Your husband is innocent.”

I let out a breath I had not realized I was holding.

“But his father was not.”

Margaret looked at me.

I stared at the wall.

Peter continued.

“Arthur helped Richard move money through shell companies.”

I shook my head.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The recording answered as though Peter could hear me.

“Because Richard threatened his family.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Dad…”

Peter continued.

“Arthur discovered the money wasn't being used for construction.”

“It was being used to buy silence.”

He listed names.

Judges.

Business owners.

Officials.

Bank officers.

Then he said one thing that changed everything.

“Briarwood was where they kept the records.”

I looked around the estate.

“The basement.”

“Yes.”

“But someone found them before you.”

Peter's voice became quieter.

“Your mother was the only person I trusted.”

Margaret whispered:

“I failed you.”

“No.”

The recording paused.

“You survived.”

Then Peter said something else.

“The real ledger isn't the book they found tonight.”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“The real ledger is hidden in the wedding.”

I looked at him.

“The wedding?”

Peter continued.

“Vanessa knows where.”

We found her ten minutes later.

She was in the chapel.

Alone.

Still wearing her wedding dress.

She held something in her hand.

A small brass key.

Daniel approached slowly.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at him.

“Did you know?”

He nodded.

“About Peter?”

“Yes.”

“Before today?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he was my father?”

“I suspected.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you would have gone after him.”

“And?”

“He asked me not to.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You always decide what's best for everyone.”

Daniel stopped.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“You were trying to control the damage.”

I looked at her.

“What is the key?”

She stared at me.

“The truth.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where is the real ledger?”

Vanessa looked at the wedding altar.

“Under the floor.”

I froze.

The floorboards.

I looked down.

The chapel had been built onto the oldest part of Briarwood.

Margaret suddenly remembered something.

“Peter once told me the house had a room no one could find.”

“Where?”

She pointed.

“Under the altar.”

Daniel found a seam.

He pried the board upward.

A narrow compartment appeared.

Inside was a metal box.

Vanessa began to cry.

“That was supposed to be my wedding gift.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Richard promised me he would give it to me after the ceremony.”

She shook her head.

“He said if I married Daniel, everything would finally belong to our family.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You knew what he wanted.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you marry me?”

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because my father told me if I didn't, he'd destroy the only person I had left.”

“Who?”

“My brother.”

The room went silent.

She whispered:

“He has been missing for three years.”

I looked toward Richard's office.

“Where is your brother now?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I don't know.”

Then someone knocked on the chapel door.

Three slow knocks.

Margaret gasped.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

The door opened.

An old man stood there.

Gray hair.

Thin face.

A scar across his jaw.

Margaret collapsed against me.

“Peter.”

He looked at her.

May you like

And said:

“I'm sorry it took me twenty-five years to come home.”
