Chapter 7 - THE ROOM BENEATH THE HOUSEThe basement door was behind a false pantry wall.

I had visited Briarwood Estate dozens of times.

I had never known it was there.

Daniel found the hidden latch.

When the panel opened, a narrow staircase descended into darkness.

The air smelled damp.

Old.

Metallic.

Richard did not follow.

Neither did Vanessa.

That told me more than words ever could.

Daniel grabbed a flashlight.

I followed.

“Stay behind me.”

“You're not seventeen anymore.”

He almost smiled.

“Neither are you.”

We descended.

At the bottom was a concrete corridor.

A camera blinked red from the ceiling.

Daniel looked at it.

“Someone installed this recently.”

We moved forward.

At the end of the corridor was a steel door.

Locked.

Daniel tried the handle.

Nothing.

Then Margaret spoke behind us.

“Try Peter's name.”

We turned.

She had followed us.

“Mom, you can't be down here.”

“I've already spent twenty-five years being afraid of this room.”

She stepped forward.

“I'm not spending another twenty-five.”

Daniel typed something into the keypad.

He entered the date from the ledger.

Nothing.

Margaret whispered:

“Peter's birthday.”

Daniel tried it.

The lock clicked.

The door opened.

Inside were shelves.

Boxes.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Bank records.

A wall covered with names.

I stared.

Every person listed had some connection to Richard.

But then I saw something that made my knees weak.

My own name was there.

And below it:

SUBJECT MARRIED MARGARET LANGFORD.

I looked at Margaret.

“What is this?”

She looked devastated.

“I don't know.”

Daniel moved toward another wall.

There were photographs.

Peter.

Richard.

My father.

Margaret.

And a fourth person.

A young woman.

I did not recognize her.

Vanessa did.

She gasped from the doorway.

“No.”

Daniel spun around.

“You know her.”

Vanessa backed away.

“That's impossible.”

“Who is she?”

Vanessa stared at the photo.

“My mother.”

Richard appeared behind her.

His voice was low.

“Your mother was never supposed to be in that picture.”

Vanessa turned.

“You lied to me.”

“I protected you.”

“From what?”

“From the truth.”

Daniel looked between them.

“What truth?”

Richard said nothing.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“My mother was supposed to marry someone else.”

“Who?”

Peter Langford.

Silence.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Vanessa looked at her.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You knew my mother.”

“I knew Peter.”

“You knew everything.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I did not know you were his daughter.”

The room seemed to collapse inward.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You're Peter's daughter?”

She began crying.

Richard stepped forward.

“She doesn't know what she is.”

Daniel moved toward her.

“Vanessa.”

She shoved him away.

“You knew!”

“I knew your father was alive.”

Everyone froze.

Margaret stared at him.

“What did you say?”

Daniel's eyes dropped.

“I found him six months ago.”

My blood turned cold.

“You found Peter?”

Daniel nodded.

“He's alive.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

I could barely speak.

“Where?”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“With a new identity.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard didn't kill him.”

He paused.

“Peter ran.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at the ledger.

“Because he knew the truth would destroy everyone involved.”

Richard suddenly pulled something from his coat.

A gun.

The police officer shouted.

“DROP IT!”

Richard turned.

Not toward the officer.

Toward the ledger.

And before anyone could react, he fired.

The bullet struck the shelf beside my head.

Boxes exploded onto the floor.

Margaret screamed.

Daniel grabbed her.

The lights went out.

Then a voice came through the basement speakers.

A man's voice.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

“Richard.”

Everyone froze.

The voice said:

“You were never supposed to find the ledger.”

Daniel whispered:

“Dad…”

But the voice continued.

“Tell Margaret I am sorry.”

Margaret began shaking.

May you like

She knew that voice.

Peter Langford was speaking from somewhere inside Briarwood Estate.
