Chapter 4 - THE SIGNATURE THAT WASN'T MINEI read the authorization three times.

My name was there.

My signature was there.

The date was tomorrow.

I looked at Daniel.

“You're telling me someone forged my signature.”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“To transfer control of the trust.”

My first instinct was denial.

Our family had lawyers.

Accountants.

Safeguards.

There was no way someone could simply forge a signature and take control of anything.

Daniel seemed to know exactly what I was thinking.

“By itself, the signature isn't enough.”

“Then why are you worried?”

“Because they don't plan to submit it alone.”

He pulled out another document.

Marriage property agreement.

I scanned it.

Then stopped.

There was a clause buried in the middle.

If Daniel entered marriage under specified conditions, certain assets could be transferred to a jointly controlled entity.

I looked at him.

“Did you sign this?”

“No.”

“Vanessa?”

“I refused.”

“Then why is it here?”

“Because someone expects me to sign it tomorrow.”

I stared toward the estate.

The reception was still happening.

People were whispering.

Some guests had left.

Others were pretending nothing was wrong.

That was the strangest thing about wealthy gatherings.

People could watch a disaster unfold while holding champagne and discussing the weather.

“Where is Vanessa?”

“Inside.”

“Richard?”

“Talking to the police.”

I closed the folder.

“Why didn't you cancel the wedding?”

Daniel looked away.

“Because every time I tried, Vanessa found a way to stop me.”

“How?”

“She said she'd release private messages.”

“What private messages?”

“She had spent months collecting screenshots.”

“Of you?”

“Of everyone.”

Daniel looked at me.

“She was building leverage.”

I suddenly remembered the comments Vanessa had made about Margaret.

Her questions.

What banks we used.

Which lawyer handled the trust.

Whether Margaret had a will.

Where original documents were stored.

At the time, they had seemed like awkward curiosity.

Now they felt like fingerprints.

“We have to leave.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard is waiting for you to panic.”

“What happens if I don't?”

“He'll make the next move.”

“And if he does?”

“Then we catch him.”

A voice spoke behind us.

“Catch who?”

I turned.

Vanessa stood beside the car.

Her wedding veil had been removed.

Her makeup was still perfect.

But her eyes were different.

Hard.

Cold.

She looked at Daniel.

“You told him.”

Daniel didn't answer.

She turned to me.

“You've been manipulated.”

“By whom?”

“Your son.”

I almost laughed.

“You pushed my wife.”

“I was angry.”

“That doesn't explain the smile.”

Her eyes flickered.

“It was an accident.”

“You laughed.”

“People laugh when they're nervous.”

“You laughed twice.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Do you know what your son has done?”

“No.”

“He accessed my private accounts.”

Daniel spoke.

“You gave me access.”

“I trusted you.”

“You were tracking my mother.”

Vanessa's expression changed.

“I was trying to protect this family.”

“Which family?”

She stared at him.

Neither spoke.

Then Richard appeared.

“Vanessa.”

She looked over.

Richard's face was tight.

“We're leaving.”

“No.”

I stepped forward.

“You're not going anywhere.”

Two security guards moved between us.

Richard's voice became polite.

“Thomas, let's not make this ugly.”

“It became ugly when your daughter pushed my wife.”

“And now you're accusing my family of fraud.”

“I've seen the documents.”

He smiled.

“What documents?”

I held up the red folder.

For the first time, Richard looked genuinely afraid.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“You don't understand what you've started.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“I understand exactly.”

Richard lowered his voice.

“You should ask your mother what happened twenty-five years ago.”

I turned.

Margaret had just reached the parking lot.

She heard him.

Her face went completely white.

“Richard…”

The folder nearly slipped from my hands.

“You know him?”

Margaret stared at Richard.

“I've known him longer than you think.”

Daniel's expression changed.

“Mom?”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Then she whispered something that made my entire body go still.

“Thomas, there is a reason I never told you about my first marriage.”

I stared at her.

“First marriage?”

She looked at Daniel.

Then at the red folder.

May you like

And finally at me.

“Because Richard Caldwell was there the night my first husband disappeared.”
