Chapter 5: The Death That Was Never an Accident

The voice disappeared.

But Claire couldn’t move.

She remained frozen beneath the hospital lights, staring at the ceiling speaker as if her mother’s words were still hanging there.

“You need to know the truth about your father.”

For twenty years, Claire had carried one story in her mind.

Her father died in a car accident.

That was what her mother told her.

That was what everyone told her.

A rainy night.

A dangerous road.

A vehicle that lost control.

A tragic accident.

Claire had been six years old.

Too young to question anything.

Too young to understand that adults sometimes built entire worlds out of lies.

But now, after everything she had uncovered…

She couldn’t ignore the question anymore.

What if her father’s death had never been an accident?

Daniel watched her carefully.

“Claire.”

She didn’t answer.

“Claire, sit down.”

Slowly, she lowered herself onto the hospital bed.

Her injured arm throbbed.

But she barely felt it.

Pain from the body was simple.

It had a location.

A cause.

A beginning.

Pain from betrayal was different.

It lived everywhere.

“What did my mother mean?” Claire whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Then Daniel’s phone vibrated.

A new message.

He checked it.

His expression changed.

“What?”

Claire looked at him.

Daniel hesitated.

“It’s from your mother.”

“She has my number?”

“No.”

He showed the screen.

Unknown sender.

The message contained a location.

An old address.

Daniel frowned.

“Do you recognize this place?”

Claire looked.

The moment she saw the address, her breathing stopped.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Claire looked at the screen.

“My father’s old office.”

Two hours later, Claire, Daniel, and Laura Bennett arrived at the abandoned building.

It stood on the edge of the city.

Forgotten.

Empty.

The kind of place people passed without noticing.

But Claire knew this building.

She remembered coming here once as a child.

Her father had lifted her into his arms and spun her around.

He had laughed.

He had promised:

“Someday, I’ll take you everywhere.”

That was the last happy memory she had of him.

Before the accident.

Before Ethan.

Before everything changed.

The building door was unlocked.

Daniel immediately became cautious.

“Someone wanted us to come here.”

Claire nodded.

“I know.”

“Then we assume it’s a trap.”

Claire looked inside.

“Everything has been a trap.”

She stepped forward.

“But this time, we know it.”

The inside was covered in dust.

Old desks.

Broken chairs.

Papers scattered across the floor.

Daniel searched the rooms while Laura stayed close to Claire.

After several minutes, Claire noticed something strange.

A photograph.

On the wall.

She walked closer.

It showed her father standing with three people.

One was her mother.

One was Ethan.

And one was Deputy Marcus Vale.

Claire felt sick.

“They knew each other.”

Daniel walked over.

He stared at the photograph.

“This changes everything.”

Claire looked at him.

“How?”

“Your father wasn’t just a random victim.”

Daniel pointed at Ethan.

“He was connected to this entire network.”

They searched deeper.

Behind an old cabinet, they found a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small metal box.

No lock.

No dust.

Someone had opened it recently.

Daniel put on gloves.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Letters.

And one cassette tape.

Claire stared at it.

“A tape?”

Laura looked shocked.

“Your father used those.”

Daniel found an old player in the room.

Miraculously, it still worked.

He inserted the tape.

Static filled the room.

Then a man’s voice appeared.

Claire stopped breathing.

Her father.

“Rebecca…”

The voice was older.

Tired.

Afraid.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened to me.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Her eyes filled instantly.

She had not heard that voice in twenty years.

Her father continued.

“I discovered what Ethan is doing.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

Everyone became silent.

“He isn’t just involved in illegal business.”

A pause.

“He is collecting information on powerful people.”

Claire listened carefully.

“He blackmails them.”

The tape continued.

“Politicians. Police officers. Judges. Business leaders.”

Daniel looked at Laura.

The network.

Exactly what they suspected.

Her father knew.

“He doesn’t control them with money.”

The voice trembled.

“He controls them with fear.”

A sound appeared.

Like someone entering the room where he recorded the message.

Claire’s heart raced.

Her father lowered his voice.

“If anything happens to me, Rebecca knows where the real evidence is.”

Then came the sentence that destroyed everything.

“But I don’t know if I can trust her anymore.”

The tape stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Claire slowly turned toward Laura.

“My mother knew.”

Laura looked devastated.

“Yes.”

“She knew my father was in danger.”

“Yes.”

“She knew Ethan was dangerous.”

“Yes.”

Claire’s voice cracked.

“Then why did she stay?”

Laura had tears in her eyes.

“Because Ethan threatened you.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

“He told her if she left him, you would disappear.”

The room became silent.

“He told her he had people everywhere.”

Laura continued.

“He told her nobody would find you.”

Claire looked away.

For the first time, the story became more complicated.

Her mother had betrayed her.

But maybe she had also been trapped.

Both things could be true.

And somehow, that hurt more.

Suddenly, Daniel noticed something.

A small red light.

Blinking.

Inside the old office.

“A camera.”

Everyone turned.

Another hidden device.

Daniel approached.

The screen activated.

Ethan appeared again.

Older.

Calm.

Smiling.

“Claire.”

She stepped forward.

“What do you want?”

Ethan smiled.

“You’re asking the wrong question.”

“Then what should I ask?”

He leaned closer to the camera.

“Ask why your father trusted me.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

Ethan continued.

“Your father wasn’t trying to destroy me.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Then what?”

Ethan smiled.

“He was working with me.”

Nobody moved.

Claire stared.

“No.”

Ethan laughed quietly.

“You really believe I killed him?”

The screen flickered.

“Your father died because he tried to betray everyone.”

Claire felt her anger rise.

“You’re lying.”

“Maybe.”

Ethan looked directly into the camera.

“But ask your mother.”

The screen changed.

A second video appeared.

Rebecca.

Claire’s mother.

She was younger.

Standing in the same office.

Talking to someone.

Claire stepped closer.

Then she heard the words.

Words that changed everything.

Rebecca said:

“I’ll do whatever it takes.”

The video continued.

A man’s voice asked:

“Even if it means losing your daughter?”

Rebecca looked down.

And after a long silence…

She answered.

“Yes.”

Claire felt the world tilt.

Daniel immediately looked at her.

“Claire…”

But she couldn’t hear him.

Because the woman in the video was her mother.

The woman who was supposed to protect her.

The woman who had claimed she was innocent.

Had just admitted something impossible.

She chose.

She chose the plan.

She chose the lie.

She chose Ethan.

The video ended.

Then one final message appeared.

“Now you know why your mother called you unstable.”

Claire stared.

Her entire life.

Her memories.

Her childhood.

Everything.

A carefully designed story.

And somewhere inside that story was the answer.

Why her father died.

Why her mother betrayed her.

And why Ethan Cross was still afraid of one thing.

May you like

The truth.
