Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Badge

The rain continued falling over the city long after midnight.

From the window of the private hospital room, Claire watched the streets below.

Cars moved like tiny glowing insects through the darkness.

People walked beneath umbrellas.

Families went home.

Lives continued.

It was strange.

For years, Claire had dreamed about one thing.

Freedom.

She imagined that the moment she escaped her stepfather, the moment someone finally believed her, everything would become peaceful.

She thought the nightmare would end with an arrest.

With handcuffs.

With a courtroom.

With someone saying:

"You were right."

But now she understood something.

The truth was not a door.

It was a hallway.

And every time you opened one door, another one appeared.

The detective, Daniel Hayes, stood near the hospital entrance.

He had not left.

Not even after his shift ended.

Claire noticed.

“You’re still here.”

Daniel looked away from the window.

“So are you.”

Claire frowned.

“I’m injured.”

“No.”

His voice was serious.

“You’re a witness in the middle of something dangerous.”

Claire looked at him.

“And you think sitting outside my room will stop them?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told her everything.

He didn’t think it would.

Because he knew.

Someone inside the police department had helped the people hunting her.

The very people assigned to protect her could be part of the problem.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“There’s something else in the recordings.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

He opened his notebook.

“The deputy sheriff wasn’t just destroying evidence.”

Claire waited.

“He was creating it.”

The room became colder.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel placed several printed photographs on the table.

“These are from old cases connected to your stepfather.”

Claire picked up the first picture.

A teenage girl.

Missing.

The second.

A young woman.

Found dead.

The third.

A man accused of assault.

Claire looked confused.

“What does this have to do with him?”

Daniel pointed at the corner of each photograph.

“Every investigation had the same problem.”

“What problem?”

“The evidence disappeared.”

Claire felt a knot forming in her stomach.

“And nobody noticed?”

“They noticed.”

Daniel sighed.

“They just didn’t know where to look.”

Claire slowly put the pictures down.

The truth was becoming darker.

Her stepfather had not survived because he was clever.

He survived because someone powerful protected him.

“How long?” she asked.

Daniel looked at her.

“How long what?”

“How long has this been happening?”

Daniel hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Almost ten years.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Ten years.

A decade of lies.

A decade of people looking away.

She remembered being fourteen.

The first time her stepfather broke something in the house.

Not her arm.

A lamp.

She remembered the sound.

The crash.

The silence afterward.

Her mother had walked into the room.

She saw the broken glass.

She saw Claire crying.

And she said:

“Look what you made him do.”

At the time, Claire believed those words.

She thought everything was her fault.

Now she knew.

That was the first weapon they used against her.

Not fists.

Not threats.

Guilt.

At 3:17 a.m., Daniel received a phone call.

His expression changed immediately.

Claire noticed.

“What happened?”

Daniel stepped away.

“Say that again.”

A pause.

Then his face became pale.

“Who authorized the transfer?”

Another pause.

“No. Nobody moves her.”

Claire stood.

“Who is moving?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Your mother.”

A cold feeling entered Claire’s chest.

“What?”

“They’re transferring her from the station.”

“Why?”

Daniel grabbed his coat.

“They claim she has protection from a legal representative.”

Claire stared.

“My mother doesn’t have a lawyer.”

Daniel looked at her.

“That’s what worries me.”

Twenty minutes later, Daniel and Claire arrived at the police station.

Claire was transported in a wheelchair because of her injury.

The moment she entered, she felt it.

The atmosphere was wrong.

Officers stopped talking.

People looked away.

Everyone knew something.

Daniel walked straight toward the interrogation room.

But before he reached it, a voice called out.

“Detective Hayes.”

Daniel stopped.

A tall man in a perfect black suit stood near the hallway.

He looked expensive.

Powerful.

Untouchable.

Claire recognized him immediately.

Not because she knew him.

Because she had heard his voice before.

From the recordings.

The man who visited her house late at night.

The man who spoke privately with her stepfather.

Daniel’s hand tightened.

“Deputy Marcus Vale.”

The deputy smiled.

“Still chasing ghosts?”

Claire felt her blood run cold.

This was him.

The man behind the badge.

The man who had been hiding behind authority.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re under investigation.”

Marcus laughed softly.

“By who?”

Nobody answered.

That was the problem.

Marcus looked around.

At the officers.

At the cameras.

At the building.

Then he looked directly at Claire.

“You have no idea what you started.”

Claire stared back.

For the first time, she wasn’t afraid.

“You’re wrong.”

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

Claire leaned forward.

“I didn’t start anything.”

She looked at the badge on his chest.

“You did.”

The deputy’s smile disappeared.

Inside the interrogation room, Claire’s mother sat calmly.

Too calmly.

When she saw Claire, she smiled.

“You really think you won?”

Claire said nothing.

Her mother leaned forward.

“You still don’t understand.”

Daniel watched carefully.

“Understand what?”

Her mother looked at Claire.

“Your stepfather was never the biggest threat.”

Silence.

Claire felt her stomach tighten.

“What are you talking about?”

Her mother smiled.

“The people protecting him.”

Daniel immediately stepped closer.

“Who?”

Claire’s mother looked toward the one-way mirror.

Then whispered:

“The people who own this city.”

Nobody spoke.

The statement hung in the room.

Crazy.

Impossible.

Except Claire had learned something.

The truth often sounded impossible before people were forced to accept it.

Then suddenly—

The lights went out.

Every screen in the station turned black.

Officers shouted.

Emergency alarms activated.

Daniel grabbed his radio.

“Everyone stay where you are!”

But it was too late.

The security system had been breached.

Someone was inside.

Someone with access.

Someone who knew exactly where Claire was.

The emergency lights flickered on.

And on the main computer screen appeared one message:

RETURN THE RECORDINGS.

OR SHE DIES NEXT.

Everyone looked at Claire.

But Claire was no longer looking at the screen.

She was looking at Deputy Marcus Vale.

Because while everyone else looked shocked…

He looked afraid.

And that was the first proof Claire needed.

The powerful man behind the badge finally realized something.

The girl he thought he destroyed…

May you like

Had become the one person who could bring him down.
