Chapter 12: The Child Ethan Created

Nobody moved.
The stranger stood at the end of the hallway, surrounded by flashing emergency lights.
A young woman.
Maybe a few years younger than Claire.
Dark hair.
Sharp eyes.
A face that carried a strange familiarity.
Not because Claire knew her.
Because Claire saw pieces of herself.
The same eyes.
The same expression.
The same quiet anger hidden beneath the surface.
Daniel kept his weapon raised.
“Identify yourself.”
The woman looked at him.
Then at Claire.
“My name is Lily Cross.”
The surname hit harder than anything else.
Cross.
Ethan’s name.
Claire felt her chest tighten.
“You’re his daughter.”
Lily nodded.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Another daughter.
Another secret.
Another person Ethan had controlled.
Claire looked at her.
“How old are you?”
“Twenty-two.”
Claire’s expression changed.
Twenty-two.
Almost her age.
Almost the same timeline.
Lily stepped closer.
Daniel immediately moved in front of Claire.
“Stay back.”
Lily stopped.
“I’m not here to hurt her.”
Claire looked past Daniel.
“Then why are you here?”
Lily’s eyes became colder.
“Because Ethan is about to do what he always does.”
“What?”
“He’s going to make everyone believe the wrong person is the enemy.”
They moved Lily into a secure room.
Nobody trusted her.
Not after everything.
Trust had become a dangerous currency in Claire’s world.
Everyone carried secrets.
Everyone had another version of the story.
Lily sat across from Claire.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Finally, Claire asked:
“When did you know about me?”
Lily looked down.
“Since I was a child.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“Ethan told me.”
“Why?”
Lily smiled bitterly.
“Because he wanted me to hate you.”
The answer shocked Claire.
“He told me you stole his love.”
Claire stared.
“He said you were the daughter who destroyed his life.”
A pause.
“He said if you had never existed, everything would have been different.”
Claire felt anger rise.
“He blamed me?”
Lily nodded.
“He needed someone to blame.”
Lily explained.
Ethan had raised her differently.
Claire was raised to be silent.
Lily was raised to be loyal.
He taught her how to read people.
How to manipulate conversations.
How to find weaknesses.
How to control situations.
He didn’t treat her like a daughter.
He trained her like an instrument.
A successor.
A replacement.
“He wanted me to become him,” Lily said.
Claire looked at her.
“And did you?”
Lily was silent.
Then:
“For a while.”
Years earlier.
Lily grew up inside Ethan’s world.
She saw things Claire never saw.
The meetings.
The deals.
The people who begged for mercy.
She watched powerful people kneel before him.
And she believed that was strength.
Ethan told her:
“People are simple.”
“They want money.”
“They want power.”
“They want safety.”
“Give them something to fear, and they will obey.”
Lily believed him.
Until one day.
She discovered the truth.
Ethan had not only destroyed strangers.
He had destroyed his own family.
She found files.
Old recordings.
Documents.
Including information about Claire.
She discovered Ethan had spent years hunting his first daughter.
Not protecting her.
Not loving her.
Controlling her.
That was when Lily understood.
She wasn’t his daughter.
She was his creation.
Claire looked at her.
“Why help me now?”
Lily hesitated.
Then answered:
“Because I know where Ethan is.”
Everyone became alert.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Where?”
Lily looked at him.
“The place where he kept everything.”
“The archive?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“The real archive.”
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Lily looked at Claire.
“The files you released were only copies.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
Lily nodded.
“Ethan expected you to find them.”
Daniel stood.
“Then what did you upload?”
Lily answered:
“A trap.”
Silence.
Claire remembered Ethan’s reaction.
His anger.
His fear.
He knew something had gone wrong.
Lily continued.
“The real information is somewhere else.”
“Where?”
Lily looked at Claire’s necklace.
The same pendant she had carried all her life.
“You already have the key.”
Claire touched it.
“But the archive isn’t inside this.”
“No.”
Lily shook her head.
“The key opens the location.”
Before anyone could ask another question, the room’s lights flickered.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at the cameras.
“No.”
The screens activated.
Ethan appeared.
But this time…
He wasn’t smiling.
He looked exhausted.
Almost defeated.
“Lily.”
The young woman stared at the screen.
“You disappoint me.”
Her face changed.
Not fear.
Pain.
Like hearing his voice brought back years of memories.
Ethan continued.
“I gave you everything.”
Lily whispered:
“You gave me a prison.”
Claire watched silently.
For the first time, she saw something unexpected.
Ethan wasn’t controlling Lily.
He was afraid of losing her.
Because Lily was the only person he had created who knew his entire system.
“You think Claire will save you?”
Ethan laughed.
“She couldn’t save herself.”
Lily looked at the screen.
“No.”
A pause.
“She saved herself.”
Ethan’s expression darkened.
And Claire noticed.
That sentence affected him.
Because it was true.
Claire had survived without him.
Without her mother.
Without her father.
Without anyone.
Ethan suddenly changed tactics.
“Claire.”
She looked at the screen.
“You want the truth?”
She said nothing.
“I can give it to you.”
Daniel immediately said:
“Don’t listen.”
But Ethan continued.
“Your father hid something from you.”
Claire’s expression changed.
Again.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece.
“What?”
Ethan smiled slightly.
“Your father didn’t disappear to protect you.”
Michael’s confession returned to her mind.
The fear.
The guilt.
The lies.
Ethan continued:
“He disappeared because he was guilty.”
Claire stared.
“You already said that.”
“Yes.”
“But you don’t know why.”
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
A police report.
Twenty years old.
Claire looked at the title.
Her face slowly lost color.
Incident Report: Death of Michael Bennett’s Partner.
Daniel looked shocked.
“That’s not possible.”
Claire turned.
“What?”
Daniel stared at the document.
“Because his partner…”
He stopped.
Claire looked at him.
“Who?”
Daniel whispered:
“The person Michael was accused of killing…”
A pause.
“Was my father.”
Silence.
Everything stopped.
Claire looked at Daniel.
Then at Ethan.
Then at the document.
Another connection.
Another impossible truth.
Ethan’s voice echoed:
“Now you understand.”
“You were never just my daughter.”
“You were never just Michael’s daughter.”
A pause.
“You were the center of everything.”
The screen went black.
And on every monitor appeared a final message:
THE TRUTH WILL DESTROY THEM ALL.
Claire stood in the darkness.
For the first time, she wondered something terrifying.
What if Ethan wasn’t afraid of the truth coming out?
What if Ethan wanted the truth released?
Because maybe…
May you like
The truth was the weapon.
