Chapter 13: The Enemy Inside the Truth

The message remained on every screen.

THE TRUTH WILL DESTROY THEM ALL.

Nobody spoke.

The words felt heavier than any threat Ethan had ever made.

Because this time, he wasn’t trying to hide something.

He was warning them.

Claire stood in the center of the room, surrounded by people connected by one impossible chain of secrets.

Her father.

Her mother.

Ethan.

Daniel.

Lily.

Everyone had a connection.

Everyone had a hidden chapter.

And somehow, she was the person standing in the middle of it all.

Daniel stared at the document displayed on the screen.

His face had lost all color.

Claire noticed.

“Daniel.”

He didn’t respond.

“Daniel.”

Finally, he looked at her.

“What?”

“You knew my father.”

Daniel swallowed.

“No.”

“Then why did you recognize that report?”

Silence.

The silence answered before he did.

Claire stepped closer.

“You knew.”

Daniel looked away.

“I knew the case.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

His jaw tightened.

“I knew the name.”

Claire felt the betrayal rising again.

Another secret.

Another person who had looked her in the eyes while hiding the truth.

“Everyone knows something.”

Her voice became quiet.

“Everyone except me.”

Daniel sat down.

For the first time, he looked exhausted.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I was sixteen when it happened.”

Claire stopped.

“Sixteen?”

Daniel nodded.

“My father was a police investigator.”

He looked at the floor.

“He was investigating Ethan’s network.”

Claire listened carefully.

“My father discovered that Michael Bennett was also investigating Ethan.”

Daniel paused.

“They became allies.”

Claire frowned.

“My father and Michael?”

“Yes.”

Daniel continued.

“They were trying to build a case together.”

“Then what happened?”

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“One night, my father disappeared.”

A cold feeling entered the room.

“The next morning, he was found dead.”

Claire looked at the report.

“And Michael was blamed?”

Daniel nodded.

“Evidence pointed toward him.”

“Did he do it?”

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

That answer surprised her.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Because the evidence disappeared.”

Claire understood immediately.

Ethan.

Again.

Always Ethan.

Lily interrupted.

“That’s exactly what he wanted.”

Everyone looked at her.

“What?”

Lily stared at the screen.

“Ethan doesn’t destroy people by killing them.”

She pointed at the message.

“He destroys the truth around them.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Explain.”

Lily continued.

“He creates confusion.”

“He mixes real facts with lies.”

“He gives everyone a reason to doubt everyone else.”

She looked at Claire.

“Your father might have done something wrong.”

A pause.

“Your mother definitely did.”

“Daniel’s family suffered.”

“Ethan himself has done terrible things.”

“But Ethan’s greatest victory is making everyone believe the truth is impossible to find.”

Claire remained silent.

Because she understood.

The battlefield was not the courtroom.

It was people’s minds.

Suddenly, Claire’s phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Everyone became alert.

She answered.

No one spoke.

Then a voice appeared.

Michael.

Her father.

“Claire.”

She froze.

“Dad?”

Daniel immediately moved closer.

Michael sounded weak.

“Listen to me.”

“Where are you?”

“Don’t worry about me.”

Claire’s expression changed.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“Ethan is trying to make you choose.”

Claire frowned.

“Choose what?”

“Between the truth and the people you love.”

The line became unstable.

“Dad, what are you talking about?”

Michael whispered:

“The archive is not evidence.”

Everyone became silent.

“What?”

“It’s a weapon.”

Claire looked at Lily.

“What does that mean?”

Michael continued.

“Your grandmother didn’t collect secrets to expose criminals.”

A pause.

“She collected them to control them.”

Claire felt cold.

“What?”

“The archive contains information that could destroy innocent people.”

Daniel immediately understood.

“Ethan wants to release it.”

“Yes.”

Michael’s voice became urgent.

“He wants the world to burn because he believes if everyone falls, nobody can judge him.”

The connection started breaking.

“Dad, wait.”

One final sentence came through.

“Claire…”

“Do not let yourself become the person Ethan believes you are.”

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily said:

“He’s right.”

Claire looked at her.

“About what?”

“The archive.”

Daniel frowned.

“You knew?”

Lily nodded.

“I saw it.”

“Where?”

“Years ago.”

She looked at Claire.

“And that’s why I ran.”

Lily explained.

When Ethan trained her to become his successor, he eventually showed her the real archive.

Not because he trusted her.

Because he wanted to test her.

Inside were thousands of secrets.

But among them were names of ordinary people.

People who had nothing to do with Ethan.

Family members.

Children.

Employees.

People connected only because someone powerful once crossed paths with them.

Ethan didn’t care.

To him, collateral damage was acceptable.

Lily said:

“That’s when I realized.”

Claire waited.

“He didn’t want power.”

“What did he want?”

Lily looked at the screen.

“He wanted proof that everyone was as terrible as he was.”

For the first time, Claire understood Ethan.

Not his actions.

Not his cruelty.

But his goal.

He wanted the world to become hopeless.

Because if everyone was guilty…

Nobody could call him evil.

Nobody could judge him.

Everyone would be trapped in the same darkness.

Claire looked at the pendant.

The key.

The archive.

The choice.

Then Daniel received an alert.

He checked his phone.

His face changed.

“What?”

He handed it to Claire.

A news report was appearing online.

A major leak.

Thousands of documents.

Already spreading.

Daniel whispered:

“He started.”

Claire looked at the screen.

But something was wrong.

The documents were not from the archive.

They were edited.

Manipulated.

False information mixed with real information.

Ethan wasn’t releasing the truth.

He was releasing chaos.

Claire understood.

“He wants everyone to fight each other.”

Daniel nodded.

“And while everyone is distracted…”

Claire finished:

“He disappears.”

Suddenly, Lily stood.

“I know where he is.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Lily looked at Claire.

“The original archive location.”

Daniel immediately asked:

“Where?”

Lily hesitated.

Then:

“Under the old Bennett estate.”

Claire froze.

“My father’s house?”

“No.”

Lily shook her head.

“The house before that.”

“What house?”

Lily looked at her.

“The house where Ethan grew up.”

They arrived at the abandoned Cross estate before sunrise.

A massive old mansion hidden outside the city.

Forgotten.

Rotting.

But still standing.

Like Ethan himself.

Claire walked through the entrance.

Every wall seemed to carry history.

Every room held another secret.

Lily led them downstairs.

To a hidden basement.

At the end of the hallway was a steel door.

No handle.

No lock.

Only a scanner.

Claire touched the pendant.

The door opened.

Inside was a room filled with thousands of files.

Photographs.

Documents.

Recordings.

The entire history of Ethan Cross.

Daniel whispered:

“This is everything.”

Claire walked forward.

Then she stopped.

On the center table was one final file.

Her name.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Not of her.

Of Ethan.

Holding a baby.

A newborn.

And behind them stood Rebecca.

The date was twenty-two years ago.

Claire looked closer.

Then her heart stopped.

Because written beneath the photograph was a sentence:

“Subject Claire Bennett was not my first child.”

Another document was attached.

A birth record.

Another name.

Another child.

But this time…

The name shocked everyone.

Because it belonged to someone standing right beside her.

Lily.

Claire looked at her half-sister.

Lily looked away.

And whispered:

“Ethan never told you the truth.”

Claire’s voice was barely audible.

“What truth?”

Lily closed her eyes.

“I’m not your sister.”

A pause.

“I’m your twin.”

The room went silent.
