Chapter 4: The Woman Who Chose the Monster

The screen went black.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The only sound inside the ruined bedroom was the faint hum of the hidden camera that had just revealed itself.

Claire stared at the empty monitor.

Her fingers slowly tightened around the piece of paper.

“You were never the only one recording.”

Those words repeated in her mind.

Not because they frightened her.

Because they confused her.

She had spent seven years collecting evidence against Ethan Cross.

Seven years documenting every threat.

Every lie.

Every moment when he believed nobody was watching.

But now Ethan claimed someone else had been recording too.

Someone else had been collecting information.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire.”

She didn’t respond.

“Claire, look at me.”

Slowly, she turned.

“What if he’s lying?”

Daniel’s question hung in the room.

Claire looked back at the black screen.

“He lies.”

“Yes.”

“He manipulates people.”

“Yes.”

“He wants me afraid.”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

Claire looked down.

“But he also knows things nobody else knows.”

That was the problem.

Ethan Cross was a monster.

But monsters were dangerous because sometimes they told the truth.

The police searched the house for another three hours.

They found hidden cameras.

Not one.

Not two.

Thirty-seven.

Some were inside the bedrooms.

Some were inside the living room.

Some were hidden in places Claire had never noticed.

Daniel stood in the hallway, looking at the equipment being removed.

“This house wasn’t just a prison.”

Claire looked at him.

“What was it?”

Daniel stared at the cameras.

“A surveillance center.”

Claire felt cold.

“Ethan was watching everyone?”

“Looks like it.”

“But why?”

Daniel picked up one of the devices.

“Because information is power.”

Claire understood.

That was how people like Ethan survived.

Not through strength.

Through secrets.

Later that night, Daniel received confirmation.

Ethan Cross had never been officially transferred to prison.

The arrest documents existed.

The paperwork existed.

But the transportation records were fake.

Someone had created a fake prisoner movement.

Someone had helped him disappear.

Daniel threw the file onto the table.

“Someone inside the department is covering this.”

Claire looked at him.

“Marcus Vale.”

Daniel nodded.

“But not only him.”

She frowned.

“What do you mean?”

Daniel hesitated.

“There are too many missing pieces.”

“Such as?”

“The deputy couldn’t erase all those records alone.”

Claire stared.

“Then who helped him?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because they both knew.

Someone higher.

Someone with more authority.

At 2:00 a.m., Claire returned to her hospital room.

She couldn’t sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Ethan’s face on the screen.

That smile.

That confidence.

Like he knew something she didn’t.

The door opened.

Claire immediately sat up.

A nurse walked in.

“Sorry, I need to check your medication.”

Claire relaxed slightly.

The nurse approached.

Then stopped.

She looked directly at Claire.

And whispered:

“Don’t trust your mother.”

Claire froze.

The nurse walked away before she could respond.

“Wait.”

The woman didn’t turn around.

Claire stared at the closing door.

Who was she?

Why did she say that?

Ten minutes later, the nurse returned.

But this time, she wasn’t alone.

Daniel entered behind her.

Claire looked between them.

“What’s going on?”

The nurse removed her mask.

She was older than Claire expected.

Maybe early fifties.

Her eyes looked tired.

Like someone who had carried a secret for years.

“My name is Laura Bennett.”

Claire waited.

“I knew your mother.”

The room became silent.

Claire’s expression hardened.

“Everyone seems to know my family except me.”

Laura looked down.

“That’s because your mother made sure you didn’t know the truth.”

Daniel watched carefully.

“Tell her.”

Laura took a deep breath.

“Your mother wasn’t protecting Ethan.”

Claire’s face changed.

“What?”

“She was protecting herself.”

Twenty years earlier.

Before Ethan Cross.

Before the violence.

Before the lies.

Claire’s mother, Rebecca, was different.

She was ambitious.

Intelligent.

And desperate to escape poverty.

She met Ethan when he was building his business empire.

At first, he seemed perfect.

Successful.

Charming.

Powerful.

But behind the expensive suits was a man obsessed with control.

Rebecca discovered too late that Ethan didn’t love people.

He collected them.

Friends.

Employees.

Partners.

Even family.

Everyone was a piece on his chessboard.

When Rebecca tried to leave, she discovered something terrifying.

Ethan had evidence against her.

Financial crimes.

Illegal deals.

Secrets from her past.

He had built a cage around her.

And he had the key.

Claire listened silently.

“So my mother was trapped?”

Laura nodded.

“Yes.”

“But she still helped him hurt me.”

Laura looked away.

“Yes.”

That answer hurt more than any lie.

Claire whispered:

“Why?”

Laura’s voice became softer.

“Because some people become so afraid of losing everything that they start protecting the person destroying them.”

Claire looked toward the window.

Rain covered the glass.

A thousand tiny drops racing downward.

Like all the tears she had never allowed herself to cry.

Then Laura revealed the final secret.

“The recordings Ethan mentioned…”

Claire looked at her.

“What about them?”

“Your mother made them.”

The room froze.

Daniel stared.

“Impossible.”

Laura shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Claire.

“She started recording Ethan before you did.”

Claire felt dizzy.

“Why?”

“Because she was planning to escape.”

“Then why didn’t she?”

Laura was silent.

Then she answered:

“Because Ethan found out.”

Claire stood up despite the pain.

“My mother recorded him?”

Laura nodded.

“And Ethan discovered the recordings.”

“What happened?”

Laura looked at the floor.

“That night was when everything changed.”

Claire waited.

“Your mother made a deal.”

The words hit harder than expected.

“A deal?”

Laura nodded.

“She gave Ethan something valuable.”

“What?”

Laura looked directly at Claire.

“You.”

The room went completely silent.

Claire felt like the air disappeared.

“No.”

Laura’s eyes filled with sadness.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“My mother wouldn’t…”

But the memories came back.

The excuses.

The silence.

The times Rebecca looked away.

The times she told Claire to stop fighting.

The times she said:

“Just apologize.”

Claire whispered:

“She chose him.”

Laura nodded.

“Yes.”

Suddenly, every phone in the room started ringing.

Daniel grabbed his.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

Only one sentence.

He read it aloud.

“Ask Claire what happened on the night her father died.”

Claire froze.

“My father?”

Daniel looked at her.

“You never mentioned your biological father.”

Claire’s face went pale.

Because nobody knew.

Nobody except her mother.

And Ethan.

Her biological father had died when she was young.

An accident.

That was what everyone told her.

But now…

A terrifying question appeared.

What if it wasn’t an accident?

Claire looked at Daniel.

“My father didn’t die.”

Her voice trembled.

“He was killed.”

The lights suddenly flickered.

The hospital hallway went dark.

And from the speaker above them…

A voice whispered.

A voice Claire recognized.

Her mother.

“Claire…”

Everyone looked up.

Rebecca’s voice continued.

“I’m sorry.”

A pause.

Then:

“But you need to know the truth about your father.”

The speaker went silent.

Claire stared at the ceiling.

Because for the first time…

May you like

She realized her entire life might have been built on a lie.
