Chapter 8 - The Name on the WallDarkness swallowed the room.

I heard my father's voice.

“Stay behind me.”

Metal scraped against metal outside.

Someone had locked the door.

Ethan pulled out his phone.

“No signal.”

I touched the wall.

Cold steel.

No handles.

No windows.

Then I noticed something.

A red light.

It blinked once.

Twice.

A camera.

Someone was watching.

I looked directly into it.

“You wanted me here.”

Silence.

Then a speaker crackled.

A voice came through.

“You finally opened the vault.”

My father stepped toward the camera.

“Identify yourself.”

The voice laughed.

“You still think this is about money.”

I recognized something in the tone.

Not the person.

The confidence.

Whoever this was had been close to us for years.

The voice continued.

“Your wife nearly destroyed the truth twenty years ago.”

My father froze.

“Don't speak about her.”

“You covered up the murder.”

“I did not.”

“You buried the evidence.”

“To protect my daughter.”

A pause.

Then:

“She isn't your daughter.”

I stopped breathing.

My father turned toward me.

“What did you say?”

The speaker laughed.

“The truth is always more valuable when people think it belongs to them.”

I felt the room tilt.

My father grabbed the camera.

“Who are you?”

The voice answered with one word.

“Jonathan.”

My blood ran cold.

“That's impossible,” I whispered.

My father looked at me.

“Jonathan Vale is dead.”

The speaker crackled.

“I was.”

A panel in the wall opened.

A small screen came alive.

A medical photograph appeared.

A man lying unconscious in a hospital bed.

Facial scars.

Bandages.

But unmistakably alive.

Jonathan Vale.

I covered my mouth.

Vanessa had lied.

Everyone had.

The voice continued.

“Richard Mercer tried to kill me.”

My father stepped closer.

“Why didn't you contact us?”

“Because I was told you ordered the hit.”

My father looked devastated.

“Who told you?”

Jonathan answered.

“The person who still controls Ellison Holdings.”

A name appeared on the screen.

I knew it immediately.

Victor Hale.

Ellison Holdings' vice chairman.

My father's closest business partner.

My father's friend for thirty-one years.

My father's right hand.

I turned toward my father.

“You trusted him.”

My father didn't answer.

The archive door suddenly opened.

Security guards rushed inside.

But Jonathan's voice continued.

“He has spent years steering both families toward war.”

Ethan grabbed the nearest file.

“Why?”

The screen changed.

A corporate structure appeared.

Mercer Dynamics.

Ellison Holdings.

A network of shell corporations between them.

At the bottom sat a private investment vehicle.

Owned by Victor Hale.

My stomach twisted.

He had been buying distressed Mercer shares through hidden entities.

He wanted Adrian weakened.

He wanted the Ellison family distracted.

Then he would buy the remaining pieces.

Not for revenge.

For control.

It was a corporate coup disguised as a family feud.

My father stared at the screen.

“Victor.”

A phone rang.

His.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a message appeared.

BOARD MEETING AT 9 A.M.

I looked at the clock.

8:34.

“Dad.”

He nodded.

“We have twenty-six minutes.”

“For what?”

“To stop him.”

We hurried upstairs.

The moment we reached the main hall, every television in the building switched on.

A news broadcast was already playing.

The headline flashed across the screen.

MARCUS ELLISON ACCUSED OF FINANCIAL FRAUD

My father's face appeared beside mine.

Then a file.

Then recordings.

Edited recordings.

False evidence.

Someone had already released the story.

Ethan swore under his breath.

My father looked at me.

“Victor moved faster than we thought.”

I watched the screen.

Then noticed something else.

The reporter held a document.

The same document I had just seen in Vault 17.

The copy from my mother's archive.

Someone had access to the vault before us.

Someone had known exactly what we would find.

And then I understood.

May you like

The traitor had never been waiting outside the vault.

He had been waiting inside our own company.
