Chapter 13 - The Man Who Never DiedThe footsteps stopped.

A man emerged from the corridor.
Older.
Scarred.
Walking with a cane.
My father raised his weapon.
The man lifted both hands.
“Marcus.”
My father stared.
“No.”
I knew the face from the photograph.
Jonathan Vale.
Alive.
He looked at me.
“Claire.”
Then at Vanessa.
“Eleanor.”
Vanessa burst into tears.
“You knew?”
Jonathan nodded.
“I've known for years.”
My father lowered the weapon.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“You could have contacted me.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Twenty years ago.”
My father went still.
“Your messages never reached me.”
Victor.
Again.
Always Victor.
Jonathan looked toward Adrian lying on the floor.
“He's bleeding badly.”
We moved him to the medical room.
Fortunately, the bullet had passed through the shoulder.
He survived.
Barely.
While doctors stabilized him, Jonathan told us the truth.
He had not been killed.
He had been attacked and left for dead.
A doctor loyal to my mother saved him.
By the time he recovered, Victor had already convinced everyone he was dead.
Jonathan spent years gathering evidence.
He had built a secret network inside Mercer and Ellison.
Daniel was one of his agents.
Vanessa had unknowingly been used by Victor.
Adrian had been manipulated through his own ambition.
The entire conflict had been engineered.
But Jonathan revealed one final detail.
“Victor isn't working alone.”
I looked at him.
“Who else?”
He handed me a photograph.
A senior judge.
A billionaire investor.
A federal contractor.
And one name I recognized.
The chief strategist of Ellison Holdings.
My father's most trusted board member after Victor.
My uncle.
Samuel Ellison.
My stomach dropped.
“No.”
Jonathan nodded.
“Victor needed someone inside the family.”
My father looked broken.
“Samuel.”
“He believes the company should belong to him.”
“And if he can't have it?”
Jonathan looked at me.
“He'll destroy it.”
A phone rang.
My father's.
The screen showed Samuel's name.
He answered.
“Samuel.”
A calm voice spoke.
“You found Jonathan.”
My father stared at me.
“How?”
“Because you were never as good at hiding things as you believed.”
Samuel's voice continued.
“Bring Claire and Vanessa to the old exchange building.”
“Why?”
“Because I have something they need.”
“What?”
“The original patent.”
My father closed his eyes.
Samuel continued.
“Come alone.”
The call ended.
I looked at Jonathan.
“He wants us there.”
Jonathan nodded.
“He's setting a trap.”
“I know.”
Vanessa looked at me.
“We go anyway.”
My father shook his head.
“No.”
I stood.
“We don't have a choice.”
“We have choices.”
I looked at him.
“This started because everyone kept deciding what was best for me.”
He said nothing.
“I am done being protected by secrets.”
Jonathan nodded.
“She is right.”
We prepared.
My father wanted security.
Jonathan wanted surveillance.
I wanted one thing.
The truth.
We entered the old exchange building at midnight.
No lights.
No guards.
Just a single elevator.
It opened.
Inside stood Samuel.
He smiled.
“Claire.”
He looked at Vanessa.
“My other niece.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You stole our lives.”
Samuel shook his head.
“No.”
He smiled.
“I only revealed what your father was too weak to admit.”
May you like
Then the elevator doors closed behind us.
And the building locked down.
