Chapter 12 - Beneath Mercer HouseWe returned to the mansion before dawn.

The same house where Adrian had raised the belt.

The same fireplace where Vanessa had laughed.

Now everything felt different.

Adrian walked to the study.

He removed a painting from the wall.

Behind it was a hidden keypad.

My father stared.

“Your grandfather never told me about this.”

Adrian entered a code.

Nothing happened.

He tried another.

Still nothing.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What are you using?”

“My grandfather's birthday.”

“Wrong,” I said.

Everyone looked at me.

I examined the engraving above the fireplace.

A sentence.

What is inherited must be remembered.

I typed my mother's birth date.

The wall unlocked.

A staircase descended.

We followed it underground.

At the bottom was a laboratory.

Dust covered everything.

Except one machine.

It was still running.

A low electrical hum filled the room.

My father walked toward it.

“Impossible.”

“What is it?”

“The original energy storage system.”

Adrian stared.

“This is what Mercer Dynamics was built on.”

My father shook his head.

“No.”

He pointed deeper into the laboratory.

“This is what came before it.”

Vanessa found a computer terminal.

She activated it.

A password prompt appeared.

I typed my mother's name.

Access denied.

My father tried his own.

Denied.

Adrian entered Richard Mercer's.

Denied.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Try mine.”

I did.

The screen unlocked.

We stared at her.

Inside was a complete digital archive.

Financial records.

Research.

Medical files.

Adoption documents.

And one folder.

PROJECT DAUGHTER

Vanessa whispered:

“No.”

I opened it.

The first document identified her as Eleanor Ellison's second child.

The second contained her original birth name.

The third contained a photograph of my mother holding two infants.

Twins.

Me.

Vanessa.

Then came the final file.

A contract.

Signed by Victor Hale.

He had arranged Vanessa's disappearance.

But there was something else.

A payment ledger.

Millions of dollars transferred over twenty-three years.

Recipients included doctors.

Lawyers.

Politicians.

Corporate executives.

Journalists.

People who had quietly helped erase Vanessa from the Ellison history.

My father looked sick.

“Victor built an entire machine to control us.”

“Why?”

Adrian asked.

I kept scrolling.

At the bottom of the ledger was one final recipient.

Daniel Cross.

Ethan froze.

I turned toward him.

“You knew.”

He raised his hands.

“Claire, listen.”

My father stepped between us.

“You're the leak.”

Ethan looked at me.

“I didn't work for Victor.”

“Then explain the payments.”

“I was investigating him.”

“From inside my father's company?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell us?”

“Because I needed proof.”

I stared at him.

Then something appeared on the screen.

A new message.

HELLO, CLAIRE.

I froze.

The keyboard began typing by itself.

Words appeared one at a time.

YOU FOUND THE LAB.

Another line.

NOW FIND THE MAN IN THE MIRROR.

The lights went out.

A gunshot echoed.

Someone screamed.

Then emergency lights flickered on.

Ethan was on the floor.

Blood covered his shirt.

My father shouted his name.

I ran toward him.

Then stopped.

Because Ethan wasn't the one who had been shot.

Adrian was.

He stood in front of Vanessa.

A dark stain spreading across his chest.

He looked at me.

“I guess I finally did something right.”

Then he collapsed.

And from somewhere deeper beneath the laboratory came the sound of footsteps.

May you like

One person.

Walking slowly toward us.
