Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Without a KingAt 8:17 the next morning, Adrian walked into Mercer Dynamics headquarters believing he could still save his company.

He was wrong.

The boardroom doors were locked.

His access card flashed red.

He tried again.

Red.

The receptionist stood behind the desk without meeting his eyes.

“Mr. Mercer, your temporary executive access has been suspended.”

“By whom?”

“The board.”

“I am the CEO.”

“Not according to the emergency resolution.”

Adrian stared at her.

“What emergency resolution?”

She slid an envelope across the desk.

He opened it.

His own signature appeared at the bottom.

Authorization for an independent board intervention.

He looked up.

“I never signed this.”

The receptionist finally met his eyes.

“Your security credentials did.”

Adrian walked away.

His hands were shaking.

Inside the conference room sat eight directors.

Seven were present.

The eighth appeared on screen.

It was my father.

Marcus Ellison.

Adrian stopped breathing.

“You.”

My father folded his hands.

“Good morning, Adrian.”

Adrian slammed the door.

“You can't be here.”

“I have every legal right to be here.”

“You own stock in my company.”

“More than stock.”

Adrian looked around the table.

“How much?”

Nobody answered.

Finally, the chairman spoke.

“Ellison Holdings currently controls thirty-four percent of voting rights through direct holdings, convertible debt, and preferred securities.”

Adrian's face went blank.

“That isn't possible.”

“It is.”

“You hid this from me.”

My father looked almost amused.

“You never asked.”

Adrian laughed.

“This is about Claire.”

“No.”

My father's voice turned cold.

“This is about what you did.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“She manipulated you.”

“Did she?”

“I've known her for three years.”

My father leaned back.

“And yet you never knew her surname.”

Silence.

The directors exchanged looks.

Adrian's face reddened.

“You used your daughter to infiltrate my company.”

My father shook his head.

“My daughter infiltrated nothing.”

He placed a file on the table.

“She married you.”

He opened it.

Inside were bank records.

Consulting contracts.

Wire transfers.

Invoices from shell companies.

Adrian stared.

“These are fabricated.”

“Then you should have no concern.”

He paused.

“Unless they're real.”

The chairman cleared his throat.

“We need your resignation pending investigation.”

Adrian slammed his palm on the table.

“You're removing me from my own company?”

“You created the circumstances.”

“No.”

Adrian pointed at my father's image.

“He's destroying me because Claire called him.”

My father corrected him.

“She called me after you struck her nineteen times.”

The room went silent.

Adrian swallowed.

“How do you know?”

“I have photographs.”

His face drained.

My father continued.

“Your security system recorded the entire event.”

Adrian looked toward the doors.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“You said you were watching.”

“No.”

My father's eyes hardened.

“I said my daughter was not alone.”

Adrian's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Then the chairman pushed a resignation document across the table.

Adrian didn't touch it.

“I won't resign.”

My father smiled without warmth.

“Then the board will remove you.”

“You think this ends here?”

“No.”

My father closed the file.

“It begins here.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What do you want?”

“The truth.”

“And if I refuse?”

My father leaned closer to the camera.

“Then I'll let the evidence speak.”

The meeting continued for thirty-eight minutes.

At the end of it, Adrian walked out without his title, without executive access, and without control of the company bearing his family name.

But that wasn't the worst part.

In the parking garage, Vanessa was waiting.

She hurried toward him.

“What happened?”

Adrian stared at her.

“You knew.”

Her expression changed.

“Knew what?”

“You knew about Claire.”

“I knew she had money.”

“How much?”

Vanessa said nothing.

“HOW MUCH?”

She stepped back.

Adrian suddenly understood.

“You've known.”

Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.

“Adrian, listen to me.”

“You knew who she was.”

“I didn't know everything.”

“But you knew enough.”

His voice cracked.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Vanessa looked around the garage.

Then whispered:

“Because I thought we were going to take it from her.”

Adrian stared.

And for the first time, he realized Vanessa had never been standing beside him.

May you like

She had been standing behind him.

Waiting for him to fall.
