Chapter 7 - My Husband's Real EmployerJulian wasn't building an empire. He was building an escape route. The countdown began at twenty minutes.

Marcus tried the vault controls.
Nothing.
Clara searched for a manual override.
Nothing.
I studied the screens.
"This isn't a bomb."
Marcus looked at me.
"How do you know?"
"Because whoever built this wants us to think it is."
The timer reached nineteen minutes.
A video appeared.
Julian.
Sitting in a dark room.
Calm.
Clean.
No signs he'd been involved in the shooting.
He looked directly into the camera.
"Kalin."
I hated hearing my name in his voice.
"You always did love solving puzzles."
"Go to hell."
He smiled.
"I hoped you'd say that."
Behind him stood Rook.
And another man.
Older.
Gray hair.
Expensive suit.
I recognized him immediately.
Victor Hale.
Chairman of a private international security consortium.
One of the most politically connected men in Washington.
I had protected him once.
He had thanked me personally.
Julian continued.
"You've spent thirteen years serving people who lie to you."
He leaned forward.
"I don't."
"You tried to kill me."
"I tried to remove you from the board."
"By shooting me?"
"That wasn't supposed to happen."
I laughed.
"You stole my armor."
"Because Clara needed it."
"She wasn't supposed to be wearing it."
Julian glanced toward Rook.
Rook said:
"The ambush was intended to frighten you into revealing your identity."
"It almost killed me."
"Yes."
Julian looked genuinely uncomfortable.
That almost made me angrier.
"You're a coward."
"I married you."
"You married a weapon you couldn't control."
He smiled.
"Exactly."
The screen changed.
Photographs of me.
Military.
Government.
Field operations.
Everything.
Julian had been collecting them.
Then came the final image.
A classified document.
KEYSTONE ASSET: KALIN VALE.
Julian had known for years.
I swallowed.
"Why?"
He answered:
"Arthur wanted you to expose Harborlight."
"And you?"
"I wanted Harborlight."
"What for?"
The image changed.
Shipping routes.
Private jets.
Offshore compounds.
Politicians.
A global network.
Julian said:
"Croft Corporation isn't a security company anymore."
I stared.
"It's an exit system."
"Exit from what?"
"Everything."
He smiled.
"Governments. Investigations. Taxes. Sanctions. Wars."
My skin prickled.
"You're building a private nation."
"Not a nation."
Victor Hale stepped forward.
"A sanctuary."
I almost laughed.
"For criminals?"
"For powerful people."
He looked at me.
"People who understand that governments eventually turn against everyone."
Rook added:
"And Harborlight identifies those people."
I understood.
The missing witnesses weren't the final product.
They were leverage.
Every disappearance created a debt.
Every debt created loyalty.
Every secret became currency.
And Julian had been helping build the ledger.
The timer reached fifteen minutes.
"What happens when it reaches zero?"
Julian smiled.
"The archive self-destructs."
"And us?"
"You die with it."
Clara shouted at the screen.
"You said you needed her alive!"
Julian looked at her.
"I did."
"Then why lock us inside?"
"Because she isn't alone."
He turned his head slightly.
I heard a door open.
Someone entered the room beside him.
A woman.
Older.
Blonde.
Clara gasped.
"No."
The woman looked into the camera.
Clara started crying.
"Mom?"
I stared.
Her mother was supposed to be dead.
The woman spoke.
"Elena."
Clara collapsed against the console.
"Mom!"
The screen went black.
The timer dropped to thirteen minutes.
Marcus looked at me.
"That's the trap."
I nodded.
"He wants Clara to open the archive."
"How?"
I looked at her.
The biometric scanner.
The fingerprint.
Her identity.
The vault hadn't recognized her.
It had recognized the person buried underneath Clara Bennett.
Her real name.
The archive required her.
"Get ready."
Marcus frowned.
"For what?"
"Breaking the vault."
"How?"
I picked up the brass key.
"From the inside."
We found an emergency maintenance panel.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
The timer hit ten minutes.
We crawled through.
At the far end was a steel ladder.
Above us, voices.
Guards.
I climbed first.
The hatch opened into the lower level of the facility.
Two guards.
I eliminated them silently.
Marcus followed.
Clara climbed last.
Then she stopped.
"What?"
She pointed down the hallway.
A glass door.
Behind it stood Julian.
He was alone.
Watching us.
He had somehow entered the facility.
He raised his hand.
Not a weapon.
A wedding ring.
My wedding ring.
I looked at my own hand.
My ring was gone.
Julian smiled.
"You left this in the helicopter."
He pressed something.
My ring vibrated.
A tiny red light appeared.
Clara whispered:
"It's a tracker."
I stared at Julian.
He had tracked me.
Not through the insignia.
Through the ring.
Then he spoke through the glass.
"You were never escaping me, Kalin."
May you like
The glass door unlocked.
And Julian stepped inside.
