Chapter 13 - Never ChooseThe trap was designed to make me decide who deserved to liveThe clock shattered.

The men behind Evelyn turned toward it.
That was enough.
I fired again.
The security shutters dropped.
Clara tackled Julian.
My father rolled from the chair.
Evelyn disappeared behind the desk.
The room became chaos.
I reached the hidden panel.
Inside was a biometric reader.
I pressed my thumb.
Nothing.
Clara pressed hers.
Nothing.
Then my father shouted:
"Kalin!"
He held up his hand.
A scar ran across his palm.
"Your mother used my DNA."
I understood.
The system required three generations.
Father.
Daughter.
The original architect.
But my mother wasn't there.
Or so I believed.
A voice came from the ceiling.
"Third identity verified."
I froze.
The system recognized someone nearby.
Evelyn stepped from behind the desk.
"You really thought your mother would make the final key biometric?"
"No."
I aimed at her.
"She made it behavioral."
Evelyn smiled.
"Exactly."
The system scanned our reactions.
Not fingerprints.
Decisions.
Harborlight didn't unlock when we chose who to save.
It unlocked when we refused.
The vault opened.
Data flooded onto the screens.
Millions of files.
Names.
Identities.
Bank accounts.
Governments.
Everything.
Evelyn looked almost proud.
"You see?"
"This ends tonight."
"No."
She smiled.
"This begins tonight."
She pressed the remote.
Every screen displayed one message.
GLOBAL IDENTITY REPLACEMENT PROTOCOL READY.
Clara whispered:
"What is that?"
I knew.
Evelyn wanted to activate Harborlight on a massive scale.
Not seventeen people.
Thousands.
Officials.
Witnesses.
Executives.
Anyone.
Everyone.
"You've been planning a purge."
"An evacuation."
"For whom?"
"The people who deserve to survive."
I looked at her.
"And who decides?"
She smiled.
"I do."
I stepped forward.
"No."
"You always hated being controlled."
"Yes."
"Then understand the irony."
She pressed the final command.
Nothing happened.
She frowned.
Pressed again.
Still nothing.
I smiled.
"You made one mistake."
"What?"
"You trusted Julian."
Her face changed.
Julian stood behind her.
Blood on his lip.
He had Clara's weapon in his hand.
He was shaking.
"Evelyn."
She turned.
"What are you doing?"
Julian raised the weapon.
"I changed the code."
Evelyn stared.
"You don't know the system."
"I know enough."
"You're lying."
Julian looked at me.
"For once, I'm not."
I couldn't believe it.
"Why?"
He swallowed.
"Because I saw what you were willing to do to Clara."
Evelyn laughed.
"You helped create this."
"I know."
"You killed Arthur."
"I know."
"You betrayed Kalin."
"I know."
He looked at me.
"I thought power would make me someone."
His voice cracked.
"It just made me afraid."
Evelyn raised her weapon.
Julian fired.
She fell.
Silence.
Clara stared at Julian.
"You saved us."
He looked at her.
"No."
He lowered the weapon.
"I saved myself from becoming her."
I approached him.
"You still killed Arthur."
"I know."
"You still tried to kill me."
"I know."
"You don't get forgiveness because you finally grew a conscience."
He nodded.
"I don't expect it."
Then a shot came from the doorway.
Julian jerked backward.
Blood spread across his shirt.
I spun.
Rook.
He stood in the doorway.
Evelyn was still alive.
She smiled.
"Thank you, Nathan."
Rook looked at me.
"You've been very difficult to kill."
He raised his weapon.
Clara stepped in front of me.
Rook fired.
Julian moved.
He took the bullet.
He fell.
I caught him.
"Kalin."
His voice was barely audible.
"Don't let them erase me."
I looked at him.
"What?"
"The system."
His hand trembled.
"Don't let Harborlight give me a new identity."
I understood.
He wasn't asking to live.
He was asking to be remembered.
Rook advanced.
The screens behind him flashed.
PURGE CANCELLED.
Then another line appeared.
MASTER ARCHITECT IDENTIFIED.
Everyone looked up.
The name appeared.
Not Evelyn.
Not Rook.
Not Arthur.
Not Elizabeth.
It was mine.
KALIN VALE.
I stared.
"No."
My father whispered:
"Your mother knew."
"About what?"
He looked at me.
May you like
"You didn't inherit Harborlight."
"You were built to become its final controller."
