Chapter 6 - The Final ArchiveArthur left the key where Julian would never lookThe house shook when the first explosion hit.

Clara fell against the wall.
Marcus fired through the window.
I moved toward the basement.
"Where are you going?"
"Down."
"Why?"
"Because Arthur liked hiding things underground."
The basement was dark.
Dust covered the floor.
Old storage boxes lined the walls.
I searched for anything unusual.
Nothing.
Then I saw it.
A crooked shelf.
Three books missing.
Behind it was a steel panel.
Fingerprint scanner.
I pressed my thumb against it.
Denied.
Marcus tried.
Denied.
Clara stepped forward.
The scanner unlocked.
I stared at her.
"How?"
She looked terrified.
"I don't know."
Marcus whispered:
"Her identity is tied to the archive."
The panel opened.
Inside was a narrow tunnel.
We entered.
The door closed behind us.
Ten meters later, we reached a reinforced room.
No electronics.
No cameras.
Just a metal table.
And a wooden box.
Arthur's handwriting was burned into the lid.
FOR KALIN.
I opened it.
Inside was a key.
Old-fashioned.
Brass.
Attached to a tag.
CROFT FOUNDATION - VAULT 7
I frowned.
"The company vault?"
Marcus shook his head.
"Not the company vault."
"What then?"
"The family vault."
We heard a distant boom.
The house above us was under attack.
I picked up the key.
"How do we get there?"
Marcus looked at Clara.
She said:
"Arthur has a private hangar."
"Where?"
"Leesburg."
We ran.
The tunnel exited behind the property.
A vehicle waited.
Marcus drove.
For forty minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Clara said:
"You're going to hate me."
"I already do."
She nodded.
"Fair."
I looked at her.
"Tell me."
"Julian isn't the head of Harborlight."
"I know."
"Rook isn't either."
"I figured."
She looked down.
"There is someone above both of them."
I glanced at her.
"Who?"
She shook her head.
"I never saw the face."
"What did you see?"
"A signature."
"Whose?"
"Arthur."
My jaw tightened.
"Arthur was involved?"
"No."
She handed me a photograph.
A document.
At the bottom was Arthur's signature.
But something was wrong.
I recognized his handwriting.
The signature was perfect.
Too perfect.
"Forgery."
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
"Who can forge Arthur's signature?"
"Someone who had access to his private office."
"Julian."
"No."
Marcus's eyes met mine through the rearview mirror.
"His lawyer."
The hangar came into view.
We parked.
Inside sat a black executive aircraft.
Arthur had always preferred private aviation.
We boarded.
The engines started before the doors fully closed.
As the aircraft climbed, Clara sat opposite me.
"There's one more thing."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"Julian knew your real identity."
I froze.
"No."
"He knew before he married you."
My chest felt suddenly colder than it had when the bullet entered.
"How?"
"Rook told him."
"Why would Rook?"
"Because Julian wanted to prove he could control you."
I looked toward the window.
The marriage.
The dinners.
The anniversaries.
The promises.
The entire relationship.
A carefully constructed operation.
I had spent five years believing I had married a man.
Maybe I'd married an assignment.
The aircraft landed near an underground facility beneath a Croft property.
Vault 7 required three things.
The brass key.
Arthur's biometric signature.
And a Keystone credential.
I provided the third.
The door opened.
Inside were hundreds of files.
Photographs.
Audio records.
Names.
Then I saw the wall.
Seventeen photographs.
Seventeen missing people.
Four children.
One of the photographs showed a young woman.
I stared.
Clara stopped breathing.
"That's my sister."
I turned.
"What?"
"She was nine."
Clara touched the photograph.
"My parents were killed."
Her finger trembled.
"She was supposed to be transported with them."
I looked at the file.
Status:
DECEASED.
Cause:
UNKNOWN.
Then a second document slid from the folder.
Recent date.
Seven years after her disappearance.
A surveillance image.
A woman walking through an airport.
Older.
Different hair.
But unmistakable.
Clara whispered:
"She's alive."
Before we could say anything else, every vault screen activated.
One sentence appeared.
WELCOME, KALIN.
Then another.
NOW PROVE YOU DESERVE TO KNOW WHO YOUR HUSBAND WORKS FOR.
May you like
The vault doors locked.
And somewhere inside the building, a timer began counting down.
