Chapter 12 - The TherapistShe had been inside my marriage long before Clara entered itI woke on grass.

Rain hit my face.

My ears were ringing.

The vault entrance was gone.

Smoke rose through the trees.

Marcus was alive.

Clara was alive.

Elizabeth was nowhere.

Julian was gone.

My father was missing.

And the black drawer was in my hands.

I opened the file.

Evelyn Cross.

Psychological operations specialist.

Former Keystone consultant.

Specialized in behavioral manipulation.

I remembered every session.

Every question.

Every suggestion.

Every time she'd said:

"Maybe you're expecting too much from Julian."

"Maybe his criticism comes from concern."

"Maybe your instincts are heightened because of your career."

She had slowly taught me to distrust myself.

That was how she worked.

Not by commanding.

By planting doubt.

Clara sat beside me.

"Can you believe this?"

"No."

"Neither can I."

I looked at her.

"You're still here."

"Unfortunately."

I almost laughed.

Then I looked toward the trees.

"You knew Evelyn."

Clara nodded.

"Rook used her."

"How?"

"She worked with my mother."

"What did your mother know?"

Clara swallowed.

"She knew Harborlight was being converted into something else."

"What?"

"An identity exchange."

I remembered my father's words.

People weren't disappearing.

They were being replaced.

Clara explained.

"Imagine a billionaire who's about to be arrested."

"He pays."

"Harborlight manufactures a new identity."

"Records?"

"Everything."

"Passport?"

"Yes."

"Biometrics?"

"Yes."

"Medical history?"

"Yes."

I looked at the file.

"So powerful people didn't need to disappear."

"They became someone else."

I finally understood the scale.

A criminal could become a senator.

A corrupt executive could become a philanthropist.

A murderer could become an anonymous businessman.

A witness could become officially dead.

A person could be erased while their identity was sold to someone else.

Evelyn wasn't controlling Harborlight for money.

She was controlling the world's most valuable commodity.

Identity.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Evelyn.

"Kalin."

My whole body tightened.

"You killed my husband?"

"No."

"You tried to."

"I allowed him to believe he could."

"Where are you?"

"At the place where you and I first met."

My old office.

Croft Tower.

"You want me to come."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I have your father."

I closed my eyes.

"Let him go."

"You know I can't."

"Then I'll come."

Clara grabbed my arm.

"Don't."

I looked at her.

Evelyn spoke again.

"And bring Clara."

The line ended.

Clara's eyes widened.

"She knows me."

"She knows everyone."

We drove to Croft Tower.

The building was almost empty.

Emergency lights.

No employees.

No security.

Every elevator opened automatically when we approached.

We reached the forty-third floor.

My old office.

The room where Julian had once kissed me.

Where Arthur had first recruited me.

Where Evelyn had sat across from me during therapy.

The room was dark.

Then the lights came on.

Evelyn stood behind my father's chair.

He was alive.

Bruised.

But conscious.

Julian stood beside her.

And behind them were six armed men.

Evelyn smiled.

"You came."

I raised my weapon.

"Move away from him."

"Still so direct."

"You have five seconds."

"You're very much like your mother."

My father whispered:

"Kalin, don't listen to her."

Evelyn ignored him.

"Do you know why I chose you?"

"Because I'm a Keystone operator."

"No."

She smiled.

"Because Julian could never manipulate you."

"So you manipulated him."

"Exactly."

Julian looked uncomfortable.

"He was always easy."

I looked at him.

His face showed humiliation.

Evelyn continued.

"Five years ago, I told Julian you were investigating him."

"You lied."

"Of course."

"Then I told him you were going to expose him."

"And he believed it."

"He always believed whatever protected his ego."

Julian flinched.

Evelyn looked almost amused.

"Then I told him Clara was interested in him."

Clara's eyes widened.

I turned toward her.

"You didn't meet him by accident."

She shook her head.

"No."

Evelyn smiled.

"Nothing about your marriage was accidental."

I felt the last pieces connect.

The affair.

The fights.

The therapy.

The stolen armor.

The attempted murder.

Everything had been engineered.

Evelyn lifted a remote.

"You came here for your father."

"Yes."

"Then choose."

A screen appeared.

Two video feeds.

One showed my father.

The other showed Clara's missing sister.

Alive.

Terrified.

Evelyn said:

"Save one."

Clara began crying.

I stared at the screens.

Then I noticed something.

The clock behind Evelyn.

Three seconds fast.

My mother had taught me that trick.

Time hides what people don't notice.

I smiled.

Evelyn noticed.

"What?"

I lowered my weapon.

"Nothing."

Then I fired at the clock.

The room erupted.

Because behind the clock was the failsafe.

May you like

And my mother had left me exactly one instruction.

Never choose.
