Chapter 11 - The Voice of My Dead MotherMy mother had been alive long enough to watch my entire marriageThere are sounds you cannot mistake.

My mother's voice was one of them.
But hearing it through a vault speaker twelve years after her supposed death made every instinct inside me scream.
"Where are you?"
Static.
Then:
"Below the Croft estate."
I looked at Elizabeth.
"You knew?"
She shook her head.
"No."
My father whispered:
"That isn't possible."
The speaker crackled.
"Daniel."
My father went rigid.
She had used his first name.
Only my mother called him that.
"Katherine."
Her voice returned.
"Tell Kalin to come alone."
I looked at Marcus.
He shook his head.
"Absolutely not."
The voice spoke again.
"Kalin, I know you're there."
My heart pounded.
"You've been watching."
"Yes."
"All these years?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you find me?"
"I did."
I froze.
"When?"
"Every birthday."
My throat tightened.
"You watched me?"
"From a distance."
"Why?"
"Because if Rook knew I was alive, he'd kill you."
I closed my eyes.
The vault door shook again.
My mother continued.
"Your husband knows where I am."
Julian looked at me.
"I do."
I turned.
"You've met her."
He didn't answer.
"Julian."
"Once."
"When?"
"Three years ago."
My mother spoke again.
"He came to me."
I felt sick.
"Why?"
"He wanted the failsafe."
"What did you tell him?"
"No."
A pause.
"Then he threatened you."
"No."
She sounded almost amused.
"He threatened your father."
I looked at my father.
Julian had known.
For years.
"He knew my father was alive."
"Yes."
I stared at my husband.
"You knew."
He looked away.
"I needed leverage."
I stepped closer.
"You let me mourn him."
"I protected the operation."
"You let me cry at his grave."
Julian's face hardened.
"It was necessary."
I wanted to shoot him.
But my mother spoke again.
"Don't."
I froze.
She knew.
"Why?"
"Because he's not the man you need to kill."
Julian smiled.
For the first time, I understood why.
There was always someone behind him.
"Rook."
"No."
"Victor Hale."
"No."
"Elizabeth."
Silence.
Then my mother said:
"The person controlling Harborlight is someone you've never suspected."
The vault door suddenly opened.
Smoke poured inside.
Rook entered.
Gunfire erupted.
Marcus returned fire.
Elizabeth pulled Clara behind a pillar.
I fired twice.
Rook disappeared.
Then a shot hit Marcus.
He dropped.
"Marcus!"
I dragged him behind cover.
Blood soaked his shoulder.
"Still alive."
"Good."
He grimaced.
"Not my best morning."
I almost smiled.
Then the vault alarm activated.
PURGE IN PROGRESS.
My mother shouted through the speaker:
"Kalin, run!"
The floor began vibrating.
Files ignited inside secure cabinets.
Electronic locks exploded.
Harborlight was destroying itself.
But one cabinet remained untouched.
A single black drawer.
I pulled it open.
Inside was one file.
No name.
Only a photograph.
I recognized the woman instantly.
She had attended my wedding.
She had held my bouquet.
She had kissed my cheek at the reception.
She had comforted me when Arthur died.
She had cried with me.
She had known Julian.
She had known Rook.
And she had been standing beside my mother in the original Harborlight photograph.
I whispered her name.
Clara looked over.
Her face went white.
"Who is she?"
I couldn't answer.
Because the photograph showed the person I had trusted most after Arthur.
My therapist.
My marriage counselor.
The woman who had spent three years telling me Julian was simply "under pressure."
The woman who had told me my instincts were signs of trauma.
The woman who had encouraged me to trust my husband.
The woman who had quietly shaped every decision I made.
Her name was Dr. Evelyn Cross.
The speaker came alive one last time.
My mother whispered:
May you like
"She is the architect."
Then the entire vault exploded.
