Chapter 9: The Father’s Final Move

For five minutes, Amelia didn't move.

The rain soaked through her coat.

Cars passed behind her.

People walked by.

The city continued breathing.

But her world had stopped.

Your father ordered him to.

Thomas's words repeated inside her head.

Not because they were impossible.

Because they suddenly explained everything.

The strange warnings.

The careful distance.

The way Arthur had never welcomed Nathan.

The way he had never completely rejected him either.

Her father had not been blind.

He had been watching.

And somehow...

He had been playing a game.

With her life as the board.

Amelia drove without knowing where she was going.

For the first time in years, she didn't trust her instincts.

Every instinct she had built was connected to lessons from her father.

Question everything.

Observe people.

Never reveal weakness.

But what happened when the person who taught you those rules was the person hiding the biggest secret?

She stopped outside the Blackwood headquarters.

The building towered above her.

A symbol of everything her family had created.

A symbol she had spent years running from.

Tonight, she walked toward it.

Not as Olivia.

Not as Nathan's wife.

Not as the quiet woman nobody noticed.

She entered as Amelia Blackwood.

And everyone noticed.

The lobby went silent.

Employees who had known her only as "Mr. Blackwood's daughter" whispered.

Some recognized her immediately.

Others looked confused.

Because the woman who had disappeared from public life for years had suddenly returned.

The security guard straightened.

"Ms. Blackwood."

Amelia stopped.

She had not heard that title spoken to her in years.

"Where is my father?"

The guard hesitated.

"His office."

"Tell him I'm coming."

The elevator doors closed.

For the first time in a long time...

Amelia was not entering a room to understand.

She was entering to demand answers.

Arthur Blackwood was standing beside the window when she arrived.

He didn't look surprised.

Of course he didn't.

That almost angered her more.

"You knew."

No greeting.

No explanation.

Arthur turned slowly.

"I knew you would eventually find out."

Amelia laughed softly.

A cold sound.

"That's your answer?"

"What do you want me to say?"

"The truth."

Arthur looked at her.

"The truth is complicated."

"No."

She stepped closer.

"The truth is something you either tell or you hide."

Silence.

Then Arthur walked toward his desk.

"I never wanted you involved."

"You involved me the day you allowed Nathan into my life."

His expression changed.

Pain.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But Amelia saw it.

"I didn't allow Nathan into your life."

"Thomas said you ordered him."

Arthur didn't deny it.

That was worse.

"Why?"

The question came quietly.

Not angry.

Not loud.

Just broken.

"Why would you do that?"

Arthur looked down.

"Because Daniel Voss was coming for you."

Amelia froze.

"That doesn't answer anything."

"It does."

"No, it doesn't."

Her voice rose.

"You sacrificed my marriage to protect me?"

Arthur remained silent.

"Did you know what Nathan would do?"

"Yes."

The answer hit like a physical blow.

"You knew."

"Yes."

"You knew he would betray me."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"I knew he might."

"Might?"

Amelia stared at him.

"You gambled with my life."

"No."

Arthur looked at her.

"I gambled with Daniel's plan."

The explanation came slowly.

Painfully.

Seven years earlier, Daniel Voss had been preparing something much larger than a corporate takeover.

He had spent years building influence.

Buying loyalty.

Collecting secrets.

But there was one obstacle.

The Blackwood family.

Especially Amelia.

Because unlike Arthur, Amelia represented something Daniel couldn't control.

The future.

"The moment you announced you were leaving the family name," Arthur said, "Daniel saw an opportunity."

"He approached Nathan."

"Yes."

"And you knew."

"I discovered it before you married."

Amelia's hands tightened.

"So you used Nathan as bait."

Arthur looked away.

"I used myself as bait."

She frowned.

"What?"

"Daniel believed Nathan was working for him."

Arthur walked to a locked drawer.

Removed a file.

Placed it on the desk.

"I needed Daniel to believe he was winning."

Amelia opened the file.

Inside were reports.

Surveillance.

Financial records.

Every movement Nathan made.

Every meeting.

Every transaction.

Seven years of observation.

Her stomach turned.

"You monitored my marriage."

Arthur didn't answer.

Because he had.

Amelia threw the file onto the desk.

"You watched me suffer."

Arthur's face finally broke.

Not completely.

But enough.

"I watched my daughter become stronger."

She stared at him.

"That's not an excuse."

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"It's not."

For the first time, Arthur Blackwood looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a father who had made a terrible choice.

"I thought if you knew the truth, you would run."

"I did run."

"But not from Daniel."

The sentence stopped her.

Arthur continued.

"You ran from everyone."

Before Amelia could respond, every screen in the office suddenly activated.

A news broadcast appeared.

A reporter stood outside Cole Strategic Holdings.

"Breaking news. Federal investigators have opened an inquiry into financial irregularities involving executive Nathan Cole..."

Amelia looked at the screen.

Nathan.

The investigation had begun.

But something was wrong.

Too fast.

Too public.

Arthur immediately picked up the phone.

"Who released this?"

A voice answered.

His expression changed.

"Impossible."

Amelia watched him.

"What?"

Arthur lowered the phone.

"Someone leaked the investigation before we were ready."

"Who?"

Arthur looked at the screen.

The reporter continued:

"Sources indicate the evidence was provided anonymously by an individual connected to Blackwood interests."

Amelia's blood ran cold.

Someone had used her family's name.

Someone wanted chaos.

Then every phone inside the office received the same notification.

A message.

From an unknown sender.

Arthur's phone.

Amelia's phone.

Thomas's phone.

Everyone's.

One sentence.

You wanted a war.

A second line appeared.

Now watch your empire burn.

Amelia looked at her father.

For the first time...

Arthur Blackwood looked afraid.

Not worried.

Not cautious.

Afraid.

Because whoever sent that message wasn't threatening Nathan.

Wasn't threatening Amelia.

They were declaring war on Blackwood.

Minutes later, Thomas rushed into the office.

His face was pale.

"Arthur."

"What?"

Thomas held a tablet.

"We found the source of the leak."

Arthur took it.

Read.

Then froze.

Amelia watched.

"What is it?"

Arthur slowly handed her the tablet.

The name appeared.

The person who released the evidence.

The person who started the investigation.

The person who wanted Blackwood to collapse.

Amelia stared at the screen.

Because the name belonged to someone she thought was on her side.

Someone who had protected her family for decades.

Someone who had stood beside her father through every crisis.

May you like

Thomas Reed.
