Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Mask

Amelia arrived twenty minutes early.
That was something her father had taught her.
Never arrive on time.
Arrive before time.
People revealed more when they believed they were waiting for someone else.
The meeting location was an abandoned theater on the west side of Chicago.
A place that had been closed for nearly a decade.
Dust covered the old velvet seats.
The stage curtains hung like tired ghosts.
No cameras.
No security.
No witnesses.
Exactly the kind of place someone chose when they wanted secrets to survive.
Amelia stood in the center aisle.
Waiting.
She hated that she had come alone.
She hated even more that she trusted herself enough to do it.
A sound echoed from behind the stage.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Then Vanessa Reed appeared.
No designer dress.
No expensive jewelry.
No perfect smile.
Just a woman wearing a simple black coat.
For the first time, Amelia saw something different.
Not the woman who stole attention at charity events.
Not the woman who laughed beside Nathan.
A woman carrying fear.
"You came."
Amelia didn't move.
"You knew I would."
Vanessa looked around the theater.
"You were always predictable in one way."
"And what way is that?"
"You always search for the truth."
Amelia's expression remained cold.
"Start talking."
Vanessa smiled slightly.
"Still the same."
"Same as what?"
"The girl who left the Blackwood mansion believing she could solve everything by herself."
The words immediately changed the atmosphere.
Amelia's eyes narrowed.
"How do you know about that?"
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Because I knew your family before you knew mine."
Silence.
The theater suddenly felt much smaller.
"Explain."
Vanessa looked toward the empty stage.
"My father worked for Arthur Blackwood."
Amelia's heart skipped.
"Doing what?"
"Cleaning problems."
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
Everyone powerful had someone like that.
Someone who erased mistakes.
Someone who made inconvenient things disappear.
"What kind of problems?"
Vanessa looked at her.
"The kind that never reached newspapers."
Amelia remembered something her father once said.
When she was fourteen.
They were sitting in his office while he reviewed a merger agreement.
She had asked him why wealthy people always seemed afraid.
Arthur had answered:
"Because money creates enemies faster than it creates friends."
At the time, she thought it was a lesson about business.
Now she wondered if it was a confession.
"Why are you telling me this?"
Vanessa laughed quietly.
"Because Nathan is not the only person who lied to you."
Amelia's jaw tightened.
"Careful."
"About what?"
"About my father."
Vanessa studied her.
"There it is."
"What?"
"The loyalty."
Amelia said nothing.
"You spent seven years testing strangers."
Vanessa continued.
"But you never tested the person who taught you to distrust everyone else."
The sentence landed.
Hard.
Amelia hated that part of her believed it.
"What does Nathan have to do with my father?"
Vanessa reached into her coat.
She removed a small envelope.
Not unlike the one Amelia received at the airport.
Inside was a document.
Amelia unfolded it.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
A signature.
A familiar signature.
Arthur Blackwood.
Her father.
"What is this?"
Vanessa's voice became quieter.
"A payment authorization."
"For what?"
"To Nathan Cole."
Amelia stared.
Impossible.
The date was eight years earlier.
Before she met Nathan.
Before their relationship.
Before their marriage.
"That's impossible."
"Is it?"
Amelia looked up.
"Why would my father pay Nathan?"
Vanessa didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she asked:
"Did Nathan ever tell you how he got his first major opportunity?"
Amelia remembered.
A small investment.
A lucky connection.
A businessman who believed in his talent.
"Nathan said he impressed a group of investors."
Vanessa nodded.
"That's what he believes."
"What does that mean?"
"It means Nathan Cole's entire career..."
She paused.
"...was built on a foundation your father created."
Amelia felt the pieces moving.
Not fitting.
Moving.
Like someone had arranged them differently.
Her entire marriage.
Her husband's success.
His opportunities.
Everything.
"You expect me to believe my father created Nathan?"
"No."
Vanessa looked at her.
"I expect you to ask him."
At the same time...
Arthur Blackwood sat in his private office.
The room was silent except for the sound of rain against the windows.
A man stood across from him.
Thomas.
"You told her nothing?"
Arthur didn't look up.
"Nothing."
"She has started investigating."
"I know."
"Then she will discover it herself."
Arthur finally raised his eyes.
"That is the point."
Thomas frowned.
"You really intend to let her hate you?"
Arthur looked toward the city.
"Better she hates me than dies because she trusts the wrong person."
A pause.
"How much does Vanessa know?"
"Enough."
Arthur's expression changed slightly.
"Then we are running out of time."
Back at the theater, Amelia looked at Vanessa.
"Why should I trust you?"
"You shouldn't."
The answer surprised her.
Vanessa continued.
"Trust is expensive. People like us don't give it away."
"Then what do you want?"
Vanessa walked closer.
"I want Nathan destroyed."
"Why?"
For the first time...
Anger appeared on Vanessa's face.
"Because he didn't just betray you."
A pause.
"He betrayed me too."
Amelia stared.
"You were his mistress."
Vanessa looked away.
"Yes."
"And?"
"And I was also his partner."
The revelation changed everything.
"What?"
Vanessa took a deep breath.
"Nathan and I were supposed to expose Daniel Voss."
"Expose?"
"Yes."
"Then why were you with him?"
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
"Because sometimes the easiest way to catch a monster..."
"...is to stand close enough to see how he feeds."
Before Amelia could respond, every light inside the theater suddenly shut off.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A sound came from above.
A projector.
An old screen flickered to life.
A video began playing.
Amelia froze.
Because the person on the screen...
Was herself.
Seven years ago.
The day she left home.
But she wasn't alone.
Standing beside her...
Was Nathan Cole.
And he was talking to someone Amelia had never seen before.
The audio was unclear.
Then one sentence echoed through the empty theater.
A sentence that made Amelia's blood run cold.
"Once she marries me, Blackwood will never know what happened."
The video stopped.
Silence.
Vanessa whispered:
"Now you understand."
Amelia stared at the frozen image.
At Nathan's younger face.
At the man she once loved.
The man who had been watching her long before she ever noticed him.
And suddenly...
The question was no longer:
Why did Nathan betray her?
The real question was:
May you like
Did Nathan ever love her at all?
