Chapter 11: The Brother Who Never Left

The elevator doors opened.

Ethan Blackwood stood inside the lobby as if he belonged there.

Because technically...

He did.

His name was carved into the history of the company.

His blood ran through the foundation of the empire.

He wasn't an outsider breaking in.

He was family.

And somehow...

That made him more dangerous.

Beside him stood Daniel Voss.

The man who had spent years moving pieces across the board without ever stepping into the light.

The man who had turned Nathan Cole into a weapon.

The man who had waited decades for this moment.

Amelia stared at the security screen.

Her brother looked directly into the camera.

Almost as if he knew she was watching.

Then he smiled.

"No."

The word came from Arthur.

Not anger.

Not disbelief.

Something worse.

Pain.

Amelia looked at him.

"You knew."

Arthur didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

"You knew Ethan was involved."

"I suspected."

"Since when?"

Arthur walked toward the desk.

"Before your wedding."

Her expression hardened.

"Of course."

The bitterness in her voice cut deeper than any accusation.

"Everyone knew."

She looked around the room.

"Everyone except me."

Arthur closed his eyes.

"Amelia."

"No."

She stepped away.

"Don't explain."

Because she was tired.

Tired of explanations arriving after the damage was done.

Ethan and Daniel entered the private elevator.

The camera followed them.

Thomas watched silently.

"They are coming here."

Arthur nodded.

"I know."

"Should we call security?"

"No."

Amelia looked at him.

"Why?"

Arthur stared at the screen.

"Because Ethan wants a confrontation."

A pause.

"And because he believes he already won."

The elevator reached the top floor.

The doors opened.

Ethan walked out first.

He wore no expensive suit.

No businessman disguise.

Just a black shirt and a calm expression.

Daniel followed.

For the first time, Amelia saw them standing together.

Not as enemies.

As partners.

That hurt more than she expected.

Because Ethan was the one person she never thought she needed to question.

When she was twelve, he taught her how to ride a bicycle.

When she was sixteen, he helped her sneak out to concerts.

When she decided to leave the family, he was the only one who didn't try to stop her.

"You should have told me," Amelia whispered.

Ethan looked at her.

"About what?"

"Everything."

His expression softened.

Only slightly.

"I wanted to."

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because you would have chosen him."

She frowned.

"Who?"

"Father."

Silence.

Ethan looked at Arthur.

"You always choose him."

Arthur's face remained unreadable.

But Amelia noticed something.

He didn't argue.

Not immediately.

That scared her.

"Ethan."

Her brother looked at her.

"Tell me the truth."

He smiled sadly.

"You always were the brave one."

"Don't do that."

"Do what?"

"Talk like you're protecting me."

Ethan looked down.

"I'm not."

The honesty surprised her.

"I'm finally telling you the truth."

Ethan walked toward the conference table.

Daniel remained behind him.

Supporting.

Waiting.

"You want to know why Nathan entered your life?"

Amelia said nothing.

"Because I found him."

Arthur's expression changed.

"You."

Ethan nodded.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

Amelia felt something break.

Not because Nathan was involved.

She already knew.

Because Ethan was.

"I found Nathan when he was desperate."

Ethan continued.

"He had talent. Intelligence. Ambition."

"And you used him."

Ethan looked at her.

"Yes."

No excuses.

No denial.

"You were supposed to marry him?"

Amelia's voice became colder.

Ethan hesitated.

"No."

"Then what?"

"I wanted him close."

"Why?"

Ethan looked at Arthur.

"Because I wanted to know how far Father was willing to go."

The answer confused her.

"What does that mean?"

Ethan laughed quietly.

"You still don't see it."

He looked around the office.

"This empire."

He pointed outside.

"The buildings. The money. The influence."

A pause.

"Everyone thinks Daniel wanted it."

He looked at Arthur.

"But Daniel only wanted revenge."

Then back to Amelia.

"I wanted the truth."

Arthur finally spoke.

"You don't know what you're doing."

Ethan's expression hardened.

"That's what you always say when someone stops obeying you."

"I built this family."

"No."

Ethan stepped closer.

"You built a machine."

His voice rose.

"And then you were surprised when your children became parts of it."

The words hit.

Even Arthur couldn't dismiss them.

Amelia watched her father.

For the first time, she saw the damage behind the power.

A man who built walls around everyone he loved.

Then wondered why nobody could breathe.

Daniel finally spoke.

"Enough."

Everyone turned.

Daniel walked forward.

"This conversation is emotional."

He smiled.

"But emotions are why people lose."

Amelia looked at him.

"You planned all of this."

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

His eyes moved toward Arthur.

"Because your father destroyed my life."

Arthur laughed coldly.

"No."

Daniel's expression changed.

"You still believe that?"

"I know it."

Silence.

Arthur looked at Amelia.

"Because Daniel is lying about the past."

Everyone stopped.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

A small crack.

But Amelia saw it.

"What lie?"

Arthur looked directly at Daniel.

"Tell her."

Daniel said nothing.

"Tell her why you really left her mother."

The room froze.

Amelia looked between them.

"What?"

Arthur continued.

"Tell her what happened the night before your mother died."

Daniel's face changed.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

Amelia's phone suddenly vibrated.

Another message.

Another unknown sender.

But this time...

The message was not from an enemy.

It was from her mother.

Impossible.

A scheduled message.

Sent ten years ago.

The screen displayed one sentence:

Amelia, if Daniel ever returns, do not trust his story.

Her breath stopped.

Then another line appeared.

Because he was not the person who betrayed our family.

A third line followed.

It was someone much closer.

Amelia looked up slowly.

At her father.

At her brother.

At Daniel.

Three people.

Three versions of the truth.

And one of them had destroyed everything.

Then the office lights went out.

A gunshot echoed from the hallway.

Everyone froze.

When emergency lights turned on...

Daniel Voss was gone.

And on the floor beside the elevator...

Was a single folder.

May you like

With Amelia's name written across it.
