Chapter 3: The Blackwood Shadow

Nathan Cole had faced angry investors.

He had survived hostile negotiations.

He had walked into rooms where everyone wanted him to fail and walked out with signatures on contracts.

Fear was something he understood.

But this was different.

Because for the first time, Nathan wasn't facing an opponent.

He was facing a consequence.

The attorneys waiting downstairs did not raise their voices.

They did not threaten him.

They did not need to.

People like them never entered a room to argue.

They entered to end things.

Nathan stepped out of the elevator and saw three people standing near the reception desk.

A woman in a dark navy suit held a leather folder.

Beside her stood two men.

Silent.

Watching.

The woman extended her hand.

"Mr. Nathan Cole?"

Nathan forced a smile.

"Yes."

"My name is Evelyn Hart. I represent Blackwood Capital Holdings."

The name struck harder than he expected.

Blackwood.

The company that rarely appeared in newspapers but somehow influenced every major business decision in the region.

"What does Blackwood want with me?"

Evelyn looked at him calmly.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"Whether you prefer to explain what happened yourself..."

She opened the folder.

"...or whether you prefer us to explain it for you."

Nathan's smile disappeared.

Across town, Amelia sat in a quiet restaurant.

The kind of place where wealthy people conducted important conversations without anyone realizing they were important.

She sat alone.

A cup of untouched tea rested in front of her.

At exactly 7:00 p.m., Nathan arrived.

He wore the same expensive suit that had impressed investors.

The same watch.

The same confident expression.

But Amelia noticed something different.

His eyes.

They were searching.

Calculating.

He wasn't here to apologize.

He was here to measure damage.

Nathan sat across from her.

"Where were you last night?"

Amelia looked at him.

No greeting.

No concern.

Not even a question about whether she was okay.

Interesting.

"I needed space."

"From me?"

"From the truth."

His fingers tightened slightly.

"What does that mean?"

Amelia stirred her tea.

"It means I finally stopped making excuses for you."

Nathan leaned back.

"You saw something."

Not a question.

A confirmation.

Amelia studied him.

For years she had wondered when Nathan would stop pretending.

Apparently...

Now.

"Who is Vanessa Reed?"

His expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Amelia saw it.

A tiny crack.

"She's a colleague."

"Interesting."

"What?"

"Most people say friend first."

Nathan became defensive.

"Are you accusing me?"

"No."

"Then what are we doing here?"

Amelia looked out the window.

The city lights reflected across the glass.

"We're finding out if anything between us was real."

Nathan laughed quietly.

"You think you can judge me?"

"No."

She looked back at him.

"I think you already judged yourself."

Nathan leaned forward.

"You have no idea what you're talking about."

That sentence.

Those exact words.

Amelia remembered them.

He had said them hundreds of times.

Whenever she questioned expenses.

Whenever she asked about late nights.

Whenever she noticed something he wanted hidden.

You have no idea.

A phrase designed to make someone doubt themselves.

But Nathan had forgotten one thing.

Amelia was never ignorant.

She was patient.

There was a difference.

"I found the accounts."

Nathan froze.

"What accounts?"

"The ones connected to Daniel Voss."

Silence.

Real silence.

For the first time, Nathan had no prepared response.

Amelia watched him carefully.

There it was.

Confirmation.

"You know that name."

Nathan looked away.

"Who told you?"

The question answered everything.

Amelia's heart sank.

Not because she was surprised.

Because a small part of her had still hoped she was wrong.

"You didn't even deny it."

Nathan stood suddenly.

"You don't understand what you're involved in."

"No."

Amelia remained seated.

"I understand exactly."

"You think this is some marriage problem?"

His voice lowered.

"You have no idea how dangerous this is."

There it was.

Not anger.

Fear.

Amelia looked at him.

"Are you warning me?"

"I'm trying to protect you."

She almost laughed.

Protect.

Another word people used when they wanted control.

"From what?"

Nathan hesitated.

Then he said something she never expected.

"From my partners."

That night, Amelia returned to the Blackwood Foundation.

Thomas was waiting.

"You spoke with him."

"Yes."

"And?"

"He is afraid."

Thomas nodded.

"Good."

"No."

Amelia placed the photograph on the table.

"He isn't afraid of losing me."

Thomas looked at her.

"Then what is he afraid of?"

Amelia turned the photograph around.

The picture showed Nathan, Vanessa, and Daniel Voss.

"He is afraid someone else will discover what they did."

Thomas studied her expression.

"You think Nathan isn't the mastermind."

"I think he's hiding something."

She opened another file.

"Someone is above him."

Thomas became serious.

"That changes everything."

Before Amelia could answer, the office lights suddenly went dark.

Every screen in the room shut down.

Thomas immediately reached for his phone.

"No signal."

A second later, the main door clicked.

Locked.

Amelia stood.

"Thomas?"

A voice came through the security system.

Calm.

Female.

Familiar.

"Amelia."

Her blood turned cold.

Because she recognized that voice.

Vanessa Reed.

"You spent years pretending to be invisible."

A pause.

Then:

"Unfortunately for you..."

"...someone finally noticed."

The lights returned.

But the room was different.

The folders on the table were gone.

All except one.

A black envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

Not of Nathan.

Not of Vanessa.

Not of Daniel.

It was a photograph of Amelia.

Taken seven years earlier.

The day she left her father's house.

On the back, written in red ink:

May you like

We know who you are.
