Chapter 4: The Enemy Who Knew Her Name

Amelia stared at the photograph for almost a full minute.

Not because she didn't understand what she was seeing.

Because she understood it too well.

The picture was seven years old.

Taken outside the Blackwood estate.

The day she left.

The day she placed her old life into a suitcase and walked away from everything her family had built.

She remembered the weather.

Cold.

Gray.

Almost identical to tonight.

She remembered her father's face behind the mansion window.

He hadn't chased after her.

Hadn't begged.

Hadn't ordered her to stay.

That was the hardest part.

Arthur Blackwood loved like a fortress.

He didn't lock people inside.

He simply built walls strong enough that they could always return.

And now...

Someone had found the door.

"Thomas."

Her voice was quieter than usual.

"Find out who accessed this building."

Thomas was already moving.

"I'll handle security."

"No."

She looked at the envelope.

"I want everything."

Thomas stopped.

"Everything?"

"Every camera recording. Every visitor log. Every employee file."

Her eyes hardened.

"And I want to know how Vanessa Reed got inside a building she should never have known existed."

Thomas nodded.

But before he left, he hesitated.

"Amelia."

She looked up.

"There is something you should know."

"What?"

"The person who sent this message..."

Thomas glanced at the photograph.

"...wanted you to find it."

She frowned.

"Meaning?"

"If they wanted to hurt you, they wouldn't have left evidence."

A cold feeling moved through her.

"They wanted my attention."

"Exactly."

Across the city, Nathan Cole sat alone in his office.

The lights were off.

The city skyline reflected against the glass walls.

A view he had once considered proof of success.

Tonight, it looked like a cage.

The meeting with Blackwood's attorneys had lasted twelve minutes.

Twelve minutes that destroyed everything he thought he controlled.

They didn't accuse him.

They didn't threaten him.

They simply asked questions.

Questions only someone with access to impossible information could ask.

"Explain the Voss transactions."

"Why was company money transferred through three separate shell companies?"

"Who authorized the private acquisition?"

"Why does your signature appear on documents you claim never existed?"

Nathan had answered almost nothing.

Because every answer created another problem.

Then Evelyn Hart had said something before leaving.

Something he couldn't forget.

"Mr. Cole, there is one person who has been protecting you longer than you realize."

Nathan had stared at her.

"Who?"

Evelyn simply replied:

"Your wife."

Nathan hated that sentence.

Because it created a question he didn't want to ask.

Why?

Why would Amelia protect him?

She had always seemed too quiet.

Too forgiving.

Too willing to stand behind him.

He had mistaken that for weakness.

But what if it wasn't?

What if...

He had never understood her at all?

At midnight, Nathan arrived at the apartment.

The place felt colder.

Amelia's books were still arranged neatly.

Her plants were still by the window.

Her coffee cup was still in the cabinet.

Small traces of her remained everywhere.

But something was different.

A missing feeling.

Like the apartment belonged to someone who had already left.

Nathan poured himself a drink.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

"Hello?"

A man's voice responded.

"You made a mistake."

Nathan froze.

"Who is this?"

"You thought you married a nobody."

The voice laughed softly.

"That was your first mistake."

Nathan stood.

"What do you want?"

"You should be asking what Amelia wants."

His grip tightened.

"What does that mean?"

"She is awake now."

The call ended.

Nathan stared at the phone.

Then the message arrived.

One image.

A security photo.

Amelia entering the Blackwood Foundation.

Nathan's face turned pale.

Blackwood Foundation.

He had heard the name before.

Everyone in business had.

But no one knew who truly controlled it.

No one except...

A memory surfaced.

Years earlier.

Before their wedding.

He had asked Amelia about her family.

She had smiled.

"My father believes money changes people."

Nathan had laughed.

"Does he have money?"

She had looked away.

"Enough."

At the time, he thought she was joking.

Now...

He wasn't sure.

The next morning, Nathan made the decision that would change everything.

He drove to a private address.

An old mansion outside the city.

The home of Eleanor Cole.

His mother.

The woman who had always encouraged his ambition.

The woman who had always said Amelia was holding him back.

She opened the door before he knocked.

"You look terrible."

Nathan walked inside.

"I need answers."

Eleanor poured tea.

"About what?"

"Amelia."

The cup stopped halfway.

For a brief second...

Eleanor looked afraid.

Nathan noticed.

His mother.

Afraid.

"Why did you react like that?"

"I didn't."

"You did."

Silence.

Then Eleanor sat down.

"How much do you know?"

Nathan stared.

"Know about what?"

Eleanor looked toward the window.

"About who your wife really is."

The room went completely still.

Nathan felt something collapse inside him.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"All these years?"

Eleanor sighed.

"Amelia was never ordinary."

Nathan laughed bitterly.

"She let me believe she was."

"No."

Eleanor looked directly at him.

"She let you believe whatever version of her made you comfortable."

The words hit harder than expected.

Nathan looked away.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I wanted to see what kind of man you were."

Another pause.

"And now I know."

Nathan felt anger rising.

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Eleanor's expression became cold.

"It means you failed the test."

That evening, Amelia received a package.

No sender.

No address.

Inside was an old newspaper article.

The headline was faded.

But still readable.

BLACKWOOD HEIRESS DISAPPEARS FROM PUBLIC LIFE AFTER SECRET MARRIAGE.

Her hands went still.

She turned the page.

A handwritten note was attached.

Four words.

Your father lied too.

For the first time in years...

Amelia felt something she rarely allowed herself to feel.

Doubt.

Because the person attacking her knew her secrets.

Knew her family.

Knew her past.

And now they were suggesting the one person she trusted most...

Arthur Blackwood...

had hidden something from her.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

"Amelia."

She recognized it instantly.

Vanessa.

"Come alone."

"Why?"

A pause.

Then Vanessa said:

"Because the man you think you're fighting..."

"...is not the man you should fear."

The call ended.

Amelia looked at the newspaper.

At the photograph.

At the message.

And for the first time since returning to the Blackwood name...

May you like

She wondered if she had chosen the wrong enemy.
