Chapter 9: The Woman Who Claimed My Son

The photograph stayed on my kitchen table for three days.

I kept telling myself I would put it away.

I kept telling myself I needed to focus on my children.

But every time I walked past it, I felt the same cold feeling.

A stranger was connected to my son.

A stranger who believed she had a right to him.

A stranger who had been waiting before Ethan was even born.

I had already survived one nightmare.

I had already discovered that the man I loved could hide the truth from me.

I had already learned that money and power could make people believe they were above consequences.

But now there was someone else.

Someone I knew nothing about.

And that scared me more than Richard.

Because Richard had wanted control.

Victoria wanted something else.

She wanted my child.

On the fourth morning, Michael came to my house.

He no longer entered without permission.

That was one of the first things he changed after everything happened.

Before, this house had been his.

Now he understood it was mine.

And our sons'.

He knocked.

I opened the door.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked past me.

At the twins playing on the floor.

His expression softened.

No matter what had happened, he loved them.

That part was real.

“Can I come in?”

I stepped aside.

He entered quietly.

Ethan immediately looked up.

“Daddy.”

The word stopped Michael.

Every time Ethan called him that, I saw the pain in his eyes.

Because he knew he almost lost the right to hear it.

He walked over and picked him up.

“I missed you.”

Ethan smiled.

Michael closed his eyes for a second.

Like he was memorizing the moment.

I watched silently.

Then I said:

“We need to talk.”

His expression changed.

“What happened?”

I placed the photograph on the table.

The second Michael saw it…

His face lost all color.

“You know her.”

It wasn’t a question.

Michael slowly sat down.

“Where did you get this?”

“Answer me.”

He looked at the photo.

Then at me.

“Her name is Victoria Hale.”

“I know.”

His eyes narrowed.

“How?”

“Dr. Peterson.”

Silence.

Michael looked away.

“How much do you know?”

“Enough to know she was part of the plan.”

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt.

Even after everything, I still hoped there was one thing he would say was impossible.

But he didn’t.

“Tell me.”

Michael took a deep breath.

“Victoria was my father’s business partner.”

“Business partner?”

“Yes.”

“What does that have to do with my son?”

Michael looked toward the twins.

Then he spoke quietly.

“Years ago, before I met you, my father made a deal.”

“A deal?”

“With Victoria’s family.”

I frowned.

“What kind of deal involves a child?”

Michael looked ashamed.

“A promise.”

My stomach turned.

“What promise?”

He hesitated.

Then:

“That if the Carter family ever had a male heir, Victoria’s family would have influence over his future.”

I stared at him.

“That’s insane.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew?”

Michael looked down.

“Yes.”

My anger returned.

“You knew about her?”

“I knew my father had connections with her family.”

“Did you know she wanted our son?”

“No.”

His answer came quickly.

“I didn’t know until after the delivery.”

“Then when did you find out?”

Michael was silent.

Too long.

“Michael.”

He closed his eyes.

“After I moved Ethan.”

My chest tightened.

“You talked to her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because my father told me she was the safest person to hide him with.”

I felt sick.

“You trusted her?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because I was desperate.”

His voice cracked.

“I thought I was buying time.”

I looked at him.

“You kept moving my son between people like he was a secret package.”

Michael flinched.

“You’re right.”

That answer surprised me.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just acceptance.

But it didn’t erase the pain.

“So what happened?”

Michael rubbed his face.

“Victoria found out the truth.”

“What truth?”

“That Ethan wasn’t what my father thought.”

I remembered the genetic records.

“The test results.”

He nodded.

“Richard believed one of our sons carried a rare Carter marker.”

“And he didn’t?”

“No.”

“Then why does Victoria still want him?”

Michael looked at me.

“Because she knows something Richard doesn’t.”

A chill went through me.

“What?”

Michael reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this after the trial.”

I didn’t touch it.

“What is it?”

“A letter.”

“From who?”

“Victoria.”

My heart started beating faster.

“Why do you have it?”

“Because she sent it to my father.”

I opened the envelope.

The handwriting was elegant.

The message was short.

But every word felt dangerous.

Richard, you misunderstand the value of the child. The bloodline is not what matters. The child himself is the key. If you fail, I will take control myself.

I looked up.

“The key?”

Michael nodded.

“That’s what scared me.”

“What does it mean?”

“I don’t know.”

I looked back at the letter.

“What else?”

Michael hesitated.

“There was another page.”

“Where is it?”

“I destroyed it.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You destroyed evidence?”

“No.”

His voice became serious.

“I destroyed it because it had your name on it.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Michael looked at me.

“Victoria wasn’t only interested in Ethan.”

I waited.

“She was interested in you.”

The room became silent.

“Why?”

Michael shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“Michael.”

“I swear.”

He looked desperate.

“I don’t know.”

I stood up.

“I’m done living in the dark.”

Michael nodded.

“I know.”

“No more secrets.”

“I agree.”

“No more protecting me by lying.”

His eyes filled with regret.

“I understand.”

I looked at him.

“Then help me.”

A moment passed.

Then he nodded.

“I will.”

That night, after Michael left, I sat beside my sons’ cribs.

Both boys were sleeping.

Peaceful.

Unaware.

I touched Ethan’s tiny hand.

The same hand that had disappeared from me.

The same hand I thought I would never hold.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

Calm.

Confident.

“You finally found out.”

My entire body froze.

“Who is this?”

A soft laugh.

“Someone who has been waiting for your family for a very long time.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Victoria?”

“Yes.”

My heart raced.

“What do you want?”

Another pause.

Then she said:

“I want what was promised to me.”

I looked at my sleeping son.

“No.”

Her voice remained calm.

“You don’t understand, Laura.”

“Understand what?”

“The child you are protecting…”

A pause.

“…was never supposed to belong to you.”

My blood ran cold.

“He is my son.”

Victoria’s voice became colder.

“You think giving birth makes you the only person who matters?”

I stood up.

“You don’t know anything about me.”

“No.”

She whispered.

“But I know everything about your husband.”

The line went silent.

Then she said the words that changed everything:

“Ask Michael why he never told you how we met.”

The call ended.

I stood frozen in the darkness.

Because for the first time…

I wondered if there was another secret.

Not from Richard.

May you like

Not from Victoria.

From Michael.
