Chapter 10: The Secret Michael Hid Before We Met

I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because my sons cried.
Not because I was exhausted.
But because one sentence kept repeating in my mind.
Ask Michael why he never told you how we met.
I had spent months discovering secrets.
First, my son wasn’t dead.
Then, my husband had lied.
Then, his father had tried to control my child.
Then, another woman appeared claiming she had a right to my family.
And now…
Now I was questioning the beginning of my entire relationship.
The foundation.
The first moment everything started.
How could someone I loved for years still have parts of his life hidden from me?
The next morning, Michael arrived early.
He brought breakfast for the twins.
A small gesture.
A normal gesture.
But nothing felt normal anymore.
The moment he stepped inside, I knew.
He could see it on my face.
“What happened?”
I didn’t answer immediately.
I waited until he placed the food on the table.
Until he looked comfortable.
Then I said:
“Victoria called me last night.”
Michael froze.
The plate in his hand stopped halfway to the table.
“What did she say?”
Not:
“Who is Victoria?”
Not:
“Are you okay?”
He already knew.
I watched his reaction carefully.
“She said I should ask you how we met.”
The silence was immediate.
Michael looked away.
That was all I needed.
I didn’t need an explanation yet.
His reaction was already an answer.
“You know what she means.”
Michael sat down slowly.
“Laura…”
“No.”
My voice was calm.
“I need the truth.”
He rubbed his hands together.
A habit I had seen thousands of times.
Usually when he was nervous.
“I should have told you.”
The words hurt.
Because they confirmed it.
“There’s something.”
“Yes.”
“What?”
He looked at our sons.
Then back at me.
“Before I met you, I worked for my father.”
I frowned.
“I knew that.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You knew I worked at Carter Holdings.”
I nodded.
“But you didn’t know what I did.”
I waited.
“I wasn’t just an employee.”
My stomach tightened.
“What were you?”
Michael looked down.
“I handled certain family matters.”
The phrase sounded strange.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I solved problems for my father.”
“What kind of problems?”
He didn’t answer.
“Michael.”
His voice became quiet.
“Problems involving people.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What people?”
“People who threatened his reputation.”
I stared at him.
“You’re saying you were involved in covering things up?”
“Yes.”
The honesty shocked me.
“How long?”
“Years.”
I stepped back.
“Then who were you when I met you?”
Michael looked at me.
“A man trying to escape.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
My voice trembled.
“You were a man pretending.”
He accepted that.
“I was.”
I looked away.
All those memories.
Our first date.
Our wedding.
The day he told me he loved me.
Were they real?
Or was I just another person he had carefully placed into his life?
“How did we meet?”
Michael took a deep breath.
“I first saw you because of my father.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
He closed his eyes.
“This is the part I was most afraid to tell you.”
“Why?”
“Because I didn’t know if you would believe that my feelings became real.”
The room became silent.
“Explain.”
Michael looked at me.
“Three years ago, my father was investigating a company that refused to sell land to him.”
I frowned.
“What does that have to do with me?”
“You worked there.”
I froze.
“I saw you during that investigation.”
The world felt strange.
“You were watching me?”
“At first.”
My heart sank.
Michael continued quickly.
“But not for the reasons you think.”
“What reason then?”
“You were the only person in that company who stood up to my father.”
I remembered.
A meeting years ago.
A powerful businessman demanding something unreasonable.
Everyone stayed silent.
Except me.
I had argued.
I had refused.
I never knew Michael was there.
“He became interested in you,” Michael said.
“Your father?”
“Yes.”
My stomach turned.
“He wanted information about you.”
“And you got it?”
Michael looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“You investigated me?”
“Yes.”
“Before we dated?”
“Yes.”
The silence afterward was painful.
I walked to the window.
My hands were shaking.
“So our relationship started with you spying on me.”
Michael stood.
“Laura.”
“No.”
I turned around.
“You don’t get to fix this with an apology.”
He stopped.
“I need to understand.”
“I know.”
“Did you approach me because your father wanted you to?”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
“I approached you because I wanted to know you.”
“But you already knew things about me.”
“Yes.”
“That’s not the same.”
Michael lowered his head.
“I know.”
I looked at him.
“What was Victoria’s role?”
His expression changed.
“She was involved in that investigation.”
I froze.
“She knew you?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“She worked with my father.”
“So she knew about me before we met?”
“Yes.”
The pieces connected.
Victoria didn’t suddenly appear.
She had been near my life from the beginning.
Watching.
Waiting.
“Why did she care about me?”
Michael hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s not true.”
He stayed silent.
“Michael.”
Finally, he said:
“She thought you were important.”
“Why?”
“Because of your family.”
I frowned.
“My family?”
“Yes.”
I felt confused.
“My family is ordinary.”
“That’s what you think.”
My heart skipped.
“What are you talking about?”
Michael walked to the table.
He picked up his phone.
“I found something after the trial.”
He showed me a document.
I read the first line.
And my entire body froze.
Genetic Compatibility Report.
I looked at him.
“What is this?”
“A report about your family history.”
“My family?”
Michael nodded.
“Laura, there’s something about your background you don’t know.”
I stared at the paper.
“What?”
He took a deep breath.
“Your mother changed your family name when you were young.”
I frowned.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Michael looked at me.
“Because she was hiding you.”
A cold feeling spread through my body.
“From who?”
He looked at the document.
Then at me.
“From people like my father.”
I couldn’t speak.
The entire story shifted again.
This was no longer only about my sons.
It was about me.
My past.
My family.
A history I never knew existed.
Then my phone rang.
Another unknown number.
I looked at Michael.
He looked afraid.
I answered.
A woman’s voice appeared.
But this time…
It wasn’t Victoria.
It was someone older.
Someone who sounded tired.
“Laura?”
My blood went cold.
“How do you know my name?”
A pause.
Then:
“Because I’m the woman who helped your mother hide you.”
I couldn’t move.
“Who are you?”
Her voice trembled.
“My name is Eleanor.”
I waited.
Then she said:
“Laura, you need to know the truth before Victoria reaches you.”
My heart raced.
“What truth?”
The woman whispered:
“Your mother didn’t hide you because you were in danger.”
A pause.
“She hid you because your existence could destroy the Carter family.”
The call ended.
I stood there in silence.
Looking at Michael.
Looking at my sons.
Realizing something terrifying.
The story of my family had started long before I met Michael.

And somehow…
I was the missing piece everyone had been searching for.
